the reason for some of the smooth controls is due to application. for 3D aiming and steering and the like, my preference is to place a position in front of the player object, and then move that position using an input such as a joystick or mouse and then align the player object to align with the vector from player object to steering pos. the effect can either me instant, or delayed, like in panzer dragoon, but always gives smooth input, holds even more true if used with analog inputs. digital are always a bit wonky
38:32 each music track you hear in Aironauts is actually a shortened form of the original recording - the songs in the game tend to last 2 minutes and a half before fading out, but the actual recordings are considerably longer and contain some more composition. I was sent a few of the unedited tracks by composer Chris Scudds, including one that wasn't actually used in the game at all called Scraper City (likely from a level of the same name that was scrapped from the final version of the game), and have in fact uploaded them recently on my channel and I can tell you that the difference between what you hear in the game and the uncut version of the music can be astounding. The Penton V theme especially suffered from being cut short, and Alcajazz had an extended intro and outro which to me makes it sound way more epic than it already is.
This video was my first time ever coming across it! It's mad. Wish I enjoyed it more but I'd still love to see it get a bit more attention, figure there would be a lot of people who would really digg it. Thanks for watching! :)
39:19 Oh my, looking at the profile pic I had back then makes me cringe. I was only just made aware that this video existed a few days ago...thanks for the shout out. I don't feel that I precisely struck gold by uploading the soundtrack, because like you've mentioned it earned very little views for each video. For years, the theme for Penton V was the one that racked up the most views but then it was eventually surpassed by Alcajazz and I wondered why but now I know. Funny story: I didn't really mean to upload all of the music, in 2015 I uploaded the three tracks that you can play with Windows Media Player when you mount the game's ISO. Almost two years later I uploaded the rest of it because an user called Adam Demeter requested it, and I used a PSX data ripping utility to get the whole thing. I have the feeling that TH-camrs have given the game a second lease of life, because let me tell you, eight years ago if you tried to look for Aironauts on this site there was just the playthrough by Renegade and the three soundtrack vids by me. Now however there are many search pages' worth of uploads related to the game. Which is really cool for that to have happened.
Well I'm very glad you did! Archiving these old and forgotten tracks is important work and making it easily accessible for folks like me is a great service, so thank you for that!
54:13 so like Road Blaster/Road Avenger FMV Dragons lair type game with 3+ whole minutes of cell drawn Animation of the a Red car from the opening of Double Dragon Exploding.
The wheel was so close to Firebugs. It’s a super fun game. It’s effectively Rollcage 3, same dev, same game engine, same concept, just with bright kid friendly visual design.
Praise be to the wheel, my game was finally chosen! I knew you would enjoy it! Now, you are ready for Steel Harbinger, looking forward to the day the wheel will let you review it. You know, you had to first play The Raven Project before Steel Harbinger to not miss a reference to it in the opening FMV
so I'm going through the playlist and all i can think is if these videos took a horror arg type turn where the wheel became sentient and started taking over i would not be mad.
12:40 - this reminds me of the setup to Broken Helix, have you covered that? It's jank city, but the dialog was hilarious and branching narrative structure ambitious, kinda cool.
Your stuff is really good man! Means a lot coming from you, appreciate it. Just gonna keep working away, improving over time and hope the videos keep reaching the right people :)
The Wheel Will Provide and it did deliver. Aironauts really looks like something I would enjoy, I put it on my "Games from the wheel I will eventually get, I promise" list.
The drinking game. Take a swig: 1. Every time he calls Hybrid a nightmare. 2. Every time a bad game is almost saved by amateur artwork/FMV. 3. "The game wants to be __________" 4. A better soundtrack than the game deserves.
Me midway during editing "God I hope nobody notices how much I used the word nightmare repeatedly in this video and uses it as a rule in a drinking game"
Back in the day I completly loved Hexen that I had and I still have on Nintendo 64 ! So the first time I heard about Hybrid, I wanted to have it but I never had the chance to buy it ! Your video confirms that it's an interesting game for me, because that's what I'm looking for the FPS genre in the PS1. Of course, it won't have tha same level design complexity and background quality as Hexen, it's a clearly less polished game but I think it's an interesting game for me. Aeronauts seems also very interesting, very different from what I know from the PS1 library, I also want to give it a shot. The two other games, if I find them very cheap why not, but nothing that interesting. Nice video as always.
There is actually a game for the ps3 and Xbox 360 that sort of does what rockem sockem was trying to do. It was the tie in to Real Steel. It was made by yukes, of all companies, and was more akin to a rather solid boxing game
I am really wsorry your channel is not more known and viewed. Your content is top notch: the analysis and depth of the reviewed games are one of the best i have seen in youtube
Sean you are a true inspiration for me , as I have a greek TH-cam channel , where I make retrospectives about retro survival horror videogames 😁 Your dedication and passion helps me to cope up with the difficulty of balancing work with content creation 💪
Amazing to hear! It can be exhausting balancing work and content creation, but it's a really satisfying feeling knowing you put your all into something and seeing it come to fruition. Makes it all worth it. You channel sounds really interestng, I'll make sure to check it out soon! Keep it up and trust the process :)
@@horrorgaminghistorian1289 haha you were right but I could still see you are putting a lot of effort into the videos, they're really well put together. It's always nice to see video game content in different languages, makes the hobby more accessible to more people. Keep up the great work!
@Horror Gaming Historian Hey, your channel sounds really cool! Any chance for English subtitles at some point? Also, I'm kind of an expert on that subject, as well (I literally wrote my PhD dissertation on the Resident Evil series) - we should talk! (Sorry, Sean, but this is cool, and I am absolutely going to try to connect if I can!)
I really need to give Aironauts a shot, I've played demo version back in the day, seen your demo playthrough and now this. Another amazing episode, I hope for this series to never end, praise the Wheel! Also, I love that Croc and Parasite Eve Music. Can't wait for another video Sean.
Another great video! Its a shame about The Raven Project. There are so many FMV games that I wish I liked more. I do wish the space SIM-with-FMV genre would get a revival though.
What kind of monster nominates a Cryo game?? ;) The wheel didn't provide much this episode eh? I kept seeing Aironauts on Ebay but never took the plunge, but it sounds decent actually. Rock em sounds interesting, but disappointing Paradox didn't stick the landing. Awesome episode, digged the Croc music at the end too O.O
Almost definitely, but I still think it would have ended up quite the obscurity. Most FPS games kinda faded in the shadow of games like Doom and Alien Trilogy early on and then with games like Quake II & Medal of Honor later in the system's life.
Aironauts is the reason I love PSX games. Weird idea with a weird aesthetic and gameplay not quite there but altogether interesting enough you’d wish it was better. Robot arenas cgi fmv looks amazing to me, while hybrid does not at all. The 3DO game seems more interesting. A bit disappointed with Cryo here, but at least the cutscenes have a slight Dune vibe. Overall a rather mundane selection for me.
Yeah definately the weakest line up of games so far, at least in terms of stuff you'd actually want to play. I'm surprised we havnt seen more episodes like this, there's some really rough games floating around in that wheel 😅
So, many of these games basically suck except for the music? Really cool to see a look at a bunch of games I never played though. And to be reminded of a fair few I did. Great series.
How did you manage to catch the image of the 90’s in your music. Every time I hear your intro or it goes to the next game, I picture that industrial style grungy dark brown look. Metal grates steel beams and rock music all flood my mind. Seems odd when I type it out lol. That’s the aesthetic I associate in my head for the 90’s, well that and Evil Disco (Static X)!! 🤣
Hell yeah Static X! A lot of it just comes from piecing together a lot of vivid memories I have from the time period, that almost rusty brown aesthetic I usually associate with the industrial stuff coming out in the 90's. Fear Factory, NIN, a little Aphex Twin, not to mention its prevalence in rock/grunge. It sounds like such an odd thing to describe but I completely get it man 😂
Here from Bubsy video. Raven project looks like any other 3d shooter. But I never liked the genre, even the supposed best of the best like Panzer Dragoon or Rogue Squadron. But I don't see anything that makes it offensively bad. Looks like a 5/10, competent attempt at the genre but bland and boring.
Sean i hope you never stop making these obscure PSX games videos 😁 Your channel is an oasis for every retro gamer 👏👏
I just found this channel and I love it. I've been watching non stop

Rock-Em Sock-Em robots arena looks to be based on the line of action figures released in the '00s that featured swappable limbs on the robots.

Question about Hybrid... Do you think that if it has come out in 1997, that it would've done better?
Almost definitely, but I still think it would have ended up quite the obscurity. Most FPS games kinda faded in the shadow of games like Doom and Alien Trilogy early on and then with games like Quake II & Medal of Honor later in the system's life.
