The memory of these, and the power and excitement he got from the orchestra will something I will remember forever. Also I met him a number of times in the Green room after the performance.... he was in a highly emotional state then I recall, with only broken English being spoken.... Heavens how I loved him and his performances. He has a place in my heart.

Many people that are not musicians do not realize that an ORCHESTRA is simply a huge instrument (like an organ) and the Conductor is the artist...the player if you will. This is why Conductors are known to be testy...it is like having a key out of tune is one of the members of the instrument isn't playing it the way the conductor wants it. You can't have independence in the instrument.

Karajan's Wagner is alright but nothing special. Give me this over his interpretation any day, and they can put the singers in trash bags for all I care.

I grew up listening to Wagner conducted by Karajan, and I loved it... until I heard this amazing concert! I am now a fan of Klaus Tennstedt and the London Philarmonic.

Open Champagne and play this on my 30th birthday. I was telling my friend that Tennstedt and the LPO are celebrating my birthday at 6:45.
I love Tennstedt and his Wagner. His Mahler 1st is also the best.

I've never heard this overture this way before; that I had no idea how so many conductors leave so much out, since when I saw that it would be more that 24 minutes…well all I could think is that the Tennstedt version would be a much slower tempo, only to discover that Wagner had composed so much more, but that so many of our more illustrious conductors chose to edit out so much…Thank you for posting the ACTUAL overture…and many thanks to the late, lamented Maestro Tennstedt for this…Thank You!!….

This is the Paris version. Wagner significantly changed the opera in an attempt to make it palatable to the French opera-goers. He failed, partly because of some very rude members of Parisian society who saw to the opera's failure. In any case, you've probably been hearing the Dresden version of the overture, which is roughly 15 minutes long.

    • @geoffwhitemusic
      @geoffwhitemusic 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

So no one has actually been editing anything. There are two radically different versions of the overture, that's all.

@@geoffwhitemusic : That assessment seems to be correct--- there are two radically different versions of the overture, with the Paris version organically connected to the following Venusberg music, whereas the more commonly-programmed Dresden version (as an orchestral violinist and violist, i have had to labour through the Dresden version three or four times but have never been called upon to play the Paris version...) ends loudly and triumphantly without said Venusberg "stuff". The loud ending, which by comparison with Tennstedt's choice here is somewhat more brief, probably explains its much greater popularity....

What a superb performance and recording! The brass and woodwinds stand out magnificently with clear details, even in the climaxes. From the beginning, one can hear that the sound is rich and full bodied - a real credit to the balance engineers. On the picture side, I would prefer to have seen more close-ups of the orchestral groups, and not so much of Tennstedt, as splendid as he looks.

Rafael! Contra as Colônias Francesas. A Inglaterra e a França provocaram as duas.
