  • Setting up an external CD drive on a Compaq Presario 425! Since this PC only has two already-filled ISA slots and nowhere for an internal optical drive, Backpack setups were great. Now to repair it...

Strange how TH-cam does that to a person. I watch bigclivedotcom even though I haven't a clue about what the hell he's talking about. And I watch Simone Giertz even though I don't have much interest in robots (though, in her case, I know it's because I've got a crush on her!)

There's something about these old all in one computers that I've always loved. I've actually owned two of the later case designs of this Compaq but sadly had to sell them awhile back. I miss both of them. Such great aesthetics and love that you can just plop them anywhere, hook up a keyboard and mouse, and you're ready to go. My dream all in one is the Packard Bell Spectria, yes, an all in one Packard Bell. Too bad they're ridiculously hard to find, even harder to find than the corner design.

your channel has reinvigorated such a spark in me. I too worked in my high school as a pc tech while attending, and was employed by them after graduating for a while too - which lead me to various pc tech roles at the apple factory, bestbuy/geeksquad, and circuit city's firedog as a trainer and supervisor of techs; until i decided to change careers and go into graphic design - i've since become 'a mac person' but still remember every DOS command, every virus fix (xp's sasser worm anybody?) etc. and just spent the day troubleshooting my friends' PC rebuilding projects; we built a home theater PC to be a PLEX and Steam client; a gaming rig with all fresh parts, and the leftovers into an extra PC; doing the old gambit of windows updates, driver installs, browser installs, and classic utilities everyone needs; sigh - macs have spoiled me. lol. felt good to get back into it. watching this was the icing on the cake today. Thanks so much!!!! #respect

Thanks for that flashback. I worked for Micro Solutions from 97ish to when they closed as technical support. It was a great company and I remember the old cdrom drive you had in its prime. They also had tape drives, hard drives, PD drives (that tech didn't last long), cdrw drives, and at the end also did a NAS box and fingerprint locked hard drive. It was a great company to work for where the tech, sales, owners, engineers all knew each other and were a tight group. Good to see a few products still exist. LoL

The first home computer we had was an Compaq Presario, a newer type than this, with speakers too, they were under the corners of the screen, and Windows 3.11.
Too bad it has been thrown away, it was super expensive when new too... I miss using DOS and trying to get games working with too little RAM and Hard Drive space, I played DOOM, Hexen and WarCraft 2 into the 2000`s on that one. A time when you finally got the game running, you actually deserved to play it, and that was an achivement in itself.

Yep. The first CD-ROM drive I used (in around '93 I think) was a single-speed parallel-port interface. Horribly slow, but back then it was amazing! You could get shareware CD's at the time (before everyone had the internet), and that provided hours of fun looking through all the software.
Also, in college I had that exact ZIP drive, parallel port.. Sooo sloooowww, but I loved it!

I had a Backpack parallel port CD-R drive back in the day. Used it with my PII 400 Compaq Presario desktop in college. As it was pretty much impossible to use the PC when trying to burn a disc, I would always start the process before I left for class, all the while praying the job would complete successfully while I was away. Most of the time it worked fine, but when it didn't, it was always frustrating because errors with the CD disc or software often took the whole computer down, costing me time and wasting the media, which wasn't exactly cheap back then.

  • @mihoshiproductions9809

Never thought I'd ever see one of those backpack CD-Rom drives again. But should have known if any channel would show one it would be yours. LOL. I had one of those given to me, but never used it. The AC adapter was the most interesting part aside from the sound card upgrade port.

On my Presario 425 I had as a kid I installed a soundblaster and spliced the power to the hdd. That got routed through the second isa (pci?? I can't remember) slot along with the ide cable from the soundblaster.
In other words, I had an internal 4x cd-rom next to the computer. Worked great for years. 👍🏻

Once a friend and I had to make copies of a set of medical CDs, the cd writer we had on that moment was a parallel external unit, I don't remember the brand but had beige and green exterior, its came with adaptec software and the max record speed was....1X. Damn!, that machine was slow and tricky, if you walk near the desktop the software would show you a "Buffer low or buffer empty" message and the record fails. We left the recorder working and get out of the room really! its was the best way to do the job.

I was restoring a Sega Genesis and opened it up to find tons of rust on the inner RF shielding, didn't even matter that it was there really but I sanded it all down and sprayed it with a nice even coat of rustoleum primer to stop it from rusting further. Not sure why but it's super satisfying to know it won't degrade any more I guess.

I made an external hard drive out of one of these. Used a 500 gb Western digital. Great for backups, and it used USB instead of parallel.

Wish I had found this video sooner, as I'm trying to get a CD rom drive going on my recently acquired Presario 433!
From all my reading, and as Clint said, parallel port is pretty slow. I think the solutions would be as follows - Get an ISA I/O card that has an EPP port for faster reading and data transfer - Or use an external SCSI CD-ROM drive. I Know Clint mentions the computer doesn't support EPP, but I'm not sure if he's simply referring to the printer port on the PC itself, you could always add another ISA I/O card to get an EPP parallel port.
My 433 came upgraded with a 66mhz 486 (Dx2 I believe?) 20MB of ram (which is the most the mobo can handle) a vibra soundblaster, and a ISA to scsi card. Only problem I'm going to hit is that the SCSI card I have doesn't support DMA so I have to see how bad its going to bog down the processor in PIO mode to see if it is feasible.
Love the videos Clint, and I agree with your sentiment, for whatever reason these compaqs are just so lovable, I couldn't be happier with mine!!

I believe the yellowing is caused by a type or bromide in the blastic, which is a flame retardant.
Also just came across your channel a month ago and have enjoyed everything I have watched since. Especially the thrift videos. :)

I managed to bag a DataWise CD-ROM parallel drive a few months ago locally from Freecycle with software and some iOmega Zip stuff.
Plus I got a Compaq Presario 522 CDS cheap of eBay about 2 years ago, which has both a CD-ROM and a floppy drives. Better yet it has internal speakers (has on board SB Pro compatibility)!
I feel pretty lucky to say the least!

I had a the same computer growing up. But I had an IDE cable and molex power cable sticking out the back of the Compaq connected to a cd-rom drive.
Cant belive that I trow it in the trash 4 years ago. Upgraded to a dx4 100mhz 12mb ram and an 4x cd-rom and soundblaster 16. :(

On my last PC case upgrade, i decided to move to a small form factor case that lacked the 5.25 bay for a disk drive due to at the time thinking that i hardly used it. A few months later i decided that i did still want to use the drive occasionally since it was a blu-ray write drive that i occasionally used for watching blu-rays but wanted to keep the new case but wanted something cleaner than a Sata to usb adapter and a bare drive. I also didn't want to spend another $80 on an external blu ray drive so i decided to get a disc drive enclosure similar to these but for sata and man it has gotten difficult to find enclosures for disc drives. The one i finally found that seemed to have good reviews cost $50 but i guess that was better than spending $80...

The drive that you used to repair the newer Backpack is the one that Compaq used for their 1999 models. (Used to own one and tinkered with it all the time.) That makes it still somewhat appropriate to use with your Presario ;-)

That Compaq reminded me a little of an original Mac 😉.
Can't wait for your Zip drive review. Once had a tech job, years ago, where I'd made a boot disk to use a parallel drive as a backup device for a company's PCs. This was just before Y2K, so everyone was going nuts backing up their info before the supposed nukes fell 😆. Luckily, 100mb could still backup a lot back then.
And it's a good thing it wasn't SCSI or your have to worry about ID #s, etc.

No, that was a pretty clear "No smoking or anything..." You may get confused a little, because he says it more like "No smoking'ur anything..." I really cranked up the volume on my THX certified speakers and listened multiple times. He definitely said "No smoking or anything..."
