WHOA! MATT JEFFERIES??? Talk about name dropping! He is why the access tubes in Star Trek are still called Jefferies tubes! A complete legend in in sci-fi world. I have been admiring Roy Grinnell's work forever but I never had any idea what he looked like until now. Great video Mike!

When I first heard his name, it sounded familiar but didn’t register until Mike said that he’d helped design the USS Enterprise from Star Trek….
So yes, it was THE Matt Jeffries….

Matt always told the story that his Enterprise was actually used upside down from what he'd originally designed!

Hey Mike, with everything going on lately with China, Isreal and Russia/Ukraine! I'm out of sorts. Just checked this video! I probably had your cover and center page artwork on my walls along with Jeffries and all the rest! All the different aviation information magazines in print in the 70s along was close to 100 different copywrite names! Just in the military aviation history and current development magazines that have disappeared over our lifetime. I really miss them! I have the last edition periodicals of Air Classics. I sure didn't realize it at the time. But after most periodicals went digital. Everything changed! I still love going to the bookstore or, DRIG STORES for their choices of aviation magazines that they had available in the early-mid 70s. I miss those days! Thanks for bringing back the memories!

This has soared to my number one spot of your awesome videos. I used to pick up AirPower and Wings at the local hobby shop until they went under and then switched to a local Barnes and Noble. I still have them in demco folders on my modeling table for reference work when building. The cover art was amazing. I was really impresed with the Blackbird image superimposed over a high altitude shot showing the earths curvature. I really appreciated the explanation of how the image came to be in the magazines credits. Incredible publications.

Love all the issues of Wings & Airpower I've saved over the years. By far the best covers and editorial aviation content out there, But too bad the paper and publishing quality were so cheap. I will never forget as a child picking up my first copy of Koku-fan, a Japanese aviation magazine in the late 70's. The quality of the printing & the photos etc, just blew my mind. British aviation magazines also have high quality publishing; and if quality publishing is your thing - avoid direct digital print books at all costs!

Who’d a’thunk that aircraft art would or could create such a lengthy and well-regarded YT series? Not me, but I am both surprised and excited to see, hear, and learn whenever a new video drops.
My dad was a superb model builder. There was a formation of F-4 Blue Angels suspended in my bedroom as a lad. He also built models of the modified C-141 Jetpak when he worked at Steward-Davis.
I appreciate your time and devotion to the art! Thanks.

Wonderful to have a new video as part of the 120th anniversary of the first powered flight. Always loved your magazines, and of course you art! Cherie and I were at the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers flight at Kill Devil Hills, NC. An amazing thing to be part of, even though the Wright Flyer re-creation flight that day didn't go as planned because of uncooperative weather.

It's great to see some of Mr. Jeffries aviation artwork! His designs for Star Trek are part of what make The Original Series THE best series for me. The original NCC-1701 from the series (from the original Pike era, to the production TV series version) is THE most beautiful science fiction space ship, bar none. FAR better than the movie versions and later series iterations. The TOS Enterprise compared to the movie version is to me like the original 1962 250 GTO Ferrari compared to the (overrated) Ferrari Daytona.
I've also always found i interesting that Mr. Jeffries was the art director on such different series as Star Trek and Little House on the Prairie!

You may not be able to judge a book by its cover, but you sure can sell one by its cover. lol. The artwork shown is fantastic. I like to draw as well, but I stick to landscapes and people because I have a difficult time with implementing the perceptive balance of manufactured objects, i.e., an airplane is manufactured to be (more or less) perfectly balanced, but of course when looking at the airplane it will naturally appear (depending on the angle viewed at) that maybe one wing is longer than the other or something like that because of relative perspective and this is how good artwork will relay the image. When I try drawing an airplane, it will most likely end up looking as if a three-year-old had actually assembled the airplane with one wing way longer than the other and not attached at direct opposite points along the fuselage.

My favorite issue is the one on the history of the atomic bomb, loved the way it started.....While a one megaton bomb might be fine for La Crosse Wisconsin........(where I live).......good information to know. Took that issue to school and showed it to everyone.

A neighbor of mine said she lived with her boyfriend in a hanger at Santa Paula Airport in the 90's and early 2000's. Her boyfriend had a PT23 I believe. They later crashed it in a field of cows.
