  • The New Tesla Model 3 Performance has recently been announced with loads of power and is much faster than it's predacessor. The Tesla Model S Plaid is even faster and it's from the class above. In this episode, we'll be comparing theses wonderful vehicles to see which makes sense to purchase!

Man how i wish the model 3 performance got the drivers display behind the steering wheel so it could stand out even more than the standard and long rang

You can add an aftermarket screen. I did that on my 2022 Model 3 Performance. when I got it, there were not that many options,, so mine blocks the AC vents a little bit as it is mounted on the dash. New ones are now smaller and mounted on the steering column, and they don't block the AC vents. That is the only option for the new Model 3 Performance Highland (2024 and up) since the dash is different. Prices are actually not bad ranging between $300 and $500. You will need to take apart some panels and run some cables, but it can be done in a couple of hours and is not that difficult. Al those aftermarket displays have WiFi so they connect to your home WiFi or your phone hot spot and perform their own updates when needed (usually when Tesla updates the interface and the display needs to integrate again). No big deal really. Best part is that those screens have all the information you need to drive and they look like they were stock from Tesla.

Sadly, this is little more than a hyped up review of spec sheets. Anyone who's driven both of these cars will tell you that they drive radically differently. The model S plaid simply is a cumbersome car if you plan to take it on a track and you will have to replace the suspension. It does not handle nearly as well as the performance model 3 or for that matter even the older performance model 3. It is not a car for autocrossing, and it's probably not even a car for fast tracks without an enormous amount of work. It's motor easily outdrives it brakes and handling capabilities. Folks who have autocross the Plaid are almost universally unhappy with its behavior stock and despite its much better acceleration and power to weight ratio it's probably no faster around a lot of courses because of its relatively poor vehicle Dynamics and difficulty controlling at the limit. Talk to anybody who's driven one on the track and they'll tell you it is not a car you want to take on the track not without replacing the entire suspension and probably the stock braking system also

The question is not which one you want or choose, but which one you can AFFORD. If you can afford either, the answer is simple: Model S Plaid. If you can barely afford the Model S Plaid, unless you must have the fastest acceleration and/or the additional space, you most likely will be fine with the Model 3 Performance and save a lot of money. As for me, I currently own a 2022 Model 3 Performance, and will keep it until it is paid off in a few years, then sell it. By then the Model S will probably be updated just like the Model 3 was done this year, so the question for me will be the budget. If I can afford it, I will go for the Model S Plaid (or equivalent by that time), otherwise, will probably get another Model 3 Performance. My real reason to get a Model S Plaid is the acceleration, but also the comfort and of course the additional space. But money will decide... and I cannot complain about having a Model 3, it is amazing, so if I get another one later, I will be happy. Cheers

As someone who's driven both the Model S Plaid and the new Model 3, I'd choose the Performance all day. It's smaller, build a little better(believe it or not), and looks better IMO.

i'm waiting to see the updates for the 2025 model s, hoping they add considerable improvements. overall due to range and size, i'm leaning towards a model s, having already purchased a model 3 rwd last year

Model s eats through tires due to the air suspension. Just saying u better have a fat wallet.

Easily resolved with a camber or spacer kit. Also, the ‘19 rims don’t have that problem.

I’m struggling so much with this decision. I’m ready to buy.
It’s not between the plaid & performance.
It’s between Performace 3 & model S long range. Basically same speed
    Barely any difference in comfort.
    More room
    I’m conflicted.

Im deciding between the current LR and a new one possibly next year. The M3P is too small of a car for me and even with “ludicrous” mode it’s still slower than the LR by a fair amount. I’m not tracking my car. It will be a 100% road car DD for me and it’s plenty car for that. MS LR all day long.
