jemaine clement gives such sass and style to this song. i absolutely love the sinister, smooth way he hits the lower registers on "well, well, well, little maui's having trouble with his look" and then the way he goes from speaking to singing on "you don't swing it like you used to, man." i'm glad they left tamatoa alive so i hope to see him again in a sequel

I was given a paper by my school saying "Mr. Diamond in The Rough" as diamond in the rough is apart of the lyrics and I searched it up to be greeted with that diamond in the rough means someone is great in character but lacks manners, education, and style... And tbh I agree with all of those
First of all: Looking from a HOMO’s perspective; they act like exes LMFAO But being FR: In one bit, he says ‘And I should give you credit for my start!’ This tells us that he actually had a history with Māui other than him ripping off his leg. I have a feeling that they were friends since childhood. And on all of his missions, Māui would give Tamatoa treasures. But one day, he had to make a choice…it was either the humans, or Tamatoa. Because Tamatoa’s a monster from Lalotai, so obviously, humans would disapprove of him having a friendship with a monster. So to sum it all up, Māui betrayed Tamatoa, his best friend, for the humans. This pissed him off, and they got into a fight, resulting in Māui ripping off Tamatoa’s leg. Not to mention how Tamatoa knew about Māui’s abandonment and how Māui knew about the way Tamatoa acts: ‘He loves bragging about how great he is!’ There’s no way they didn’t know each other personally before all of this went down.

I was going to say, he kinda sounds like David Bowie in a few spots. But then I found out Jemaine Clement does the voice of Tamatoa lol. I should've known!
