In the first 43 seconds you say that and i quote "as long as you are having fun, then it's not a waste of time". By this logic, my crippling alcoholism and abuse of substances is fun, therefore, based on the principles in your argument, it is not a waste of time, and you, and I say you, are encouraging me to drink one more beer. Thankyou Saow. Give me my keys.

This is how I feel with Sound Voltex at my local arcades-everyone just plays Konaste, but my setup sucks because I have a desk where there's a shelf directly above my monitors so I can't rotate them, and the specific shape of the desk means i can't just install monitor arms.

I felt you bro but in my case, I don't really mind much (or sometimes) about 1-2 or no one's playing. What I'm really mind is how often the drum's sensor broken thanks to the children and people who hit the drum aggressively

So, I'm a British maimai player who plays on Finale since April 2023. Over the past year and half, it's been a joy to see me improve from nothing to now regularly S-ing 12s and see a community build up from the machine though I've made a few closer friendships in that community. I remember back in May 2024 when one of those closer friends went on holiday to Asia for a month and over that month, the game didn't feel the same. It made me realise that while progress was a catalyst for me to play, the glue was really the friends that I made along the way.

6:36 it gets extremely real beyond this point... GOD, THIS ENTIRE SEQUENCE MADE ME ACTUALLY THINK OF MY PAST AGAIN WHYYYYY
I have been playing video games, way off as a kid, and I have played a lot of obscure games like, God of War and that one game where you just shoot at people, but never the popular ones like Pokemon or something... My devices did change as I grew up: it started with a PlayStation Portable when I was still a kid in Manila, then it turned to a tablet when we started our life in the province, and when I reached 6th grade, I got my first ever phone, which is a Sony phone, and as the quarantine started, I now got this Huawei phone I am typing this TH-cam comment on... I have played a lot of games, yes, but I never saw the point of playing them or something... Maybe it's just the learning process, the countless challenges and adventures, and making memories parts that make gaming exceptional, but oh boy... I am ADDICTED TO GAMING, wayyyyy before I even discovered the Rhythm game genre... I played at least one game IN EVERY MAIN GENRE. I swear, I spent more time gaming than anything else in my life...
This is one of the most educational videos I've ever watched today... I wish I could actually justify my entire journey in this digital world... Nice video! Nice shock value midway, too-

Thank you very much for this video. I really liked the bittersweet ending. I only discovered maimai a few months ago because I'm in China and people aren't very social here. In the end even with my little experience I tell myself the same thing: what's the point? I only grind and have no friends. but i'm having fun like I've never had so much fun on a game. So in the end i think that's the most important thing for me.

wow. this video spoke to me so much 😭 ive been playing maimai competitively since 2017, and i've hit some lows in my life recently that gave me a reality check of how addicted i was at the game. Along with the frustration of being stuck at my current skill level, I slowly lost interest.
I resonate so much with this video, especially since letting go of grinding tf out of the game was such a bittersweet feeling for me. Slowly came into terms w it though. I'm happy with how much I achieved, and I can still play casually and hang out w the friends I made, maybe help them get FDX plates and such.
Thank you for this video ❤, made me tear up a bit. The game is such a huge part of my life and I'll never forget the years I grinded it

Im happy that I have a friend group community at my local arcade. Its to the point id rather queue with them around than hogging a cab alone. Even though the wait time is 30~45 minutes, its fun hanging around them in a secluded rhyhtm game isle. We have chairs to sit around or if it gets too crowded, we just sit on the floor cheering our friends playing on the cabs. Some of us brings stuff like toys and fumos to show to each other and talk about other hobbies during wait time. Some of us (mostly me) even do assignments on our laptops or tablets. Or we doomscroll and share brainrot memes. Even though the actual queue time is long, but no one is on a rush to play. It feels like we have our own cabs for ourselves. Most of us isnt even highskilled player, so its pretty humbling. Even though theres some gap in skill level between us, we still supports and help everyone through their journey. Even though I got stuck and choke on scores that I want to achieve, it doesnt really matter when I am around my friends. The down side is that, other people get really intimidated to play lul.

As a dance game player and an aging millennial, I got back into DDR hard when I found out that there was a Round1 at the mall where I lived. I had past experience, but years of neglecting cardio and such made it painful at first to get back in.
I justified it by saying that, "I do nothing but lift weights. I need cardio to balance it out. It'll be fun and a casual adventure down memory lane and I'll lose some weight too. I always wanted to beat MAX 300."
Nope, none of that shit happened, though I could probably beat what used to be the hardest song which now a mid-tier song by year's end, at which point, I'm done. Since the only people who play regularly where I'm at are >16 PFCs and above, I started to get really into it so I wouldn't look like shit next to them. After six months and hundreds of dollars, I just cleared my first 15 and it was one of the really easy ones too. I also didn't lose a single pound and even gained weight since you need calories to stomp on a metal pad. I lost more weight this weekend being sick and eating junk food than I ever did playing the dumb dancing game. My upper body strength has completely stalled (my thighs have visible veins now, but that's probably the high blood pressure that's going to kill me in ten years doing that) and what started as a, "take it easy, enjoy your successes and failures" turned into, "Scream obscenities at Konami if I fail. Belittle myself for only missing one step or getting a AA because everyone else gets AAA on the same stuff. Wow, what a failure! You suck at the boomer metal dance pad game."
Also, recovering alcoholic here, so I just supplanted my desire to smash cans of Steel Reserve and verbally abusing my loved ones with smashing a metal pad and verbally abusing Konami, who genuinely deserves it, so it's definitely progress, not PFC's, for me.

I do go to the arcade more often in recent times but I have only grinded a few songs ao far (I'm around 10k) only when I feel like it. I've seen quite a few people grind out songs and I'm happy for them when they reached the desired goal. I know I'll grow out of this eventually but I think living the moment is also important.

I'm kinda glad that there aren't very many ""hardcore"" arcade rhythm gamers in my area, means that most of the time I don't need to be worried about queues to the rhythm game cabs and can play pretty much til I want to take a break and rest or play something else.
Even on days the arcade is full this applies to an extent due to most visitors not being rhythm gamers. They might try any of the rhythm games (especially maimai and Dancerush are the big draws for many people, particularly kids), but even then the cabs are generally available. And besides, I primarily play 3 rhythm games at the arcade, so I have options for when one is occupied. In fact, that arcade has like 9 different rhythm game titles, though only like 6 I actually play, so even on the off-chance all 3 of my main rhythm games would be occupied I still have options.
I love seeing kids be absolutely flabbergasted by my playing 🤣

I saw the thumbnail with "-$727" and you know exactly what I was thinking
    727!!! WYSI!! WYFSI!!
I can't fluffing take it. I see an image of a random score posted and then I see it, I fluffing see it. "Oh that looks kinda like the Blue Zenith 727 score" it started as. That's funny, that's a cool reference. But I kept going, I'd see a clock with time that showed 7:27, I'd see that I'm on the 7/27 page on my school homework, my last notice to pay my electricity bill is 727$ , I'd notice that it's been 727 days since the last time I touched a woman. And every time I'd burst into an insane, breath deprived laugh staring at the image as the number 727 ran through my head. I'm scared to look at the time when someone asks me what time is it. It's torment, psychological torture, I am being conditioned to laugh maniacally any time I see a 3-digit number which is anywhere close to 727. I can't fluffing live like this... I can't I can't I can't I can't I can't! And don't get me fluffing started on the words! I'll never hear the phrase "when you see it" again without thinking of 727. Someone does pretty cool and respectable score and I can't say anything other than "WYSI." I could watch a man FC hard underweighted map I love and all I would be able to say is "WYSI" and laugh like a fluffing insane person. And the phrase "when you see it" is ruined. I can't live anymore. 727 has destroyed my fluffing life. I want to eject myself from this plane of existence.

1:00 Nah, I'm sure it's cus modern gaming sucks. Not all of them, but that fact is rather apparent: micro transactions, trend-chasing, killing off creativity to meet social quotas...
As someone nearing his mid 20s, working 9-5 like your average person, I would still dump tons of hours into rhythm games and older, classic boomer games like CS or AoE. And if u prefer more solid evidence, Back 4 Blood - the game that was supposed to be a L4D2 successor - has around 3000+ active players at all times, while good ol' L4D2 itself stands at 20.000+.
What's more, if u go to a cyber cafe in Vietnam, you'll often see big groups of friends just playing 1v1s or 5v5s on CS 1.6's Dust2 or Italy. I wanna mention them cus they're the minority that plays these games but wouldn't realistically show up in any kind of data, similar to many rhythm gamers I've seen who prefer to play solo and enjoy their time without socialising.

I see tons of people what grow in a community that are very good at the game and pretty much if you aren't good you can't really talk to them, it's like a social gap? Idk. I play this game twice a week and tbh I'm not even sure if trying to get better at it would help me (cause I was super try hard at osu for a while and that didn't really feel the greatest)
If the hobby is such say 'a hobby' you should try to find the fun in it, as trying harder to get better at it just kills the fun, like education and stuff is the same as well.
To anyone who stumbles upon this I mean no hate or harm, just writing down how I feel and hope to make someone's day better

Queue times were why I never got into maimai, and why I have three mains-if one's busy I can just swap to another.
When you went over how you feel like you have to keep going, I started to think about how the makers of these arcade games like Konami make pachinko machines, and the way I always had this disdain for redemption games, thinking that rhythm games were a lot more worthwhile-I still think that, but I'm now reckoning with how, at the end of the day, all types of arcade games are designed to encourage you to keep putting in that money. It's just that for rhythm games, because it doesn't really matter how well you perform, making the game compelling to play comes from making it fun. Maybe I'm not so different from those kids with balls of tickets...
I know that one day I'm gonna stop playing these games and going to arcades. But I haven't hit my ceiling yet in the games I main, and I'm intent on getting as far as I can before that happens-I want to look back on it and think "fuck yeah, I made it to Rainbow in Chuni, or Imperial in SDVX, or ADV 10 in Pump". I have a talent for this, and I need to see how far I can really take it if I wanna truly walk away from it happy.

oh there are 2 things that are recommended for maimai
aime card (basically a memory card)
gardening gloves (low friction for slides)
but to get started you don't even need those two, just try it out and see if you like the tappy game.
