First off I want to say thank you for this video, very easy to follow. I followed your instructions but my hair is falling out something fierce, we had a long rainy period while I did the salt process which took 2 weeks to get it dried out. Then I scraped and washed off the salt. I have no membrane or fat on my pelt. I egg yoked for 48 hours. Today I washed it and set it out to dry. Clumps are falling out. Is it bacteria or something else?

It's because your hide started to decompose. As the fibers break down they loosen and release the hair follicles. May have no salted enough?

I need some help. After I washed the hide after soaking in the egg yolks I stretched them and all was going well. Over the next few hours I stretch them a couple more times. I was really happy with how soft and pliable they were but then I got busy and when I came back a couple hours later they're stiffer and more crackly like paper.😞
I did not apply any of the mink oil because I was planning on smoking the hides. Is it not possible for them to stay soft and pliable without the oil at all? Or is there something else that I did wrong? What should I do from this point to make them softer again?
    I really appreciate any help!

Got a question for you that's not related to this video, this just happens to be the one I'm watching. Hope that's okay. Wanted to know how you handle your water system in the winter? I've always had to pull the bottles in the winter because of freezing, but when I use bowls all they do is dump the bowls and are constantly without water.

    • @GoodSimpleLiving
      @GoodSimpleLiving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

We use the bottles in winter, and rotate them out in the morning and in the evening. So basically I have 2 for each hutch.... total pain. Winters are mild here though so it's not to many days we have to do that. We will be tweeking this when we move to Idaho.

It was a huge pain last winter, I was using the glass bottles and they kept breaking when they froze. That's why I switched to using bowls for the rest of the winter. TANNING is the preservation method, not salting. Salting is only necessary (to help in removing moisture from the hide quickly in damp environments) if you are going to tan the hides later (when you have enough to do a large batch all at once) and you have no means of freezing the hides... even then ONLY in areas with high humidity such as the southeast USA (aka- hillbilly/swamp rat country). In the southwest/desert, it is not necessary at all. Salting is generally a waste of time/energy/money/materials...

    • Does it have to be chicken eggs or can you use duck eggs?
    • Can you use natural soaps like liquid Castile?
    • Can you use a wringer (like an old fashioned wringer washer) to get the excess water out?
    • How do you clean them? Like if you turn them into a pillow or throw, because I'm guessing that you can't put them in the washer.

Yes you can use duck eggs, natural soap, and a wringer :) you can also throw them in the washer before you stretch, but not afterwards.you really shouldnt wash any furs after that process, but if you want a fur that can get wet you will need to smoke them after this process.

Hey! I have a quick question; when you condition the hide, do you *have* to use mink oil or can any conditioning oil work? I just started my process to tan, so I have a few days before I am at that step. I just wanted to clarify. I've never used mink oil, and I was thinking about some other oils we could use. I'm not totally sure if I can even find mink oil in my area. I might have to Amazon that bad boy.
And secondly, the whole egg thing... hilarious!

You have a beautiful family, and thanks for saving the rabbit hides. I worked for two years I guess from 1978 to 1980 maybe 80 to 82 some where there about. A company called Dakota Fur and Metal. The winter time work was all hides, Coyote, Badger, Fox, Racoon, Muskrat, Beaver and in the summer time we would take in cow hides. The cow hides would be stacked in a tin shed all hair side down layered all over the floor and I would have to cut off tails and any excess fat then salt them come fall time they would be rolled up hair side out and wait for freezing conditions and then sold (the hair side in this case was not important.). North Dakota where I live freezes almost every night starting end of Oct. But for the other hides they had a fleshing pole that and a knife that looked like a backwards draw knife. The fleshing pole was a pole about the size of a telephone pole not that long but that diameter and one end was on the floor and the other end was raised like you had it propped up on a saw horse, and the business end was shaped like and anvil round end only larger, you would slip you hides on that. They had boards actually coon brds, coyote brds etc for each animal these board kind of looked like small Ironing brds. The company also had a person to sew up the hides that had any fleshing mishaps. When done drying and I don't remember how long that took although I thing overnight, they would be turned inside out noses where the hardest and the starting point, the they had a big tumbler made out of lumber, it was about 8 feet in diameter and about 2-1/2 feet wide and had sawdust inside it and they would throw stanisole in there and the hides would come out of there looking like well........... great. really nice I always thought the Badger looked the nicest. But I being color blind I suppose its not the best.
    Take care
    Me

Thank you so much for making these videos! I started raising meat rabbits because of your videos and it's going really well. I just dispatched and butchered my first rabbit last Sunday and we had rabbit stew on Tuesday! You have been an absolute and complete resource and I'm so grateful for your willingness to teach how to do all of this. With that said, I have a question. I used this method for tanning the hide and it never got dry. Even after the salt sat on it for 2 days it was still kinda moist. I put the eggs yolks on for 2 days after fleshing and used the damp towel. The hide never got dry and has stayed completely white. It's from a white rabbit. I'm afraid that it may have been wasted, or that it will just fall apart. Any advice? Should I salt and egg it again? Thanks so much for taking the time to read this!
