Even as a kid Last Crusade was my favorite of the Indiana Jones films. As an adult, that hasn't changed, but my reaction to it has. I had a difficult relationship with my father growing up, and it wasn't until I was nearing 30 that we started to develop a better relationship. Unfortunately, he died before we could get too far. Now, when i watch the film, I break down crying every time I get to the scene on the cliff.
"I thought I'd lost you, Boy". Tears. Every time.

Last Crusade used to be my favorite, but while I don't like it any less I prefer Raiders now. Not by a whole lot though.
I'm sorry for your loss. That's how I feel when I watch this movie as well. Last Crusade is my personal favorite due to the bond and chemistry between The Jones's. Seeing how much was lost between them makes me want to value and appreciate the time with my father everyday.

I don't hate Crystal Skull by any measure but if it had never existed this would have been a perfect send-off.
Was the TV show really that bad? I heard it was one of the most expensive ever made, the equivalent of Game of Thrones now.
Fun thing is, when I watched the Terminator movies recently I stopped at 2 in part because Sarah Connor says "it's over" at the end, and then I stopped Indy at this movie because of the last shot. Although it was also partially because watching these movies feels kind of exhausting.

Hope they don't make a fifth...I think, very unfortunately, Harrison Ford is too old to play this character.
It blows my mind that this was made pre-90s. It still feels so fresh.

Good practical effect are timeless! Combined with exellent acting and directing and you get golden films like these.
My favorite of the three. It was hilarious, had great action scenes, just overall a great story, and an iconic ending.
As much as I love the first one, this one captures Indy in the best light, in my opinion.
The Last Crusade is definitely my favorite of the original trilogy. I really love the dynamic between Harrison Ford & Sean Connery which is still the best father-son relationship on-screen. It success was proved as being the No.1 movie worldwide. It's still the best ending to the series proving there was no need for kingdom of the crystal skull.

Agreed! Back in '89, I thought the father-son relationship was bullshit. Now that my father and I are about the same ages as Indy and his dad, I find my father and I have the same kind of relationship!
I think Harrison should've done more Indy movies in the 80s and 90s. There should've been 10 of these films out already. It would've been so great. We missed out on his adventures in the 1940s.

Between Raiders and Last Crusade, my favorite of the two is always the one I'm currently watching.
Recently did a back to back of them and they still hold up. It is impressive (tried to watch Temple of Doom, my first in the Indiana Jones movies, and I cringe every time Willie comes in).

For the life of me. I don't remember this movie in 1989. I remember batman and ghostbusters very well but not Indiana Jones and the last crusade. For some reason I keep thinking it came out during the mid 1990s like 95 96.

Haha, thank you for this comment. So true if seems that anytime they worked together, whenever Spielberg’s view wasn’t taken, things went astray. In Crystal Skull it seems Lucas got more of wishes followed.

yeah Lucas is good with fantasy stuff more than anything. Spielberg can do both though fantasy and more grounded stuff.
The lesson here is don't let Lucas have any input in the story. He's an untalented hack and the success of Star Wars was down to his wife and other people's ideas.
@@ethanbrock5453 Lucas is fine with people to reign him in. That's why you seen a huge drop in quality between Empire and Jedi. Lucas needed Kasdan and his ex to keep his dumb shit in line.
The little leitmotif that plays whenever the Grail is mentioned has always been one of my favorite pieces of John Williams music
The final shot of the 4 of them riding off into the sunset was beautiful & a perfect way to wrap up the series....until they made the Crystal Skull UGGH

I absolutely agree. Kind of sad it was over but you knew that their adventures would continue, we just wouldn't see them. I felt the same way at the end of Return Of The Jedi.
Honestly Dial of Destiny was worse I could accept Indy settling down with Marion but....alas

The Last Crusade is a really good movie, and it's also what a good movie sequel should be.
The best thing about the point & click adventure game was that it came with a physical Grail Diary that you actually had to refer to from time to time for clues.

Yeah, it did actually. It was a fully fleshed out object in a LOT of ways and really high production value while also acting as a sneaky form of copy protection, since you needed the clues in the diary to get past the Venice library stained glass window puzzle, which as I recall, was randomized and thus you had to refer to what was essentially a code guide in the diary (or I could have just been terrible at that puzzle, since I remember getting stuck on it a LOT since I was like, seven years old and it was hard to wrap my young mind around). Mind you, this was a 2nd form of subtle copy protection, as there was a more overt form with this sort of red gelled "look through this lens on a page of random numbers to reveal the access code" form of physical copy protection too.
Honestly, back in the day, I'm pretty sure half of the cost of a Lucasfilm game was in the physical stuff, not just the game. Indy came with the grail, the secret magic lens thing, a more standard game manual, like 6 floppy disks and then all your standard Lucasfilm merchandise brochures (you could buy an Indy hat!) and LucasArts' weird kind of newsletter announcement brochure with a Sam and Max comic in it, all in a big high quality cardboard box.

This is my favorite movie from the franchise, i love them all, but “The Last Crusade” is very special to me. Its the one i remember the most from my childhood, and i might be the only one here, but i personally always loved the “blue screen” fx in “The Last Crusade”. Even as a kid i noticed them, but they never bothered me, in fact it was the complete opposite for me, i always thought they were part of the charm of the movie. Im a huge fan of Indiana Jones, i loved all the movies and i always will, they are in the same category as the original unaltered Star Wars trilogy, they are simply magical to me! I cant wait for Indina Jones 5!!
This is honestly one of my favourite films, it’s so funny and entertaining. But more than that it has great characters and existential themes. It’s Spielberg in his zenith.

Same. I remember watching Last Crusade at the cinema when it was released thirty years ago, and watching it on the big screen still remains one of the most enjoyable cinematic experiences I've had.
Hmm, I also saw it in the cinema... but dubbed into Czech, my native language. I was disappointed. It lacked humor for me. Then I saw the original. :-) So many jokes were lost in the translation. :-) I love this film.
1989 was a golden time. In fact, 1989-1991 was three of the best years in cinema.

I spoke to one of the ILM artists a few months ago without realising it. I was putting together a documentary on Robot Wars and I knew he was the creator of the sport, while doing research before the interview I found out he worked on the melting head from Raiders as well as the aging effects for Last Crusade and the slime bathtub from GB2!
Donovan's aging sequence frightnened me so much as a kid, it was horrific! I still don't like watching it now heh!
ladyretro Made as Oliver explains in this video but the actual models of the face and head were created using radio control suction cups which would pull the skin into the head to make the skin appear like it was aging and wrinkling. Fantastically creative stuff, scared the hell out of me too!!
So damn clever! I'd get behind the sofa when I knew it was coming. After Raiders' melting heads it should have been a breeze to watch but nope!
ladyretro I think the Thriller video scared me as a kid too, and when I watched Last Crusade it was around the same time and as horrible as it sounds the puppet kinda looks like Michael Jackson for a few frames from Thriller, its the way that the head goes back and the eyes open.
DarkLordSaxon, just out of curiosity, did the ILM artist mention how long it took to create the melting head and ageing effects (for Raiders and Last Crusade)? It would've been fascinating to hear his anecdotes/memories of his experiences. You have a great channel by the way - your Ghostbusters: Trip to New York video is very cool :)
As a young brit watching this in the cinema in summer '89, the suspense around the villain was never there. I had seen Empire Strikes Back, For Your Eyes Only, PD James' Cover Her Face also Doctor Who City of Death and Blakes 7 Breakdown. So I knew then: Julian Glover only plays villains.
Julian Glover has the dubious honour of being the villain in Star Wars, Indiana Jones, James Bond and Doctor Who. That's some achievement!
And Harry Potter! He's the voice of *Aragog* 🕷

Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite out of the trilogy (we don't speak of the 4th one) but Last Crusade might be the most heartfelt and entertaining to watch

I liked the 4th one. The story of aliens in early human history always intrigues me and I'm glad they did an Indy film about it. I just didn't care for the cgi in the jungle. Mutt William's swinging on the vines like Tarzan was a bit too much.
IT WAS SEEMS THAT THE FIRST OUT OF ANY SERIES IS ALWAYS THE BEST!

I love this movie. My favorite parts are the "I thought I lost you boy." scene and especially The Let It Go scene. The Let It Go part is a very beautiful moment, the acting from Connery and Ford really bring a Father and Son moment like it was real in some way. Williams music on that part even tugs the heartstrings as well.

21:16 I remember the point and click adventure game very well! So many well done visual gags and alternate paths. It was the first time I ever bought a guide book, though, because I often got stuck!
When I finally got to the end of the game and found the grail, but managed to NOT get the cave destroyed, the Knight bid us farewell. Then he turned around again and said something like "And thanks for not wrecking the place, you should have seen what the LAST guys did!" ☠

Here in Poland they played all three Indiana Jones movies on TV over the Easter weekend in 2002. I was eight. The weather was just starting to get warm. I had my whole life ahead of me. Good times.

I don't care if it does follow the same beats of Raiders. Last Crusade does them better. It's the best movie of its kind. It's thrilling. It's emotional. And . . . fuck it, I'll say it, it's goddamn spiritual is what it is!

Last Crusade holds a special place in my heart because I got to see it in theaters with my father before even learning what the plot was about. A new cinema had just opened and my dad got tickets to a special premiere showing. That cinema has long since closed down but that bonding memory has never left.
have you guys ever hear or seen indiana jones the adaptation ? its a shot-for-shot remake of the original made in 1989 by fans it took seven years to make.
Yes, heard of it & seen parts of it as it was featured on local news in my area some time ago. I admire their dedication, but the project looked terrible. They could probably have made a decent film if they'd put as much effort into making something original.

I've always wondered about the use of catacombs in Venice. As far as I know, there aren't any - as Venice sits on wooden pilings in a lagoon.
My favorite Indiana Jones movie. Undoubtedly, the relationship between Harrison Ford's Indiana and Sean Connery's Henry Jones is the heart of the movie. And everything about the movie from the action, the dialogue, the humor is just great.
I think you outdid yourself with this retrospective. Easily the best of the two dozen I've seen so far.

I've grown to love all 4 movies for what they bring to the table. Skull because it was my first one in theaters and the original 3 was because my dad wanted us to watch the movies before we saw Crystal Skull.
Adding Connery to Ford was a stroke of genius. It "outfoxes the sequel syndrome" as Ford said. The Lethal Weapons would follow suit--adding new and interesting characters to the initial mix each sequel.
Oliver was 6 years old, I was 16 years old - saw it in cinema in Macclesfield with my younger brother.

I remember when "Innerspace" came out (produced by Spielberg) on VHS, it was in widescreen and opened with a note from Spielberg himself, praising the decision. It was my first real education in widescreen vs pan-and-scan as a kid and I became a crusader for "letterboxed" movies from that day forward.
Man I've watched this retrospective 5 times now. Excellent work 👍
My personal favorite movie in the franchise
This film feels more connected to Raiders of the Lost Ark than Temple of Doom. Indy is searching for a Christian relic the Nazis are on his tale and it has the most returning characters. Mainly Marcus and Sallah. This is probably because of the risk of Temple of Doom. People needed something more familiar.
Samuel Barber Temple of Doom was a prequel.

Oliver, FANTASTIC video. Possibly one of your greatest to date. Your breakdown on why you subjectively prefer Crusade to the Objectively better Raiders completely captures how I feel, and as I've seen expressed by countless opinions on the internet, a lot of other people feel.

Great review and I totally agree that this is the best in the series and the character development /interaction was awesome. Love this movie.
TLC is good and all but I feel he played it too safe to make up for the bad press and dark tone about ToD (which is awesome BTW).
TOD is actually a really fun movie.
Flayne009 Absolutely. I consider TLC to be the weakest film for this reason. Say what you will about TOD but at least that film had the balls to completely go out on a limb.
I'd even consider the first forty minutes of Crystal skull to be more entertaining and daring than TLC.
Tod is awesome ! ! The other two are just a little more awesome.
It's a lot more tonally consistent than Temple which alternates between dark subject matter and goofy schlock.
