    It's absolutely outrageous how good this is- the arrangement is perfect and his execution is flawless. This piece is so beautiful, so synchronized, and so intricate- but he captures it perfectly. I love how he maintains the triplet feel in the background.
    On another TH-cam video of this movement- the full symphony version- someone commented that this piece is like hearing someone fall in love. I think Sean's version captures that perfectly. Absolutely gorgeous.

    Perhaps the only piano version of this movement that actually keeps the lyricism of the orchestral sound and avoids the trap of the percussive properties of the piano. I always find something new when listening to a piano transcription of an orchestral work: a fleeting harmony or a trick of rhythm that was hidden in a wash of strings. Sean Chen is a remarkably talented pianist Thank you for the best piano transcription of this work ever!.

      I agree with you. Transcriptions, mostly those for piano, shed a new light on the piece discovering middle voices. It's always good to hear how piece sounds with different timbre.

      It's funny that you should say these things, because although I have enjoyed piano versions of the Symphonic Dances, I find this transcription/performance to exactly exemplify the problem of the percussive properties of the piano. Partly it must be the particular lyrical softness of the original orchestral version. Perhaps also it is the nature of this particular piano and recording. It is certainly in part that the pianist does not observe the hierarchy of importance between the surface themes and inner intricacies. He plays everything as if it were equally important.

    I hesitated to listen to piano only since Rach's polyphony of multiple instruments taking melodic line in turn is so powerful, but I have to admit Sean Chen has done an incredibly beautiful job!

    Such a beautiful arrangement, but more than this is Sean's superb playing. Sean has such a lyrical and light touch, without pretentious embellishment that is absolutely beautiful to listen to (no extra kitsch). Having said that - I will not need the music score, because there is no hope of me improving on this. This is a diamond of a musical arrangement that should go into the musical archives for history

      @Sheet Music Library I downloaded the sheet music that's on the link a while ago, but now I'm realizing that it isn't a complete version (has aproximately the first 3 min of the performance), and Sean here plays some notes, particularly in the left hand, that are not written in the sheet. I went to the link again, but it doens't take me to the sheet anymore.
      Any idea what this is and how to fix it? I really want that sheet!

    This is a lovely rendition, but the symphony is too complex for a single piano. Inevitably, some passages seem unwieldy and clunky. A much better solution is with two pianos, and is found in Trifonov and Babayan's recital on DG. In glorious ultra HD sound, it is simply breathtaking. Check it out.

    • @TrilloSuede
      @TrilloSuede 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Volodos is fantastic in high-voltage virtuosic repertoire, but this Rachmaninoff Adagio is a very different type of piece - reflective, yearning, mournful - and I can't imagine anyone playing it better than Sean Chen plays it here.

    • @sanjosemike3137
      @sanjosemike3137 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have also heard Volodos. I think you are criticizing a "difference in style" more than quality. And there are differences.
      Sean is more restrained. Less bombastic. More lyrical. Volodos has a stunning technique, probably as strong as Liszt himself had. That can get in the way.
      Don't forget that he is doing this entirely from memory.
