“They don’t seek more, they don’t want more.” Many Asian and Polynesian cultures in the old days had the mentality of “Only take what you need.” In this way, they gave their environment a chance to heal and replenish their resources-it was also practiced because it was a way of survival. Interestingly, the real world Polynesians stopped exploring the Pacific Ocean for no known reason and then, a thousand or so years later, they started sailing out again.

@@zbynekurbanek3345 OK, so, there's no real concrete dates I could find for this, but roughly, the Long Pause seems to have been between ~800 BCE (the settlement of Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga) and ~1000 CE (the settlement of Hawaii and Tahiti). One of the more common theories is technological advancement - you have to develop a new type of boats - you can reach the western isles with an outrigger canoe, but need a double-hulled canoe for the longer voyages across the Pacific. "Is That A Kiwi Accent That I Detect?" It most certainly is a Kiwi Accent, Because the actor voicing Moana's Father is none other than Temura Morrison (Jango Fett in Star Wars: Episode II)
The person who sang the song "We Know The Way" is Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the music for this film. He also wrote the music for Encanto and more famously the Broadway musicals Hamilton and In The Heights (which recently had a film adaptation). If you're a fan of the music, I highly recommend watching Hamilton (it's a stage play, not a film). I think it's still available on Disney+ and is regarded as the most popular musicals of the past 20 years.
I just wanted to point out that Te is, among other things, a volcano: Not something you want to be anywhere near when enraged, but leaves behind some *very* fertile land that you can utilise when it's dormant (she literally goes to sleep at the end). Also, many of the polynesian islands are volcanic islands.
This is one of my favorite Disney movies! The music, the story, the characters are all so amazing! It makes me smile, laugh, and cry every single time I watch it ♥

Moana isn't based in Hawaii, it's actually Polynesian, in fact, the name of the movie in Italian is Oceania, which is the continent where Polynesia is located
Ya they couldn't use Moana in Europe because that's the stage name of a popular Italian (I think) porn actress and it would be immediately associated with her so Disney changed it for the European market.
Polynesia is not reunited in a continent but all linked by the polynesian triangle and the pacific ocean ( bc it’s composed of multiple islands ) and moana in tahitian and other polynesians dialect means « ocean »
Moana's grandmother Tala is voiced by Rachel House. She was the Grandmaster's right hand Topaz in Thor: Ragnarok. Also, Moana will get her own series on Disney Plus coming soon.

This is one of the very few contemporary Disney films that I actually really enjoyed, mostly because of its dedication to authenticity. It’s very funny and he’s outstanding in it. He also performed the voice of K-2SO in “Rogue One”.

Alan Tudyk plays a lot of minor characters in Disney movies, particularly animals. Some of his other voice roles are King Candy (Wreck-It Ralph), the Duke of Weselton (Frozen), Duke Weaselton (Zootopia), Knowsmore (Ralph Breaks the Internet), Iago (live-action Aladdin remake), Tuk Tuk (Raya and the Last Dragon), and the toucan from Encanto.
Alan Tudyk is in all these Disney movies he’s also in Encanto as the Toucan and pretty much every movie that Disney has made in the last 10 years or so
I wish there was some way to bring Walt Disney back for a day or two to see what his studio is putting out. I think he would be delighted. This is such a perfect film. So beautiful and the music is wonderful. I still get tears in my eyes when I watch it.
Alan Tudyk has recently starred in quite a few Disney movies and movies based on properties owned by Disney. He plays the antagonistic Duke of Weselton in Frozen, the criminal Duke Weaselton in Zootopia (yes, it's a joke about his Frozen character), and he plays the droid K2-SO in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
There's a really good fan theory that suggests Moana is actually dead for most of the movie. When her boat capsizes from the storm, she is making her journey into the underworld. From then on, she only comes into contact with gods and mythical figures. She is then revived once she restores the heart to Te Fiti.
The ocean couldn't give the heart to the island because the island was made of lava and would avoid the ocean, Maui was afraid of the heart so he wouldn't do it so the ocean needed to get a sailor but the islanders didn't want to leave so the ocean chose Moana instead
When I saw this movie, in the scene of Moana baby on the beach, the song made me feel very sad... when I investigated about the song "Loimata E Maligi" I found the reason.
I just noticed the reason why did the ocean didnt try saving her and helping her is because she doesn't have te fiti heart yet when she was first trying to go out to the ocean. And when she was trying to follow maui hook the ocean tried to drown the boat or something cause she need someone to be with her and maui fit in it
I can tell you from personal experience that being conked on the head by a raft and trapped underwater is not a happy time. Moana's incredibly lucky that she maintained consciousness, and that the water was clear enough to see through.
There’s a fan theory that Moana died on that first night, was dead for the whole middle part of the movie with the gods and monsters and the spirit of her grandmother, and Te Fiti brought her back when she returned to her home Island.
If it’s not been mentioned, one of the coconut characters has baymax’s face, when he got his hook off the crab and was changing he changed into sven from frozen, aladdin’s lamp is on the crabs back
Good ear, yes a Kiwi, Tem Morrison. The folklore of Maui & Moana stretches all the way through P:olynesia cultures as far down to New Zealand Maori. It's a shared lore, a shared oral history of our ancestors that connects us all. I absolutely love this movie! I was teaching in China when it released and Chinese kids loving all things Disney, it enabled me a way to share some of the Maori folklore I grew up with, in New Zealand. I was constantly singing along with the songs in the headset, it got to the point the the entire teachers office would be lit up with us all singing the sound track toegther, it spilled over to our students and their parents who would download the movie for their children to learn so they could sing with us. It got to the point that if anyone said "thank you" for anything, there would be a chorus of "you're welcome", in response. This movie vibed life & energy into our school. One of my most treasured memories of my years teaching there.
I realize I'm fully incapable of doing this, but the first time I saw this film, it made me want to drop everything and live like the ancient polynesians did, surfing from island to island in a raft I built
I wish my mother could have seen this movie. She lived in Hawai’i briefly, as a girl in the 1930s, and also traveled a little around the South Pacific generally (Fiji, Samoa, etc.) with her family. They left Hawai’i and returned to the mainland because they knew war with Japan was coming. But it really got under her skin; she loved it more than any place she ever lived, and always wanted to go back but was never able to. I can’t see this movie without thinking of her and missing her. 24:51 - Tamatoa’s song is sung in the style of the late great David Bowie. 38:29 - Maui is a trickster-hero who is part of Polynesian mythology throughout the South Pacific, from the Maori to the Hawai’ians. The island of Maui within the Hawai’ian archipelago is named after the mythological Maui (or, more precisely, is named after someone who was named after the mythological Maui). 42:09 - Disney has announced plans for a Moana spinoff tv series, but it’s a couple of years off.
moana actually comes from the maori heritage (new zealanders). this also explains all the tattoos. in maori moana actually means ocean, which is why the movie is about a girl called moana and a ocean.
Maui the demi-god play by the Rock as I just saw on read that. A little funny story about his youngest daughter, who loves the movie and his character in the movie. He even sings Maui's song to her and when he trys to tell her he did the voice of Maui, she refuses to believe him. He posted a fun video about this. So have a great day and Stay Safe.
"They're trying to restrict her!" Tbh- it would have been even more irresponsible for the adults to allow a kid to sail out into the open ocean cause, you know, its the open ocean 😃. Add to the fact that no one has sailed in a long time and no one, not even Moana knew how to sail, at first, and she was the chosen one. Sooo.... 1 point to the responsible adults 😅
Love that movie💞 My favourite character is Hei Hei, yup the chicken🤣 I love that scene where the ocean have had enough of bringing it back on the boat🤣🤣 And also love the scene where Moana meet the sea for the first time, it is the sweetest scene ever, and that song, it just melted my heart❤️
The crab, Tomatoa is voiced by Jermaine Clements, lead singer of Flight of the Concords. Now considering this song is the only one that stands out from the rest because of its different sound, it would stand to reason that he wrote this song, right? Well, that's where it gets interesting. He didn't write it. He just performed it. Lin Manuel Miranda literally wrote a Flight of the Concords style song for this guy to perform.

"...your entrails will become your extrails I will w-rip... all the p... ung. Pain, lots of pain!"
That chicken went to Juliard dammit! BTS of Alan recording is funny as hell.
Fun fact: Alan tudyk has been in every Disney animated movie since frozen, in Moana he plays hei hei the chicken
I love this movie. Whenever I’m feeling a little too down watching this always cheers me up. ❤️
Not only did Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Play Maui, he also was Maui's singing voice, not just his speaking voice
He was King Candy? I never knew that.
A chicken and a boar AKA hairy pig usually with tusk were apparently sailing tattoos back in the day for some reason
Alan Tudyk is in all these Disney movies he’s also in Encanto as the Toucan and pretty much every movie that Disney has made in the last 10 years or so
“I like the grandma. I like her a lot.”
Oh boy…
This is the kind of Disney i could watch every day
I wish there was some way to bring Walt Disney back for a day or two to see what his studio is putting out.
Plus Heihei & Toucan & Tuktuk
There's a really good fan theory that suggests Moana is actually dead for most of the movie. When her boat capsizes from the storm, she is making her journey into the underworld. From then on, she only comes into contact with gods and mythical figures. She is then revived once she restores the heart to Te Fiti.
You should watch matpats teory on moana it is really good and has good research behind it
The ocean couldn't give the heart to the island because the island was made of lava and would avoid the ocean, Maui was afraid of the heart so he wouldn't do it so the ocean needed to get a sailor but the islanders didn't want to leave so the ocean chose Moana instead
When I saw this movie, in the scene of Moana baby on the beach, the song made me feel very sad... when I investigated about the song "Loimata E Maligi" I found the reason.
I love how she was a Disney princess that broke the mold. Them, Frozen and Brave
I suggest SHORT CIRCUIT from 1986
His is probably one of my fav Disney movies of the past decade or so. And definitely one of the funniest
I can relate to Hei Hei on a deep level. Sigh.
8:20 "It does look pretty dangerous but I mean she's doing it during the day" because you can't drown during day.
I lived on mangoes and coconuts (76-79) on Maui. Imagine 300 years of lessons and beauty and sheer terror in three short years.
Nicole Scherzinger plays Moana's mom. Also, I love The Rock on this.
The Heart of Te'Fiti was keeping grandma alive
That Monster Crab was hysterical and his song was catchy and soooo good.
In history there was a moment in time called The Long Pause where they stopped exploration for a long time, 1000 years...
I just noticed the reason why did the ocean didnt try saving her and helping her is because she doesn't have te fiti heart yet when she was first trying to go out to the ocean. And when she was trying to follow maui hook the ocean tried to drown the boat or something cause she need someone to be with her and maui fit in it
I love this movie. It's my second favorite "princess" movie, right behind tangled. And I think princess and the frog might be my number 3
@@gerstelb she experiences pain during this time though, as an already dead spirit, shouldn’t she be immune to conventional harm and all that?
The "You're so amazing" line was improvised by the voice actress.
I love this movie so much, it might be my favorite Disney animation.
Much of the soundtrack was written & composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda of "Hamilton" fame
I love the bait-and-switch with the animal sidekick. They set up the little pig to be the sidekick, but nope it's Hei Hei.
I really, really love this one of the classic Disney movies
Oh I’m so excited! Moana is my favorite princess!!! 🥺❤️❤️❤️
"Why didn't he just shape shift?"
He lost his magic fish hook, remember? LOL
I absolutely love this movie. I was close to my grandmother so Moana and her grandmother's relationship reminded me of ours. ❤
I think the grandma lived that long because the heart of tifiti and when she gave it to her her time was done
moana actually comes from the maori heritage (new zealanders). this also explains all the tattoos. in maori moana actually means ocean, which is why the movie is about a girl called moana and a ocean.
Its about all of POLYNESIA not just NewZealand so idk who lied to you but you better get you're story right....
My kids loved this movie so much I’ve watched it easily 100+ times and it’s great every time.
Maui is a combination of Loki and Hercules if you’re trying to match his personality.
That's actually a pretty good description of Maui.
I love how Moana has no idea what she's doing for half the movie. It really adds to how much she's been thrown into the world.
I’m honestly patiently waiting for you to watch the newest Korean zombie show on Netflix called All Of Us Are Dead
I'm an old cynic and usually loathe musicals, but I adored the spirit, message, and luminosity of this gorgeous film!
I hope Tamatoa becomes a recurring villain when they the series. I'd love to see more of him.
One of my favourite soundtracks. Lin Manuel Miranda is a genius.
I love the song! Alessia Cara How Far I'll Go
I have a cousin that loves Moana! He watches that movie all the time!
Alan Tudyk also played the tucan in Encanto, so two Lin written disney musicals in a row featured Alan Tudyk as a non speaking bird.
That moment you realize Moana actually means Ocean/Sea
The Flight of the Conchords song with Jemaine doing his Bowie voice was an unexpected surprise. Shiiiinyyyy
For a laugh, look up Alan Tudyk’s Heihei recording session on TH-cam. His voice talent is under appreciated.
"They're trying to restrict her!"
Tbh- it would have been even more irresponsible for the adults to allow a kid to sail out into the open ocean cause, you know, its the open ocean 😃. Add to the fact that no one has sailed in a long time and no one, not even Moana knew how to sail, at first, and she was the chosen one. Sooo.... 1 point to the responsible adults 😅
Love that movie💞
My favourite character is Hei Hei, yup the chicken🤣
I love that scene where the ocean have had enough of bringing it back on the boat🤣🤣
And also love the scene where Moana meet the sea for the first time, it is the sweetest scene ever, and that song, it just melted my heart❤️
Maui learned he does not need his hook... his ROD is another story... line drawn, right there...
Also when the water comes to life it reminds me of the movie called The Abyss
it is about time a disney princess saves the world by herself girl power. go moana
