Don't go small Tom! This is a 30-50 year investment so go big, maybe space it for 24 a side but only put in 16 units to begin with but look 20 years down the road with 2 milkers doing the work.

Have the cows walk straight out of the bails, not turning 90⁰ as soon as they exit.

What a cool look at farm practicality and design! If you and your Dad decide to go with another Parler for farm, definitely go big to accommodate any growth you want to do, but not too big. I'm not keen myself on the completel robotic thing that some farms have done, but I think the way Richard, Josie and Poppy have done it is great! You still get the time with the cows/inspection/etc, but the technology helps

The sisters system looks awesome. I like the computer will know if they haven't moved much or had a calf. I've seen different systems on milking but the sisters version seems to be right up there with the best of them. I'm sure the cows are happy cause the food drops automatically when they empty their bowls. Tom, an awesome video! 👌 A big thank you to the sisters for taking the time to explain things and do a video.

Another fantastic video Tom, for me it would be a parlour over robots every day of the week, just because you see every cow twice a day up close, watching how they are walking in, if they are eating up, seeing if any mastitis and how bad it is among other things, yes robots can detect things but it’s not the same. Used to milk 200 to 250 in a 8/16 herringbone took up to 5 hours depending how many were dry, for me I would go 12/24 or 14/28. I know it all comes down to cost, think how you are now set up the parlour is the better of the two, plus if you put a cafe in and expand to letting visitors in viewing gallery will pull a lot more people in. Can’t wait to hear what system your going to go with.

I used to milk 300 in 20/40 dairymaster no acrs no feeding. We had out of parlour feeders which we programmed to be off for an hour before milking and come on when we started. This way the cows came in and out in their own. Cleaner parlour as no food or feeders. 1 Milker 10300 average. 160/hr winter 200/hr summer. I’m a foottrimmer now. But always watch your videos ( hoof gp featured me on the rollover last year)

Your biggest attribute is what a great cow man (stockman) you are Tom!
Get a bigger parlour and stay hands on with your cows mate robots aren't the same as good as they are!
I know your busy with other stuff and get milkers in so maybe robots would make sense.
But I'm sure you'd do it yourself if you could milk 50 even 60 in one go and your laughing

One thing every dairy farmer says about its a must in a new parlour is an adjustable floor to adjust it to your height. It really helps them with back Problems because anyone milking can adjust it to the perfect height even if the person milking in the morning is like 6 foot 9 and the one in the afternoon is only 5 foot 4.
Anyway, nice video with 2 very nice girls loving farming and cows as much as you do!😊

  • @TheMathedis

    Hi Tom,
Considering for the time of the investition; size your parlor for where you want your herd to be in 10 or 20 years plus a bit of margin. sizing it for the actual herd would be a miss.
And the collars, just go for it. you could even add a weighting system in the gate system if it makes sens for you. you like working with the data and have an evidence based approach, so go for it it will help you.

Really enjoyed that video. Thanks to the girls and Richard for allowing us to see their great setup. So the question is when are you putting one in? When I've watched your milking vids they've blown my mind with what you put up with and the time it takes. We milk in a 24a/s with one person and have only recently put in acr's. Little over an hr milking 9 rows, no worries. But that's NZ for ya. Consider auto teat spray as well, one less job. The other thing I notice comparing uk to nz, is you are trying to graze outside more, and we are trying to have more infrastructure to get them inside a bit. I guess the ideal is a happy medium, best of both worlds. Have a great Xmas in the UK, don't work to hard 👍

would be interesting to see the pros and cons of parlor ,vs robots. Maybe on the chalk board or spread sheet. A lot to consider. One thing with the parlour (not that I know anything) you see how every cow is walking. The collars sound amazing for all they can do.Both will need room for herd getting larger. This decision could keep you awake at night. Find these videos fascinating. thanks for taking the time, your sense of humour and attention to details.

Hi Tom, I have been watching your vids for some time. I am a Dutch diary farmere's son and since you are looking to upgrade your parlour, I am pleased to see you are checking out other people's dairy set ups. I would urge you to make time to visit The Netherlands and check out what is going on there. Obviously many a milking robot has been developed there, but equally diary tech at the 'manual' level has also carried on developing. I cannot simply translate what is said in the attached video, but just having a look may spark your interest in looking into it more. Many dairy farmers in Holland decided not to invest in robots but have adopted the 'pop up' cluster system which is not really a cluster but a system that pops up out of the floor. Have a look and see here: th-cam.com/video/Ck7R883XzsA/w-d-xo.html

Nice video Tom, we milk about 7 years in a 14 unit delaval. My advice is, the better the cow flow the larger parlour you can go. We milk about 80-100 cows an hour with one person. Some other farmers who looked here always build there parlour 2, 4 or 6 stalls bigger. If i would do it again i would go for double 16 with one man. Good luck with the future plans!

  • @roberthiggins6401
    @roberthiggins6401 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That is a beautiful set they have. I can see you going for a very similar system as I know you like to be around your cows and you like milking. As you said you'd probably go for less per side but I guess that depends on how many more cows you intend milking and that comes down to land.
    Really light bright and airy.
Richard would be a great man to help you design yours when you come to it for his experience.
I don't think you'll go for robots personally as you love that part of the job but I could be wrong?
    Good luck Tom.
Does Richard have a farm shop and fatten the bull calves? Out off interest.

Our old milk house would only milk 2 cows to a side. We could milk 4 at a time but it was one side and then the other. We would put the milkers on one side then get the other side ready and put the milkers on them, then take the milkers off the other side and let more cows in. We milked around an average of 125 cows. It took us 9 hours to milk every day. It was very hard to plant and harvest the crops and do everything else that needed to be done. It was just my dad and two early teen sons.

My previous employer, I've had to pack in as a dairy manager now, hip, knee probs, insisted we replaced the old 18/18 fullwood parlour with a fullwood 24/48 same size as the girls is there. No mod cons, no auto milk recording, just heat time collars and seg gates, but....just 1 man milking...and I frigging hated it. It's not a 1 man parlour, 1 man can only milk so many cows an hour, 80ish I believe. So don't go too big unless you're prepared for 2 milkers, or you try 1 and get a v v frustrated, stressed herdsman and poor mastitis control etc. I really hated the 24/48!!!!

If i was you only 12 a side keep it simple specially if i's only one person go bigger means more people. You're only problem is room/spcae but if you take out the milk vats and re-arrange it all you could work it all. But great thing about you tube so many videos of different parlours. I can't remember the one i like but pearson milking technology have a few videos of designs you might like aswell and yard ideas too. If you think 24 big try 5100 cows 2 parlours its in canada if you want a field trip. But love the ideas this family have simple but works.

Great video…. My old days of milking we’re the same as Tom P., Hours open hours of the year spent in the parlour. A good parlour is the greatest time saver of all for a dairy farmer.

Would have liked to know how big of footprint the parlour RHD run in & the clamps needed & 200 head, are they grazing off 200 acres or more, as they must be out 200 days per year if the need 2 acres per day that’s 400 acres, the parlour must surely be sat central or it be a long walk every day to get milked

We have a 40/40 westfalia, auto ID, acr, auto footbath, auto movement gate, auto shedder, got auto scrapers, automatic poo seperater, solids go into a yard, slurry goes into a pit. Milk 450 cows daily, 300 3 times a day and 450 2 times a day.

Hi Tom, I'm not a farmer, but this parlour is a must have in my view, the time saved, the welfare of the cows and person(s) doing the milking, add to that the electricity saved it seems a no brainier to me, of course the cost of such a parlour must be huge though... Love the video's learning a lot about the complexity of being a farmer... All the best. Peter

Lol to you 16 is abit much for 1 person. I milk 300+ on a 25/50 waikato parlour on my own and atm we are breeding got so got to manually pull cows out with the seg gate. Cause the auto seg was rubbish so we stopped using It. You need to look at the waikato stuff to. I know I. Late to watch this vid

16/32 would be fine for one man, I used to milk in one and it was really quick and easy could happily do 190 an hour on my own, if you do decide to go for a new parlour just go slightly bigger then you think I’d say

Great video again Tom. We have installed several high pressure hot water systems in parlours/dairies. Would be a pleasure to work with you if you go down that route.

We have a 14 unit with ACRs and a dump line and we can milk 90 cows an hour through it so a 14 or 16 would be plenty big for your operation and I wouldn’t even dream of robots on a grass based system

Yup you definitely need a new parlour Tom. I think this is the style you prefer keeping the hands-on approach with a little computer assist. Can't see you going for robots, you love your cows too much.

Tom, that was one of the best videos you've posted in a long time. I appreciate your interest and humility in pursuing how your colleagues do what they do, with a nod toward improving your own productivity and profitability. Best wishes as you and your dad continue to enhance and grow your operation!

This is so amazing. I grew up on a dairy farm. At first we milked the cows by hand then we could milk one cow at a time with our first machine. When we sold we chad a milking parlor that we could milk six cows at a time plus automatic feeders.we were in the barn for hours a day. Wow what we would have given for this setup. By the way I am almost 80 and a women. Thank you so much for thus video.
