Ken, great analysis, as always. There was a moment in the unboxing segment that came out of nowhere--and I haven't had a wheezing laugh for that long in MONTHS. I was dying, crying. Thank you.
I love this box set it was my first second sight. Purchase and boy was i not disappointed. This is everything i could ask for. As the hitcher has been one of my favorite films
The EASIEST, QUICKEST, and most satisfying $60 I've ever spent! Ken man, I was a misbehaving-ass kid in the 90s and I caught this late at night on Cinemax and it forever changed me. And this box set with all the doodads plus the transfer is UNREAL! Greatest 4K buy of 2024 for me!
Got this set the Thursday before release direct from _Second Sight_ so I did a speedy unboxing late that night (gotta treat my Subscribers to *something* as I'm so poor at keeping up with videos!)... I love this set because, to me, despite the cost, you can see where the money went (at least as long as you actually read or browse the book!). Great of them to not only put the extras on both discs but also putting Atmos on the Blu-ray is rare and should be more common and seems to be deliberately left off just to force people with Atmos to get the 4K (which they shouldn't need to). I saw *The Hitcher* at the cinema on release; yep I'm that old 🤣 and it holds a special place for me as it was the first time I saw a movie with a non-Hollywood ending which really shocked that 20 year old me and opened me up to a whole new set of possibilities in film. I haven't watched yet but I _think_ *The Telephone* might have been the 'short feature' shown before *The Hitcher* - ah the days of two features in a cinema showing!
I blind bought this. I never got around to seeing it when it came out. But I love a good chunky box set, and all the cool kids were getting it. Plus Rutger Hauer is hot! 😂This is my first Second Sight title.
I got mine about a week ago, direct from Second Sight (I ordered before they had to pull it down). I watched the movie and every special feature, fantastic release from Second Sight as always! They are in the A+ tier with Arrow in my book. FWIW I’d call this a psychological thriller, though it certainly has horror and action elements as well.
This release is so awesome! And the movie is fantastic and looks great! The second sight version was my first time watch. Hauer was amazing. You’re right it’s like Duel and Terminator mashup lol.
Does anyone knows why all those boutique studios never put other language subtitules? Some times I have to choose the regular “non boutique” option from other sellers in order to have Spanish subtitules on the movie
This bothers me too! I love to collect this beautiful editions but it is an experiencie I cannot share with friends and family because english is not their first language.
The 4K of Night of the Demons was at that time the best 4K transfer in my collection. Now I have this, and I'm giddy with anticipation to see something even better. :)
The Hitcher is a fantastic movie, but spending the cash and making the shelf space for that boxset is a big ask. But I’ll be picking up the regular slipcover 4K on day one.
Categorizing The Hitcher as a Thriller is definitely a more accurate genre than Horror. Great mid-80s flick that become more known through vhs rentals and cable after the theatrical run. I can still remember my mom and I renting back then when I was 11. So glad Second Sight sought this out, but I held out for the domestic release as I always try to do to support the labels releases of films here. Prefer the regular case and original cover art too. I sure hope The Fury gets a re-release over here someday soon...
Mine arrived on the 25th saw it yesterday, you can tell in the first 20 mins this transfer is Outstanding, this is my 1st second sight releasr, lets see what they re,lease next, not sure if we needed the screenplay though, think you wasted your money on the blu-ray version, next time have some patience!!! PS I own Thelma & Louise when it came out in January .
Im a bit mixed on the transfer on this. The daytime scenes are stunning but the nighttime scenes particularly the opening of the film is way too dark to the point where you can barely see the faces in some shots. However i do have the 2002 DVD where you can make out those details so it could be just that is what i am used to seeing. Apart from that minor issue i think it looks great.
I just watched it, for the very first time. It is on HBO Max. Freaking loved it and a little baffled how not only I've never seen it but never even heard of it - and i grew up in the 80s. Question, the version on HBO the left and right side of the screen was cropped, can't remember what aspect that's called .. 4:3 mayb? Anyway, does the 4k/Blu Ray have widescreen? Or maybe it is meant to b seen in this ratio?
Dude, I just bought it, although the Standard 4K. Had seen it before though, long time ago. If you haven’t seen it then you are in for something! Holy cow.. The acting is very good. Amazing colors on OLED. If you did see it, hope you liked it!
Ken do you have the second sight blu-ray for Anna and the apocalypse, if not I’d recommend picking it up and reviewing it in December, it’s a Christmas film that’s like la la land meets Shaun of the dead
Cos you are in America, try orbit or Diabolik but you may need a multi region player, plus second sight do not ship to USA . Warner Bros are releasing their version diff artwork but same transfer on Oct 22, get it now, was announced last week.
I've got my boxset, well worth the wait. Watched it and the hitcher has never looked and sounded better on this 4k release, real shame you have ripped your J card, see if you can get a replacement contact second sight or where you bought it from, I would not be happy with that, as we paid a premium price for it.
I'm going to be honest: I only picked this one up because of the fantastic box art and special features (haven't watched them yet, though). Never been a fan of the film itself. I remember it being something of a "video nasty" back in the 80s, and it had a reputation for being one of those films that would mess you up royally if you watched it. But it wasn't. And it isn't. It's just a flawed thriller with a cop-out ending. However, it IS fun to watch Rutger Hauer enjoying himself!
@@SpaceCattttt Don’t completely agree, but I do think it’s a little overhyped for sure. Nothing wrong with buying something for the packaging. This is a safe space for that. Lol
I hate how big the Second Sight limited editions are, two books? the screenplay? heavy bulky, ridiculous! I'll buy the standard, is a shame they don't release a nice slim release like Indicator limited editions.
Might be "night and day" compared to the Umbrella release. Very telling no comparison made with the remastered blu included in the set. Probably because it wouldn't be a night and day difference, thats for sure.
Wasn’t trying to say anything negative about Umbrella. They did a standard Blu-ray release, but the Second Sight version was a 4K scan on the Blu-ray, so it was a better transfer.
@midlevelmedia And I didn't take it that way. Just saying that comparing it to the new remastered bluray is a better indication as to any visible differences (if any) between the 4k and bluray...than comparing a 4k to an old transfer. Any new remaster of a movie on ANY format will be an improvement...making the difference between 4k and BD...negligible, usually. But Second Sight goes above and beyond so I'm sure both disc's look fantastic.
I’m pissed that WB is releasing their own version that’s the same transfer as the Second Sight version. Luckily I only ordered the standard version but yea stop doing this to us collectors.
I have many limited edition releases from Second sight and the transfers are great. But I think these packages are a bit overrated. Booklets/books sometimes have huge fonts and very little text compared to the size, Art cards are nice but pretty boring. J card design is the worst in every release! You should be able to store it inside the package but they are always too big for that. Very underrated label powerhouse indicator does similar cardboard packaging better.
Hard pass on this edition - half the cost is for the book, screenplay and art cards that I have zero interest in. Artwork is not to my liking either. I’ll likely pick up the standard 4k solely for the excellent restoration SS have made.
Nice release. the colors seem to dark compared with the previous BD releases. practically makes you have to decide if you want good image in interiors (previous BD) our outside during the day (4k). btw the 2.0 original audio is not included. also I listened to the commentary of Heller-Nicholas, after her 10min introduction as woke person proceeds to talk about gender-politics, critical-theory, and the sexual gender fan-fiction the movie is (which is denied in the "how these movies are made" video). Is sad to see some literal nobody with a self published book included in this. Total wasted potential of a commentary audio. The fan made audio provided by the projection booth podcast at least includes interviews with Ruger Hauer and Robert Hammond. I was really hyped by this. kinda disappointed by the color grading and Heller's commentary track.
How many before I’m qualified? Can I get a number? A list perhaps. I really want to be qualified by whatever your arbitrary standards for TH-cam movie reviewers might be? 😒
I took a HARD PASS!!! not all BIG BOX SETS. Deserve top dollar, let alone my hard earn money... Plus, it seems on some movies that are really crapy they go all out... And the really great movies get the plan, Jane. Because it sells itself... But I'm happy for you, Minion Buddy, because I know how you like it Big...
Let me update my last comment... I didn't get the big box set because it looked to blan... But I did get the 4k at ORBIT... It's a classic movie that belongs in our collections... But I'm more of a steelbook than a big box... I'd need a 5th room if I started collecting every big box... Hopefully, this gives the love the HITCHER deserves... 😆 🤣 😂
@@Ghostrecon12 Second Sight films should have slim it down like Arrow Video. I am debating on which one to get. I am leaning towards the "Chunky Big Box Set". The regular Slip is a thought though.
That will be my first 4k blu ray to start my collection

The artwork on this set is absolutely gorgeous. I love the colors!

It's good, but it's no Neverending Story. Not much can compete with that release this year.
Second Sight knock every release out of the park!! Man I hope they release The Descent 2005 🤞
@@corporalhicks86 Same here!
I got it as soon as it came out - stunning!
Grindhouse Video has The Hitcher from Second Sight as well.
Second Sight consistently deliver great discs and packaging. My box set has arrived and I could not be happier.
Good review.😊😊
the movie is so much better than I remembered and the SS edition is superior, one of the best of the year without a doubt

I first watched the hitcher on VHS in the 80's , second sight have done a fantastic restoration on this film.
The regular second sight releases I feel need a slipcover to compensate the buyer for not purchasing the limited edition sets.
My J-Card was the same, except it was the same side front corner. I believe it happened during factory packaging.
I blind bought this. I never got around to seeing it when it came out. But I love a good chunky box set, and all the cool kids were getting it. Plus Rutger Hauer is hot! 😂This is my first Second Sight title.
Well this is a hell of a release to jump into the label on! Be careful. Getting bit by the Second Sight bug can become expensive. Lol
Blind buy for me as well, but one of my favorite things to do. Super exciting when blind buy is good or great!
