I really wanted to try rabbit so i went to Wegmans market and picked up a whole one. I'm pretty familiar with cutting up turkey, pork and chicken, so i pulled up a few videos for some tips... this video, by far is the best one for demonstrating how to butcher a dressed rabbit. Thanks so much for posting!!!
Thanks for posting thesevideos! With all the extreemists out there this takes courage. It sure looks like you take good care of your animals, as well as your family. By doing this you are really helping out the community! Blessings to you and yours!
If you want to cry about butchering and eating animals for educational and survival purposes then look up on TH-cam (baby chick being swallowed alive by snake), that is the place where you can complain and cry and meet other whiners cause it was torture.. Leave this gentlemen alone cause if it were you being stuck and stranded somewhere and rabbit was the only thing around to eat you would thank this guy for teaching you how to clean and quarter a rabbit.. He might not be an angel but he spent his time (which he didn't have to) teaching you how to do something useful if it came down to it...
this was really informational! I for one have not even tasted rabbit before but I'm learning how to disjoint a whole rabbit tomorrow in culinary school and I didn't want to go into it with an empty mind, so thank god I found this video! Thanks again!
Spine consists of the spinous process and the two transverse processes. (In very basic terms). All animals have it, but I'm glad someone finally addressed this topic when butchering, because I think some people may believe the spine is really simple. Ok, I'm done being an anatomy nerd. Good video!
When, oh when will I finally learn to check TH-cam first before I do things. This is so much clearer than the written description I was trying to follow the other night.
Since eating rabbit is not very popular in South Africa, we tried cooking it for the first time but did not know how to quarter it. Thanks for this video, it was super helpful.
Thank you, Kain: Many videos on how to butcher a rabbit only shows us how to kill, skin, and gut a rabbit. But this is one of only very few that gets u into how to debone it for the freezer. Thanks very much. This is a very good butchering video.
Awesome videos mate we need another update with the animals!! a tip I have is put some wet paper towel on the table and then the chopping board on top of that will make it not spin around as much. Please make more vids!
thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! Ive got 6 New Zealand rabbits ready for slaughter, and this covered everything i needed to know. when i slaughter chickens, im used to using a disposable scalpel, but i'm going to give the scissor method a try too. one more thing, i was delighted to see that you used such a quick, and efficient kill method. i will most likely be using a .22lr pistol and silencer on mine.
Just butchered my first 3 today, going by this video. It was pretty straight forward, and rather easy. Thanks for the tutorial. Now, just to eat it. I have it freezing right now though.
There were these guys living in a cabin in the woods who did nothing but trap wild rabbits for their fur. They ate nothing but rabbit meat, but they still died of starvation because while rabbit meat is rich in protein it's devoid of anything else. So if you find yourself eating nothing but rabbit make sure to get your veggies in or you'll starve.
Great video, My family and I just recently started raising rabbits, 3 does 1 male Rex breed. Had the first litter about 3 weeks ago, had 10 but lost 1, Their all doing great. How soon can they be seperated from mother? at what age do you butcher?
@RabbitsNWatermelons I did not notice a difference in flavor but I marinate them in most of my recipes. They are definitely a little smaller and less fatty though.
thank you so much for showing how to do this. there are so many videos showing the gutting but none showing the butchering. I am new to this and have never done it before but hunting season is starting soon and plan on giving it a try. have you done squirrel before or any other small game? I have herd that most small game is the same for gutting and butchering, is this true? again thank you very much for your videos.
Ok, i understand. Thats nice and delicious eggs from own henns!! How much you have, and how long will they laying, before they get problemes to lay eggs?
@JRSKICK1 I didnt weigh them but they looked the same to me. There was just a little less fat on the grass fed one. The six I have in my rabbit tractor are growing but dont seem to as meaty as I would like so I am now adding food to see where they start filling out.
im with you girl! i only have show rabbits at the moment, but i wouldnt mind raising my own meat. if only everyone would remember what our ancestors had to do to eat in the depression!
there is a video called - "de-boning a rabbit" that shows a great way to get a great percentage of the meat. i think you would like this! they speak Spanish but you dont need to listen to understand. I just started watching your vids and subscribed right away! all the info with none of the creepy-ness like most of the other people that raise rabbits. thanks for the vids, i am probably going to start raising rabbits myself, and these have been VERY helpful!
I have always loved hunting rabbit but now because of you I raise them. I think they taste much better than wild ones. I have found one problem though. I have trouble dispatching them. I know that sounds silly because it doesn't bother me to hunt them. lol Thank you for you videos.
just watched a 5 1/2 minute spanish language video about deboning a rabbit. posted by tulowulo. he pulled all of the bones out leaving the carcass intact so that it could be rolled stuffed and tied like a roast. looked like an interesting alternative to pan frying or grilling.
Do you age the meat in the fridge or just freeze or eat right away? Also do you find that BBQing the meat dries it out? Awesome video. Keep up the rabbit vids.
just butchered my first rabbit after watching this video. very similar to a chicken except the lion obviously. but your instructions were great. how many pounds was that rabbit? mine was two pounds but looked not nearly as big as yours. thanks
@Den0Q Yep dispatching your own meat you raised is a lot more personal than even hunting. Its not silly at all. Its shows you have respect for the life of the rabbit. Most people buy their meat from the store and dont care how it was raised or killed or even that it was alive at all.
Depends what you like 10-13 weeks is ideal. I usually go 11-12 weeks. Sometimes I go earlier if I need the meat for dinner or a party or something then I will just butcher the whole litter early. It takesw me about an hour to butcher 2 good sized litters.
@KainanRa We are having issues with this as well. my family refuses to eat any of them. So for now we are selling the babies at auction. The few that have died have done so on their own. We will not eat that meat as I still do not know what killed them. But I did keep the furs from them and practiced cutting them up.
This has only been documented in one case and it was found that the rabbits in the area were very malnourished. Starving people eating starving rabbits = little nutrition.
Telamon: YUMMY...... FRIED CHICKEN.... Me: It's not fried chicken. Telamon: THEN WHAT IS IT!?!?! IF IT LOOKS LIKE IT IT'S FRIED CHICKEN!!!!!!! Me: It's rabbit meat. Telamon: ..... Telamon has left the game.
I've never tasted domestic rabbit before... I was a little surprised at you're removing the fat since I'd never seen much fat on 'em, except for what comes off with the skin. Do they taste any different from the wild rabbits?
Alright so I lack the oportunity to raise my own rabbits but we have a store here that sellls rabbit meat from china. The meat still has to be quartered so this video was very helpful! I wanted to ask though, is it normal for rabbit meat to have an odor to it? I find it very unpleasant. It doesn't smell so much like rotten meat, but it does smell like the rabbit was dead for a few hours before being chilled. I've never noticed this scent on other store bought meats. In fact, beef, chicken, and turkey have always had a fresh appetizing scent to me. It is just 'cause I'm buying meat from the store?
Excellent Job! I sometimes tend to be lazy and do a quick job.... although I let nothing goes to waste... I put anything left on the bones in a pot and boil the meat off for "Rabbit-n-Rice". Umm Umm Good!

I had no idea there was that much meat on one rabbit.
Awesome video! I'm just starting out in raising meat rabbits and this video answered a thousand questions! Thank you for making this!

Best rabbit video I've seen yet. Thanks for doing this!
this was really informational! I for one have not even tasted rabbit before but I'm learning how to disjoint a whole rabbit tomorrow in culinary school and I didn't want to go into it with an empty mind, so thank god I found this video! Thanks again!

That was the best. Mine come out looking like ground turkey. You made it look simple and easy, going to watch again! Thanks
Since eating rabbit is not very popular in South Africa, we tried cooking it for the first time but did not know how to quarter it. Thanks for this video, it was super helpful.
very helpful glad you posted this ......now i can stock my freezer lots of rabbit here
You make it look so easy. Some of us are a little more remedial. Glad you have this up for reference.
Thank you, Kain: Many videos on how to butcher a rabbit only shows us how to kill, skin, and gut a rabbit. But this is one of only very few that gets u into how to debone it for the freezer. Thanks very much. This is a very good butchering video.
Thanks for the demo! It's been years since I've had to clean rabbit. the hubby don't hunt much any more and we can't have bunnies right now.
Thanks for putting out this great video. Very helpful and just a good clean way of butchering. Helped me out.
Awesome videos mate we need another update with the animals!! a tip I have is put some wet paper towel on the table and then the chopping board on top of that will make it not spin around as much. Please make more vids!
Thanks for putting out this video. Best one I've seen for rabbit quartering.
you got me rethinking about rabbits
thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! Ive got 6 New Zealand rabbits ready for slaughter, and this covered everything i needed to know.

Jesus why use a silencer? Blast that thing to kingdom come!!
Just butchered my first 3 today, going by this video. It was pretty straight forward, and rather easy. Thanks for the tutorial. Now, just to eat it. I have it freezing right now though.

Great Video. I'm getting two 10 lb rabbits from a friend tonight, so I'm going to try this out! Thanks!
Actually they're italian but I agree, its incredible how much meat is saved, it'd be amazing if I could get that good haha
Great videos, thanks for posting them!
That was the best video regarding rabbits I've ever seen, so detailed and organised. Do you keep the furs and tan them or just throw them out?
Great video, My family and I just recently started raising rabbits, 3 does 1 male Rex breed. Had the first litter about 3 weeks ago, had 10 but lost 1, Their all doing great. How soon can they be seperated from mother? at what age do you butcher?
That picture of the rabbit on the grill looked wonderful. How do you season it?
Great series of videos. Have you ever used the "squeeze-gutting" method for cleaning the entrails? Curious to see how well it works before trying it.
hey nice video thanks for posting i wonder how many rabbits that you raise and harvest in a year do you eat them regulary like daily??
@RabbitsNWatermelons I did not notice a difference in flavor but I marinate them in most of my recipes. They are definitely a little smaller and less fatty though.

Very thorough and informative. Thanks man!
Thanks for the great video, very informative! I really like your technique!
would of liked it twice if i could. nice job, what type of breeds would
you recommend ?
Ok, i understand. Thats nice and delicious eggs from own henns!! How much you have, and how long will they laying, before they get problemes to lay eggs?
Thanks. I'm planning on bbq'n a rabbit next week and this was really helpful!
@LowBuckPrepper No Problem glad you liked it. Remember though its just the way i do it and there may be better ways.
@JRSKICK1 I didnt weigh them but they looked the same to me. There was just a little less fat on the grass fed one. The six I have in my rabbit tractor are growing but dont seem to as meaty as I would like so I am now adding food to see where they start filling out.
Is rabbit tender when prepared on the grill? Looks delicious. I'm thinking about making a stew or something with rabbit very soon.
im with you girl! i only have show rabbits at the moment, but i wouldnt mind raising my own meat. if only everyone would remember what our ancestors had to do to eat in the depression!

Just learned something new, we JUST started raising rabbits to eat and I am new at butchering so this video I can reference off of, mahalo!
Good Video, Do all rabbits types taste the same? I understand that diet will play a roll as well.
Would you advise making a stew, or a stock with the rest of the spine?
just watched a 5 1/2 minute spanish language video about deboning a rabbit. posted by tulowulo. he pulled all of the bones out leaving the carcass intact so that it could be rolled stuffed and tied like a roast. looked like an interesting alternative to pan frying or grilling.
@CodyJames005 Thanks I have seen that video but I have not tried it yet. Glad you like the channel. Thanks for watching
"Looks like a large frog"
Well they do both hop :P
Nice tips, thanks :D
thanks for this i just butchered my first bunny and i would have been lost without this!
I have a question was the free range rabbit gamey or was there a difference.
Do you age the meat in the fridge or just freeze or eat right away? Also do you find that BBQing the meat dries it out? Awesome video. Keep up the rabbit vids.
@schwarzehexebruja Awesome. Im glad to see sooo many people starting rabbits.
You said you don't eat the 'stomach' muscles/flaps, is there a reason why?
oh those belly flaps you use to get the silver skin off with make some pretty good rabbit jerky
@LowBuckPrepper Thats awesome cant wait to see the setup.
How did you get started with this? So cool. How do you butcher
just butchered my first rabbit after watching this video. very similar to a chicken except the lion obviously. but your instructions were great. how many pounds was that rabbit? mine was two pounds but looked not nearly as big as yours. thanks
they say that stomach skin is like bacon
Rabbit shows, you can find a variety of brood/pet rabbits and you would know what breed your getting. Also places like craigslist might work.
@JENS60 I think it was around 6 lbs live weight.
What seasoning do you use? Cause that looks awesome
How much did the rabbit weigh before butchering? and how much meat did you get from it? What kind of rabbits were they?
Thanks for the very clear instructional video. Well done.
could you use a smoker to coo the ribs on the rabbit or will it make it too dry
Thank you. That was informative and concise.
@Den0Q Yep dispatching your own meat you raised is a lot more personal than even hunting. Its not silly at all. Its shows you have respect for the life of the rabbit. Most people buy their meat from the store and dont care how it was raised or killed or even that it was alive at all.
Great demonstration there. Loving the videos. Can't stand the backbone of them rabbits. Pain in the butt to clean! Keep up the great work!
Depends what you like 10-13 weeks is ideal. I usually go 11-12 weeks. Sometimes I go earlier if I need the meat for dinner or a party or something then I will just butcher the whole litter early. It takesw me about an hour to butcher 2 good sized litters.
@mrwiggles2 Yep. As long as it is cooked right it can stay tender.
Do all rabbits taste the same? I understand diet has a play in it. Good Video.
@youngstunner96 Im not sure. I would probably just set at choke points and not worry about bait. If I did use bait maybe some apples.
@karl9x Thats the part we eat the rest gets trimmed up for the dogs. Very little is wasted.
@KainanRa We are having issues with this as well. my family refuses to eat any of them. So for now we are selling the babies at auction. The few that have died have done so on their own. We will not eat that meat as I still do not know what killed them. But I did keep the furs from them and practiced cutting them up.
How did you get the seeds from the radishes?
What if you can't get all the silver skin off? Will it make the meat taste bad?
Thank you, for your time, this will help me out a lot.
This has only been documented in one case and it was found that the rabbits in the area were very malnourished. Starving people eating starving rabbits = little nutrition.
Some people call it the back saddle and I have heard some call it the back strap.
Nice video! I liked both of them and learned alot i feel confident That i can do the same now Thank You!!
@JENS60 No I do not normally weight them. Yes this was the brown rabbit from the earlier video.
You have a reason Why you dont have a rooster? How long or what time your henns maximum laying eggs?
if i give rabbit meat to my dog, like the head, spins and any other scraps should i just give them it raw as soon as ive cut it?
Nice! Thx for the video, I will be processing some of my meat rabbits next weekend and will surely use this video for reference. Thx!
@ptpetroc Awesome glad you found it useful. Cool that you could buy some rabbit at the market.
@cianw10 I dont give them the bones. Just the raw meat scraps. Dogs can eat raw meat just fine.
how many oz of meat did you get all together?
Do you give your dogs the pieces all raw ? Are they on a dry food diet ?
@joeytrahan That one was almost 16 weeks. I had been trying to sell them or I would normally butcher around 12 weeks.
@KainanRa
how many times a month do you eat rabbit?
I've never tasted domestic rabbit before... I was a little surprised at you're removing the fat since I'd never seen much fat on 'em, except for what comes off with the skin. Do they taste any different from the wild rabbits?
You never weight a rabbit before slaughter? Was it one of the rabbits you showed on the video in the beginning of this week?
I watched your vid on the sparrow trap, liked it but lost it> I was going to sub, But subbed today... GREAT STUFF ! ! !
What breed of rabbits do you prefer for meat?
Alright so I lack the oportunity to raise my own rabbits but we have a store here that sellls rabbit meat from china. The meat still has to be quartered so this video was very helpful! I wanted to ask though, is it normal for rabbit meat to have an odor to it? I find it very unpleasant. @chuffness Raw and they do get dry food but not exclusively.
Excellent Job! I sometimes tend to be lazy and do a quick job.... although I let nothing goes to waste... I put anything left on the bones in a pot and boil the meat off for "Rabbit-n-Rice". Umm Umm Good!
@TheWildNorth No we have it about once a week. The rest I sell or give away.
do you do any feild hunting if so i would love vid on that and then you could do a feild butcher maybe
