- When I was in Tokyo I got to eat okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) at a restaurant known as Sometaro Okonomiyaki (染太郎). More details here: migrationology....
Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) is sort of a craze food in Japan; It is that's very common to eat along with beer, but at the same time it's a favorite for the kids as well. I have to first admit, that I'm not a huge fan of pancakes - I'm much more of a rice kind of guy - I've never really liked pancakes all that much in my life. But when I was in Tokyo, I needed to eat okonomiyaki. I had seen it outside of Japan many times before, but I had never tried it myself. Located very close to the hotel I was staying at Tokyo, I found a restaurant known as Sometaro Okonomiyaki (染太郎). We arrived a little bit early before they opened for lunch, and there were already a couple of people waiting outside to get in. So of course that's a good sign for restaurant from the beginning.
First of all Sometaro Okonomiyaki (染太郎), is just an awesome looking restaurant. From the outside it looked like a crumbling shack, and there was an orange tree that covered half of the roof. Walk inside and it feels like you're entering into a hut, but the restaurant opens up, and has an extremely warm and friendly feel to it. I loved the wood floors and the beautiful antiques that were decorated throughout the restaurant. The staff are also extremely friendly and happy to see us in the the restaurant sampling their delicacies.
There were a number of different pancakes styles on the menu, and we chose the house specialty, which was called something like asonomiyaki (not sure exactly), and then we also went for the classic okonomiyaki (お好み焼き). The asonomiyaki was a combination of pancake batter, mixed with cabbage, some pieces of seafood like bits of octopus, a few assorted other vegetables, and noodles. Everything was fried on a hot skillet in front of us, and assembled into a pancake like round shape. One thing you have to love about eating okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) in Japan, is how it's cooked right in front of you, so that you can enjoy the atmosphere of the restaurant while you eat.
Once both of the savory pancakes were cooked, the waitress first helped us to cut it, like a pizza, into four slices. She then proceeded to decorate it by squeezing on some mayonnaise, adding some sauce that was like a light teriyaki sauce with worcestershire sauce, and finally sprinkled on some seaweed flakes on to the top. You can you can think of okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) just as a savory pancake, fried battered that's mixed with an assortment of vegetables, some pieces of seafood, and some noodles mixed in. It's a mishmash of both ingredients, and probably cooking techniques and styles of a number of different cultures as well.
Overall okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) is good and tasty, and Sometaro Okonomiyaki (染太郎) was an absolutely awesome restaurant, but I'm not a huge fan of the dish. To me it sort of lacks spice. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad at all, in fact it was very good, but I'm just more of a guy who loves to eat things like rice and curry, or sashimi - something with a bit more protein and meat. Okonomiyaki was sort of like eating a fresh bag of potato chips, kind of junk food tasting. That was my first experience in Japan to eat okonomiyaki (お好み焼き), and more than the food, I enjoyed the atmosphere and the experience of dining at Sometaro Okonomiyaki (染太郎).

You are awesome mark
Next time, because it's easier, remember to flip towards yourself and cut the okonomiyaki into mouth size pieces with the silver spatula. If you feel it lacked spice, I think you needed to add much more "sauce."
In the Kansai region, Okonomiyaki is actually eaten with rice, which us folks in Tokyo can't believe because that's carbs on carbs, but I guess it works for them well! ;)
Mark, you better go to Osaka or Hiroshima next time! They have the real taste of Okonomiyaki! But nice video man! Thanks!
Mark, this is one of the first times that I have ever heard you be less than enthusiastic about what you have eaten! I like your new objectivity, here. I really do. Carry on, that way.
I could tell it wasn't that great because you didn't go nuts after taking your first bite but I think the experience alone would be totally worth it.
***** ha, yes true. I would have preferred another bowl of sukiyaki or sashimi rice bowl.
You know when he acts like he's in heaven when he drinks water it's most likely normal. But when he says something is not bad with a plain face it's probably lethal.
Okonomiyaki was one of the best experiences I've ever had in Japan!
Great to hear that!
That looks so delicious Mark! I'm now considering going to Japan for this! YUMM!
Thanks Eric, cool that would be great if you visited Japan.
You're killing me with your blog/vlog Mark. It's the best one ever. God bless you for all your incredible suggestions
wow, you finally said something different than "delicious"!
Mark I could definetly see you having your own tv show on travel channel, hell you could run the whole show !
Hey Drew, I really appreciate your support, thank you!
Hi Mark. I always enjoy your video, but I must say this now: You have chosen a WRONG restaurant!! It is a bad idea to eat Okonomiyaki in Tokyo. You should go to Osaka (or Hiroshima) to enjoy REAL AUTHENTIC Okonomiyaki. Japan is actually larger than you think it is, and each district has its own characteristic food culture. Trust me, I'm from Osaka, Japan.
Why do they ware mouth caps in the video?
IamGonova Prevent the spread of germs lot's of people wear it in Asian countries
This is so true!~ Osaka has the best Okonomiyaki
IamGonova She was probably sick.
If I'm going to Japan should I wear a mouth cap too?
I liked your honesty. Usually everything you eat tastes good for you. And you said "not bad" on this one.
Thank you very much. Yah, this wasn't my favorite food, it just didn't have a strong enough, or distinct enough flavor for me. But I'm not a huge pancake lover.
besides rice and noodles, it seems that eggs are the next most commonly used ingredient across Asia.
Hey Chris, yah eggs are very popular. I've often thought eggs are one of the world's most universal foods.
+Mark Wiens don't forget chicken and fish
@@evanmcclure4672 eggs just a bit more, as its ALWAYS cheaper than chicken or fish. Some tribes rather steal eggs of (big)birds as they are much more frequent to get than killing and eating the full bird.
Your face when you take a bite of food and you like it makes me happy xD
*"Not Bad, not bad" means passable, hungry thumbs up Mark & Ying!*
you can make your own okonomiyaki recipe like you put like flour and water inside it you put wonton chips inside and you put a bacon inside and you put cabbage with the okonomiyaki and one egg on top and you put fried noodles on it and dont forget furiakake with it I seen a okonomiyaki in japan I went with my mom and dad sister and my grandma dont forget back then in 2004
First vid that I didn't see the face that you make when food is good
I like your honesty. When you don't like it you're very honest about it. Not like that other video I was watching where the African-American female food blogger pretended to the nice Korean lady that she liked that red bean delicacy but when the lady turned her back this blogger faced the camera and said she didn't like it afterall.
Carol X. No. I don't think she is being nice. I think she is plastic, meaning she's fake with her personality.
Why was it important to say her ethnicity? If she had been White would you have mentioned that? Be honest
Why was it important to say her ethnicity? If she had been White would you have mentioned that? Be honest.
What's her race got to do with it..Why even mention that.Hows that relevant to your point...Idiot
Hey Mark I love this video and the reason why is that in every one that I have seen you do you LOVE all the food and I always wondered if you were faking it but in this one you said it wasn't your favorite and I was happy to see you being honest and it makes me feel better about all the other videos of yours I have seen. Great Job :)
Amazing and delicious. Really funny meal. Thanks to show and enjoy it! Greetings!
You're welcome, thank you for watching.
Before you even ate the food, i was thinking the same exact things you said about the dish LOL
I reckon your taste buds are totally Indonesian dude, you got that extreme chilli/pungent flavoured tastebud (from what i've seen)! If you ever go to indonesia, let me know, i can find a good list of food to try - even the more traditional, uncommon food.
You got the best food show dude, peace.
Hey Lucid Knight, ha, thanks for watching and your prediction. Yah, I do love things like raw garlic, chilies, and shrimp paste. Where are you from in Indonesia?
Mark Wiens i think you will like martabak telor from indonesia, it's meat, spring onions and egg batter, wrapped with thin spring roll skin served with pickled cucumber, carrot and finger chillies it's more spicier than okonomiyaki. there's also a sweet version which share the same name but totally different ingredient
no way. okonomiyaki is like one of the best things on the planet!!
Glad you like it! I think it's good, but I would rather eat a rice and sashimi bowl.
Japanese food culture is so interesting and intriguing. It feels like that even most of the street food and fast food is healthier than say Northern American or European. It also is amazing to see these small restaurants and street shops with their owners. Japanese food is definitely something I hope to get the chance to try in Japan. Not a chance that the westernized versions could ever live up to the original.
I'd love to eat okonomiyaki. Thanks to you both for this nice video.
It look fun cooking yourself for it so you don,t look bad to do it your own dinner I like that Very good God bless.
ive been to this place once. it was really old and interesting. they had like old signatures on the walls. they even had like a PIZZA okonomiyaki from what i recall. great place. it was in asakusa...on the way to kappabashi.
Hey, yup that exactly right, near Asakusa. The restaurant itself was really awesome, so many interesting things and antiques around it.
During my time in Japan, Okonomiyaki was the only thing I didn't really like. I'm not really a huge fan of cabbage or mayo, and I kinda had to force it down because of the fish skin. But it wasn't that bad, and the experience of having it cook on that built in grill right in front of you is just too cool.
Hey Mark this looks delicious. In Singapore they sell the same thing called Japanese pizza. One shop sell it and mix the ingredient well. That was delicious. You should come to Singapore and try Singapore's chilli crad and toasted chicken rice. U can get them as low as S$2
Thank you for watching Nivash. Thanks for sharing about the Singapore version, yes I'm hoping to visit Singapore. Are you from Singapore?
I know how you feel!! When the food you eat is not so good as you expect, you'll get disappointed at it.
I've had the same experience as you. There are a large number of Ramen shops in Japan so I sometimes I choose a Ramen shop at random. And I ask myself, "I shouldn't have chosen it."
Such great videos Mark!
Thanks for making me hungry again!
great video.
You're welcome, thank you for watching Wit.
When I went to Japan several years ago, I didn't like the Okonomiyaki either. It's an interesting dish that doesn't mesh when actually made.
Liked the honest opinion Mark and your take on what would make that dish better.
Thanks, appreciate it.
Had some okonomiyaki in hiroshima (their specialty dish), was so good. This makes me hungry for one :D
Hey Akito, good to hear from you. I'd still love to try the version in Hiroshima.
shit, you have an awesome life Mark, i'm damn jealous, anyway you should let your wife participate in some of the video, if she have not speak well enough, then maybe, she could appear in eating scene with you and do a little bit speaking, but concentrate in physical expression :p that might make the video more interesting hehe, just some of my thought hope that you dont might, and other thing i wish that you will have more of the review in countries in America continent. your review is awlay amazing and have kind of a possible vibe, watching ur video always make my day, cheer man
Shalom--couldn't agree more.
Hey Nguyen Hung, thank you very much for your kind words, and for watching my videos, and the feedback. Yah, I would like my wife to be in some videos, but she's not so interested yet... so we'll see. I'm hoping we can do some more traveling in the Americas, would especially love to visit South America to do some eating - hopefully in the future. Have you traveled in South America?
I am glad you don't think everything is awesome. It gives me confidence!
i love watching your great videos man.
Thank you.
one of my dreams is to visit Tokyo Japan and enjoy your meals
I like your honest comment.
I love this good. My fav... Hope to go to Japan someday
Thanks Rindi, hope you can go too.
Hi Mark,
you should open your own restaurant, selling food from all over the world.
watchin all ur videos,i notice one thing,if you like the food, you will like move your head left/right. Its cool btw.
'just a little bit of mayonaise.. not too much'.... that bit made me laugh :)
Assumiing there lived a man of eating everything , I believe him unable to love every cuisine served in every corners of the world. Anybody can't help but to have limited palate. So does Mark.
You said it's not a dainty meal but you had like 6 pounds of food in front out you. Haha. I love your work. Keep going!
Ha, thanks Marc. I felt like I wanted a oyako donburi (chicken rice bowl) after that!
This is my personal opinion. But, you had to go to Kansai area to take Okonomiyaki. There are two large cultural areas in Japan. One is Kanto area of which central city is Tokyo. Other is Kansai area of which central city is Osaka. I who was born and is living in Kanto area, can't help admitting that Okonomiyaki in Kansai area is much better than that in Kanto area. I agree that Okonomiyaki is a kind of snack. If you have a time, please try Okonomiyaki of Kansai area next time.
Yep. You picked the wrong town. What I love about Osaka okonamiyaki is how light and fluffy they are. Tokyo has loads of great foods, but never quite figured that dish out.
I also saw your review of a ramen stand, and you definitely have southeast asian taste buds. You put so much garlic in the ramen, I was shocked. Lol.
But, you are entitled to eat foods and like or dislike them anyway you feel. Keep up the good reviews. I just moved recently to Thailand and I am adjusting my taste buds to the food here.
Hi Mark Wiens... I love watching your videos...Try to visit here in the Philippines sometimes...there are also many delicious specialty foods here...hope you will have videos taken from here soon...:)
this guy is living the dream !
I like how you seemed like you mentally prepared for your reaction when something tastes awesome and then after you took the bite you looked kinda horrified, it was hilarious. But yeah, not everything that looks good tastes amazing and we can't like everything, but I still think it was worth trying for sure.
***** Thank you very much
Will they allow yo to eat the Okonomiyaki with a knife and fork, or does it have to be Chopsticks?
You didn't do the face when you first bit into the okonomiyaki! Haha I love your channel bro, keep it up! You should try filipino food!
Thanks a lot Nzo. I spent some time in the Philippines about 5 years ago, really enjoyed it and the food. Are you from the Philippines?
He may want to try to eat "Okonomi-yaki" in western part of Japan, easpecially in Osaka or Hiroshima. In those cities, he can enjoy authentic cuisine and he'd definitely lean his body.
Gah your videos are the best but they make me so hungry!
Thank you Kevin.
Hi Mark, I always enjoy your video. You have to try Okonomiyaki in Osaka. Okonomiyaki is from Osaka. Tokyo people don't know how to make it tasty. Takoyaki is also from Osaka. You should go to Osaka next to compare the taste. ;)
Wow that looks so good!!! It's like pizza/amulet... Verry interactive!
And it's a pancake? It kinda looked like u where at a Asian Pizza Hut when u take that one slice 😊 .... That next video with the balls, looks like desert. Mark have u thought about showing "international" candy ? Maybe @ the "end" of your videos? I know u don't like sweats , anyways, keep smiling! Eating! And living! 👍 peace out
Hey jimmy roberson good to hear form you. Thanks for watching, yah it is exactly like an interactive Japanese pizza. Hadn't thought about candy, but will think about that. Hope you're doing well.
Mark Wiens I'm doing better👍
First time I've seen that you didn't love something! It's good to know not everything is your favorite ^-^ I've never tried this dish myself but always wanted to. Have you ever eaten Ohmrice?
Haha, yes. No I've never had ohmrice. What is it?
It's a Japanese style omelet filled with a tomato fried rice with mayo and ketchup on top! (It can probably be found in different styles though) I've made it at home because it is something I wanted to try after watching a lot of Japanese youtubers (cooking with dog for my recipe) have it even though I've never been to Japan >.< I've found it spelled many different ways like Ohm-rice/Om-rice/Omu-Rice/Omelet Rice. If you are still in/or go back to Japan I'm sure you can find it somewhere ^-^
you videos are making me hungry!
Mark: "i"m just going to put a little bit of mayonnaise, not to much". Puts on a ton of mayonnaise ahahaha
Haha, but you should have seen how much other people were putting!
okonomiyaki and takoyaki are best in Osaka. you should go there and it those dishes in Osaka. You should also do 25 things to do in Osaka and videos on the foods you eat
awesome delicious dish👍💯😋💖😍
Hmm, when I've had okonomiyaki, it was always served with a sprinkling of katsuobushi as well as the sauce, furikaki, and mayo.
Your first one looked a bit less cooked than the ones we have had, though a runny egg is always delicious!
Like Siti Nabilah said, You the man Mark best videos on TH-cam 👍
I love your Japan vlogs :D
I love Mark yours Videos,Bjus do Brasilll!!
Thank you very much CEÇA!
Watching this video of yours in almost 2019 and sooo different from how you review now
I'm also a world traveler-foodie myself, but I'm still intrigued-fascinated with Japanese food & ingredients-very different. Hay as a fan I'm always curious about who's behind the camera and your crew look like. Can you do a behind the scenes video?
So unusual for you Mark to not really enjoy your meal! Try 7-11, heard its pretty good in Japan
Hey Julie, thanks for watching. I had a couple rice balls from 7-11, they were decent!
Chili Pepper sauce always make food taste better!!!
Yes Janice, glad you think so too!
Could this be true? Something you didn't actually enjoy?? Wow!
Hey Anoop, it was good, but it just didn't thrill my taste buds like other things. But I've never been a huge fan of pancake like things.
Good flip Mark, thats a cozy restaurant
Thanks Jack, it was a very cool restaurant.
I love Japan
Hey Thanks for for the great and Honest review!!!! Always fun to watch Mark! You need to do a tutorial with the chopsticks! I need some practice for sure :)
Your'e welcome Tom, thanks for watching. Ha, ok tutorial for chopsticks!
Still waiting...
I really love your videos Mark and I want you to try some Middle Eastern food, I'm sure you'll love it :)
Hello Moha, cool thanks for watching my videos. I really love Middle Eastern food, thought I haven't made any videos, I occasionally go out to eat for Middle Eastern food, love it!
Wishing you safety in Thailand during these challenging times.
Thank you very much Grand Puba, we're safe and doing well.
I hear great things about this dish. I wonder how it tastes like.
Thanks, I know many people really like it. I liked it, but I guess given the choice between a rice bowl topped with sashimi and this, I would always go for the sashimi.
Hi Mark, in Japan there is authentic and specialties food unique to their regions and every food there has they own unique technique ways how to eat it. I suppose you should ask locals for what and which is the best or maybe the best price with best taste and qualities. I think they'll very happy to share it with you. Not only in Japan but other countries too. I always happy and enjoy to your videos and your reviews about the food very much (especially the 'foodgasm' face). Cant wait to see another video!!! Peace (^.^)V
imlazyful Thank you very much for your tips and kind words. I agree, eating locals in each region or city is the best way to sample authentic and best tasting food. Are you from Japan? Which part? Thank you for watching my videos.
i'm Crazy to eat this ! i saw many videos of this dish ! i'm planning to cook in my home !
Hey Gustavo, good to hear from you, ok cool, hope you can try this at home!
Hello Mark ! haha nice, i'll film me cooking ;)
thanks for being honest.
今度は大阪に来てお好み焼きを食べてね~
美味しそう!!食べたい!!
Just a little bit of mayo, except the whole bottle looks pretty good.
Okonomiyaki isn't my personal favourite either but I really do think it's filling. I don't think it's meant to be super spicy and heavily seasoned though. I have normally have a couple of bites and I'm stuffed. I'm a big eater too, I could down a bowl of ramen no problem.
Good to hear from you, ha that's interesting about how it really fills you, I think we all have such different body makeups. I've never been a real big anything pancake lover in my life, I've always been more of a rice eater.
Mark Wiens I love watching your videos and do like to comment [always nice, love your videos]. I personally am not a big pancake person either. I just get really sick of pancakes after a one.Waffles are infinitely better. Much more a noodle and rice person. That might be the Vietnamese in me.
I'm Japanese and I think the amount of sauce is not enough.
Please try again it with more sauce Mark!!:)
shintaro k Hey, thank you for the tip, ok next time for sure I will add more sauce!
how fun
I contributed Japanese subtitles.
日本語字幕を追加しました。
Mark, it's ok to say the food is nasty. I mean, you paid for it. Anyway, I enjoy your travel adventure..especially when dining out.
Thanks for watching!
You should try Hiroshima's Okonomiyaki, that is delicious. Kansai's is not so good.
You didn't do the trademark Mark Wiens "delicious face" lol.
Hey William, wasn't my thing this time...
To be honest Mark it didn't really look like something is like to try. You need to pack a small salt and pepper shaker and take it with you LOL that and some chilli sauce :)
Hey thanks Ange, carrying some chili is a great idea!
I loveeee okonomiyaki !!! sadly I havent found a proper place to eat it in Toronto. >.
Hey Joy, glad you enjoy it. Do you make it yourself sometimes?
Mark Wiens I could try but I dont know what the batter is~ I guess i could find it online =P
Hi it’s 2021 here
Usually, when u love a dish, u would nod ur head fully at ur left side, but this video, u didnt. Looks like, u didnt liked it tht much as u was expecting Mark, lol..
Hey Hyun, yah it was a little bland for me, not bad, but not my favorite.
Mark Wiens Hahhaa, thats y i didnt see u nodding ur head as usual xD. Anyways, was a good video and it kinda made me hungry too watching this, Lol.
Nice one Wien
+Miguel Valero Chingguy likes Okonoyami Wien
Mark always says If it's not spicy I'm not eating.
Hey Mark you should find a tonkatsu and curry plate there in Japan or do a tempura challenge
Hey Brian, what is a tempura challenge? Is it a massive plate of tempura!?
Yup with a big bowl of rice
It's kinda like between egg foo young and a Korean pancake? I would ask for some chili Mark. Once a hot head always a hot head. I have to have spicy, or would it be insulting to the cook to ask for chili sauce? Different cultures have their little quirks as I'm sure you've learned.
Hey, yah that's a good comparison. It's sort of like a pancake or a pizza with no cheese. Hmm, not sure about asking for chili, but I'm not sure if they would have any at a place like this.
Always honest!
Thanks for watching.
Hey mark awesome videos could you do more indian street food reviews ?? Luv them
Thank you Aki. I would love to if I can travel again to India. Are you from India?
No im
Not from india but i watched all your videos of india and the. Food there looks awesomee so hopeingg you will be able to make it to india again and show us more awesome food reviews PS: Im from Germany
Mark Wiens I am,i that is what introduced me to your videos, stayed for your orgasmic face :) Love it man.
So a bland frisbee !!! I will give this one a miss Mark lol :)
Thanks Marcus.
It's kinda weird tasting food that is not drowned in chilies, huh?
I really don't no how you can eat all the raw eggs ! You are braver than me.
It's not raw, just the yolk is runny
Hey, thanks you for watching. Ok the other place was raw, but this one was mostly cooked, apart from the yolk, but I cut out some of the video, so it was cooking for a few minutes.
i guess i like my eggs well done hahaha
Looks Great
Thanks for watching.
