I definitely like the classic TWA scheme better than the modern one. It's more crisp and somehow communicates speed, comfort and efficiency.

TWA retired its very old 747-200s several years prior to the buy-out by American. After the buy-out we stripped the paint from our MD-80s & 757s in Kansas City, polished the bare metal and re-marked in AA livery. In doing so we discovered something interesting - the blue, white, & red stripes were NOT the same width! The red stripe was actually a bit narrower than the other two, because otherwise from a distance it would appear too wide, so to fool the eye of the observer it was narrower. My graphic designer daughter said that technique is called "kurning." (sp?) Also the "American" lettering and the stylized eagle on the tails were self-adhesive decals, with a clear sealant brushed on over the edges to prevent peeling.

TWA delivery scheme is my favorite. My godfather worked for TWA as an avionics technician following his tenure at Sperry Gyroscope. On his days off back in the early 80s he'd take me to JFK hangar 12 and show me around the different planes that they flew. I have all his memorabilia (i.e. service pins, lapel pins, books, etc). Those are some of my favorite childhood memories.

🇨🇦 Thanks Mike. Definitely the delivery scheme of the TWA 747. I really appreciate the info on the CP Air DC-10. Sure do miss those orange, red, and natural metal airliners. My Aunt worked for Transport Canada and i remember colouring in your DC-10 while visiting her at work. Good memories! 🇨🇦

Hi Mike. I just LOVE your videos.
My Dad who passed away this year worked for Qantas for 32 years. He joined the year prior to the 707 introduction. He told me it wasn’t technically a special version but there was an order for KC-135 that was curtailed by 13 units and Boeing offered those slots to Qantas but the airframe was shorter. They were still built from scratch and they had better performance but that was kind of a bonus.
Fun fact, Dad knew the founder of Qantas, Hudson Fysh, and we found out some years ago that one of Huddy’s favourite possessions was a photograph called “The Qantas Cricketers” because it reminded him of spending time with his staff and my Dad is in the photo, along with another gentleman who’s son I ended up working with during my era in Qantas.
Now, I have to correct you, the Qantas 707 and 747 pic is showing the 747 scheme which was introduced on the 747 and later applied to the 707s and two DC-4s as well, used to fly to Norfolk Island in the 70s.
The V-Jet scheme was to remain and the 747 when Qantas ordered 100 series was to have a red cheat line in lieu of ochre, red and black titles and a red tail with a winged kangaroo in a circle.
When Qantas switched to the 747-238B instead, instead of continuing with what would have been an order for 747-138, they decided to go more 70s and the ochre and red scheme with the huge kangaroo was born. I can’t remember the name but it was designed in house by a man who used to do all of Qantas’ holiday posters.
The wings were dropped in 1984 with the red wrap around, by Australian firm Lunn, Dyer and Associates.
I have in my possession a 74 year old booklet in mint condition, complete with 50s watercolour illustrations called “Qantas enters the Jet Age with the Boeing 707”.
You are right they were the first outside the USA with the 707 and for quite some time too, it was a real coup by Qantas.

Hey Blue, is ya book for saaale? Thanks for the interesting info. I would have loved to have seen an A380 in the Qantas ochre cheatlne scheme as a retro jet rather than the 737-800 retro which represents the domestic ancestry of TAA rather than the long haul internatinal history of the 707/747, thus an A380 should have been "retro-ed" but I guess cost was a factor.

Another great episode Mike! I have to go with the classic TWA scheme on the 747 - same as I would with the red, white and blue cheat line American Airlines scheme. It just seemed so patriotic and classic to me (plus it was on some of the containers in Silent Running so I never thought it would go away!) - but I can see the merit in the current scheme also as times change.

CP Air had about 2 other livery's after the orange pumpkin. The stylized arrow tail logo with the deep blue belly, red accent line, medium grey line and light grey top which was my favourite and then the flying goose. The > on the tail as it was the perfect match for the merger of CP Air and Pacific Western, both had some sort of delta/arrow logo and then became a reworked combination of the two. Also, you may or not may not know why they later spelled the company Canadi>n this way? Because we are a bilingual country the '>' could represent an e in French and an 'a' for English, so it is up to the person looking at it of what they see, and this way they did not offend both cultures by staying with either an e or a. Brilliant I say!

Mike, I gotta go with the white and red delivery scheme. That brilliant white and deep red harken back to the Super-G Connies with the radar nose. You know it's a great livery when it looks good on any plane it's applied to! AA's red white and blue over polished aluminum and Eastern's Hockey Stick schemes are other examples of that principle. Eastern ran the stripes over white or natural on everything from Electras, to B720s, B747s and L-1011s. Looked hot on all of them! Absolute best is the Flagship 757! Timeless!

QANTAS actually did two traditional schemes on the 747; "Wunala Dreaming" on a 744 which you showed, and "Nalanji Dreaming" on a 743. As for the Continental Contrail logo changes, there were several proposed colour options submitted for comment. In the end the simple change from black to red was chosen.

I love the TWA twin globe scheme the best.
    My reason is personal..
I love in Miami, and in 1973, I was 11.
My dad is often had to fly to Tampa for the weekend for his job and he was always given 2 airline tickets...one for my mother.
She always refused to go because she hated to fly.
My dad asked me if I wanted to go....I loved to fly....I loved everything airlines...so I immediately said yes.
As we arrived at the airport and walked down the terminal towards the end, there was our airplane.
A TWA Boeing 727-200. twin globe scheme.
I loved being so close to an airliner...as we boarded, You could hear the distinctive whining sound from the cockpit...and the smell of a freshly vacuumed carpet.
Tampa was only 45 minutes away. I had a window seat overlooking the port side leading edge of the wing.
I noticed every detail... from the light gray wing surface and tiny letters that read " no step"...to the flexibility of the outer wing when we were flying.
At that time, Tampa was considered one of the world's most modern airports.
As we landed and taxied, I was so impressed as to how cool looking this airport really was. Once we deplaned, we boarded an elevated monorail that took us to the main building. It slowly passed by the TWA 727-200 that we came in on.
The view of the ship was breathtaking. I admired the aerodynamic shape of the jetliner and the bright red rocket shaped cheat line and tail logo.
I thought to myself, wow what an impressive looking airplane.
Once we arrived at the main building, there was a gift shop and right there on display was something unbelievable..
An "Aurora" scale model of a TWA Boeing 727 in the twin globe color scheme.
    The box are was beautiful.
I immediately had to have it.
At that time, airport gift shops would sell scale models.
That's the reason why I love the TWA twin globe the best.
At that time, I also discovered that airlines had their own catalogue...and there was a section of model airplanes in that airlines color scheme.
They were about a 1-200 scale models called aero mini and they were metal
TWAs catalog was impressive.... you could order 747, 707 ,727 and DC-9.

That is one great video, you've outdone yourself Mike! So many classic liveries, I could fill this page with memories of seeing most of those over the years on airways over central England and at Heathrow, Frankfurt, Toronto and Perth, but one of my all time favourites would be CP Air - I saw one of their orange 747's from the ground with my trusty 10x50 binocs on airways at about 22,000 feet in the 70's and thought it was just the best! I would have loved to have seen that scheme on their DC-10's. I also saw the Delta 747 widget scheme, which I thought looked fantastic, and yes, the 'speedjack' scheme always looked good on BEA's Tridents.
As for TWA, it would have to be the delivery 'twin globes' scheme for me, which would also be one of the all-time best schemes on the 707 and 727.

I love these videos and could happily watch them all day. When British Airways did their retro BEA colours on the A319, I was disappointed that it had no red wings - and I think a lot of people were - but it was because of the heat transmission values of the red paint, which was outside of permitted limits. It's remains one of the best retro schemes. Most of them are pretty cool though.

The Delta 727 without the black nose is so much cleaner. The black nose fit the 1011 as it was on the delivery scheme but the widget scheme was so much nicer on the 727,737 DC-9 without the black. The black nose never made it to the DC-8-71 either thank goodness. I suppose the 1011 delivered without the black nose ( like the earlier artist renditions) would have been the norm and love just as much.
Mike, it would take a little lengthy research but schemes that never made it on to planes would be a great presentation, like the United and Delta DC-8 with the DC-7 scheme. AA lightning bolt scheme on the DC-10 and 747. All the SST artist renditions. L-100s in airline liveries… (there is a AA L-100 pic somewhere). The delivery Delta DC-8 livery on the CV-880. Delta&CS on the viscount . The list goes on and on. Frankly the L749 and 1049 with TWA and Eastern Jet schemes are pretty unique. Shared schemes like the Continental United DC-7 interchange planes. United DC-6 with Delta titles and NE/Delta yellow bird + a widget. I have always wondered if the Pan Am 707 used by National had a National logo somewhere..
    Cheers Sir!

After a vacation in the US Virgin Islands back in approximately 2005, we arrived in St. Croix for our flight to, I think, likely Miami. When our jet arrived, I was quite surprised to see it in the old Astrojet livery, with the polished aluminum fuselage, the double orange "lightning bolt" stripe down each side, and a prominent "Astrojet" in orange on the engine cowlings...recall it being a MD-80. Quite a pleasant surprise, and don't recall any other AA jets having this livery at the time, perhaps just a limited edition type of thing.

The delivery version of the TWA livery looks much better. I think that the AA shiny, red and blue is my all time favorite livery. Good videos, keep em coming!!

While I quite liked the last TWA livery, I have to say the delivery scheme looked better on the 747. Thanks for sharing your videos.

The final TWA livery has my vote. Also for the QANTAS evolution you didn't point out that the Kangaroo lost its stylized white wings! LOL Thanks for the great video.

Love the TWA double red stripes on the constellations and the American silver body with orange lightening Bolton the prop liners that continued into the jet age. I liked the last TWA scheme better than the red arrow livery.

I prefer the newer scheme if only by the narrowest of margins. You may remember an aerial shot for a commercial for TWA, where a Lockheed Constellation banks away from the camera; I am proud to have been a crew member of that aircraft, aka “Camarillo Connie”.

TWA's last scheme was best. The scalloped edges refered to in part 1 are really the feathered edges of a bird's wing.

Hi Mike! I really enjoyed both AIRLINER COLOR SCHEMES - PART 1 & 2, but incredibly you missed these two Douglas customers: Aeroméxico and Mexicana! So I guess you have to continue the series with Part 3 including the ones I mentioned. Best and kindest regards from Manuel

Maybe you could do a video on radio controlled aircraft and the history that leads up to autopilots? Or whatever you think will match your genre?

For me I like the both the best for each era of the 747’s. Delivery for the 70’s the red cheatline of the 80’s and the final design of the 90’s ✈️

I have 2 questions: #1 Both CP and American had shiny natural aluminum as part of their livery. Did this have a clear coat or was polished? Aluminum in its natural state is sort of dull and polished aluminum eventually oxidizes and becomes dull. Isn't paint like on a car is more about function than style, left in its natural state will age quicker especially with the extremes of UV and salty environments they visit? #2 In the golden age airlines put their name on the wings but no anymore, there are 2 airlines that put their name on the belly (Emirates and Delta) surprised why more airlines don't do this for marketing as flying billboards? Rarely can you see or make out the tail. I live under a flight path to YYZ and I always interested in knowing what airline is flying over me, it is so simple yet a great marketing tool. Air Canada and Delta look the same when viewed from ground up but Delta spells out their name.

The delivery scheme on the TWA 747 is my choice. The last TWA scheme is too stretched out on the 747. However the last scheme fit the L1011 and 767 much better. It is always hard to like newer schemes once you see the delivery scheme and the memories they bring.

Once again an outstanding video. While pilot training during late sixties early seventies pilots and controllers referred to CP Air orange aircraft as psychedelic jelly beans. Once told to follow the bean as number two on approach.

I like the TWA delivery scheme best on all the aircraft that wore it. Wish AA had done their retro jet in the “double globe” instead of the twin stripe.

Re the TWA color scheme - I vote for the delivery scheme on top. Flew TWA many times and that was the scheme on all my flights - to me it is most identifiable with TWA.

Delta muddled about for awhile w two average liveries
The current paint is now for me classic. I dread an update
    In general re: any livery
Certain paint jobs are better on certain aircraft.
Example: AA newest generation of the PSA Heritage paint on the a321 looks so much better than the a320
Better resembles of the PSA MD80's
Latest paint on UA is sad
All majors should be required to have heritage liveries.
DL a350 in 1980s paint would be insane
    UA 78K in Tulips & battleship ❤
Plain spotting and interest in aviation I think is increasing, thank you, you tube
