NYC looks very unsafe to ride. especially if someone would open a car door and no way to dodge it.

I am pretty much avoiding bike lanes in this video. However, NYC does have hundreds of miles of protected bike lanes. It is rather safe to ride there if you stick to the bike lanes. It's honestly a cyclist's haven.
