  • Almost done! Next video it'll be running. Carbs (again), checking the cylinders with a Borescope, looking at the inside of the fuel tank, and other fun stuff!

    I really enjoyed all Valkyrie videos. I inherited a 1997 Valkyrie tourer. It needed a six pack rebuild. Your videos made it easy. Thanks!

    I'm feeling lucky I found an '03 back in April that was meticously maintained with only 9600 miles. We've ran a quick 4700 miles this season. Great bikes and thank you for sharing your knowledge. Safe Riding to you and all also, Wiley Tom.

      Thanks for watching. Maintenance is fine, is great, etc. However, AGE is what gets carb components when it's not left sitting to rot away. Well, Age AND ethanol fuel. Eventually, all the carb rubber parts will start to fail in one way or another. The guy who puts these kits together is currently getting some ready to put on his website, apparently I must have bought one of the last ones he had assembled. I'm going to purchase two and keep one in stock. Cheers.

    Another thing I do usually do when I get a bike that has been sitting for a while. In order to de-gunk rings and remove any rust from cylinders, on the spark plug holes squirt down and let sitting for a day or 2 some Marvel oil and sometimes some Seafoam. Then suck it out with a syringe. I also use a borescope camera to check everything before start in the bike for the first time. Great job you do, amazing and thank you. Cannot get better than this, for me is 10x better than Netflix.....lol

    Excellent info. Curious where you obtained the new bearings for the linkage between the carbs? You mentioned he.

      Rich from Red Eye Technical used to include them in his full kits when he made the kits. He no longer does and I do not currently have a source for them.

    For the leaking float valve next time try using some toothpaste and work around with little pressure between your fingers and you will see that the toothpaste works as very fine sanding. Also, you can just rub the rest of the toothpaste in your jewelry or metal watch and you will amazed how shiny and clean the paste leave them. This trick worked for me with the same leaking float valve issue. Thank you Red

      Also, I am using that polishing trick of the float valve every time I rebuild a set of carbs from a bike that has been sitting for a long time just as a preventive step and it always works. An no more ethanol gas for me, Wawa gas in all my carbureted bikes.

      That's an old-school restoration trick, also. Back in the very early 80's I had a Chrysler 300 and once of the restoration tricks in the literature back than (magazines, no internet) was using toothpaste to polish plastic like tail light lenses. I remember trying it back then and it worked. As you also noted, I use Brasso for the float seats. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    A funny memory now that I see you have a Concuors, I had 2 of them, beautiful bikes but too hot for Miami. Any ways, the 2003 had 3000 and looked brand new and one day I just tuned it on and hydrolocked on me....I could not believe it.... I guess the petcock failed or a float bowl got stocked....I had to replace the engine since I found a donor and I did not wanted to deal with the engine work. But what a memory my friend.....

      That's the one thing I hammer customers on, is fuel delivery in carbureted units. Bikes, whatever, if the thing fails, it'll flood the engine period, unless the carb has a built-in overflow system. If you watch the ATV Float Bowl video I just put up, I repair one of those tubes. Indeed, the Concours 1000 or C10, has no overflow tubes. But... at the bottom of the carb bowls, there is a spot for them. It's a very popular modification to un-rack the carbs, pop off the bowls and insert a fuel overflow tube as I did in this video I mentioned about the ATV. It's hard to get their heads wrapped around it. Nowadays, I hardly ever try to rebuild a fuel cock. It's almost always replaced with brand new, and OEM, not Chinesium crap.     Hi from one of the your 2 and half watchers Thinking bout doing what you're doing. Have extensive experience working on bikes,have worked in shops,and thinking bout opening my own. Does it pay the bills? Have penciled it out and looks good on paper but how's it in the real world? Thanks enjoy watching your vids, entertaining and informative

      Thanks for watching. The answer is maybe. Depends upon what you’re taking in. I have to flat rate a lot of work on this old or really cruddy stuff because hour for hour billing would exceed the value of the machine. In the rare circumstances you get a person willing to spend whatever it takes for say a restoration, perhaps. You’d have to focus upon newer stuff not as junky and have steady volume. Plus you’ll need commercial parts discounts. Again thanks for watching.

    "This was a difficult one"...I want to avoid most of what you've done. 1998 F6C sitting for 2 years. Runs when sprayed. Surely the slow idel jets as well as other things are gummed up a bit. Had been running it. Do you know how to clean the carbs...flood upward from drain holes... or any other way to soak/clean the carb internals WITHOUT removing the rack? Tks

      Do you mean removing if from the bike or disassemble it to bits? I am assuming you mean without having to remove the entire rack assembly from the bike. Short answer is no. Whether there’s six or four carbs, these are particularly finicky to everything working properly. Assuming they have the same air cut valves on each carb, they have to be disassembled, tested and o rings replaced. The entire fuel and air circuits for the jets need to be cleared. The simplest operation would be pulling the rack, draining, turn upside down and remove the float bowls, remove the jets and clean, probably replacing them is easiest, put new float valves in, reset the float levels, out new bowl gaskets and reassemble. There’s a lot to these carbs which is why they are expensive to fix. I’d charge $1500 and up for a complete carb rebuild on a bike like this. This job in the videos was over $2,200 due to all the other work and parts. But good luck getting a Honda dealer to do it. If you’re close, reach out and schedule it in and I’ll take care of it.     How did it get the sixth gear? My two Valkyries are both 5 speed

      I said 5th gear. That’s top gear as you suggested.

      OK I see what you mean. Yea, when I was shifting it up I must have double counted a gear. Earlier in the video, I did say 5-speed as well. Oh well, you get the picture. Cheers.

    How much for you to do a carb rebuild for one of these? Mine are clean (the bike runs) but I don’t think I went into enough detail (bike doesn’t run great) - as you do in this project. I can get them off the bike and mail them to you

      Hello. I could only quote labor at this time, because if it needed a full rebuild, the place I get the full kits from currently does not show any in stock. I have reached out to him to ask if he's even putting them together anymore. Just because they're clean doesn't mean they don't need soft parts replaced like O-Rings, gaskets, etc. So labor on a full rack that I don't have to pull out and reinstall would be in the range of $200 to $350 unless something is really bad like a cracked carb body or something; this is only if everything else is nominal.
