- HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH RETRO MOVIE REVIEW | Double Toasted - Whether it's the soundtrack, opening, the silver shamrock commercial, or the fact that you still can't get over the fact that Michael Myers is not in the movie, the 3rd movie in the Halloween franchise has elicited a reaction from Halloween fans for many years (much like Halloween Ends) because in Halloween 3, Michael isn't in it. But from the opening of this movie to the very end, the film is full with so many creative decisions that for some of us, the film still is remembered as being a pretty good flick! I love how Twilight Zoney Halloween 3 feels. I'd definitely recommend Dead and Buried as a great double feature with it. It's another 80's cult gem with a great Twilight Zone style mystery whose tone is more of an 80's Silent Hill.

Used to carch that on Sunday afternoons when the channel was WPIX 11. Creeped me out as a kid.
The book description is even worse what the mask does when activated; it literally opens a portal inside the mask to this dark hellish dimension where snakes bugs spiders literally keep coming out in swarms while the signal is active, like in The Myst
Interesting, it puts things in perspective.

To make the Silver Shamrock theme song, composer Alan Howarth needed a public domain song to base it on so they didn't get hit with copyright. If you listen to the beat, the song is "London Bridge Is Falling Down"

Despite how insane this movie gets from missing pieces of Stonehenge to robotic men in black, the ending still haunts me to this day.
Yes…A very memorable and disturbing ending for sure! I always loved this movie. I remember one of my best friends and I got in arguments over it back in the day. He was pissed there was no Michael Myers. But I kept saying, forget about that, just take it on its own terms and it’s a damn effective horror film.

I think the ending is one of the weakest aspects. It honestly seems like they didn’t know how to end it, so they just went for nihilism. I also don’t like that he looks at the camera.

Nevertheless, I’m sure there are lots of others such as yourself that don’t really care for it either. That’s what I find amazing, how we all perceive art differently.

I actually really like this movie, the ending is great and creepy to me. This is my second favorite Halloween movie next to the original one. Also, to me this movie grows on you with repeat viewings.
Same here. It’s definitely the second best of the franchise. Definitely ahead of it’s time. Very creepy/Erie throughout the entire movie with a sci fi vibe. The carpenter move “they live” is another great one ahead of it’s time.
Considering what Halloween turned into, the Horror Anthology route probably would've been the best course of actiom.
They had the right idea trying the anthology route...they should have stuck to it and made it different stories told around the Halloween holidays like this one.

I was a kid for the first three Halloween movies and was one of the few who appreciated III for being its own thing. And the Silver Shamrock commercial still gets stuck in my head.
If they removed the Halloween title and called it Season of the Witch it would be a loved classic
Season of the Witch is what the Halloween franchise should've been, an anthology. After all it's called Halloween, not Myers. Halloween I and II works great for the Michael Myers storyline, but Halloween III captures the spirit of Halloween like no other movie. Cheesy yes, but very dark nonetheless.

If the franchise was an "anthology," then in what way would it be a franchise? Anyone can release an unrelated horror film once a year--and indeed, plenty of people do.

Halloween III used to be confusing since every other movie in the franchise starred Michael Myers, but now it seems to be one of the best of the franchise besides the original.
2nd one is pretty good too.
Halloween 3 is interesting. It has a bunch of strange/interesting ideas and it’s sad the anthology idea didn’t take off. Only having a reference to the masks in the recent Halloween films.
Low key probably my favorite Halloween movie. Loved it as a kid. Actually still holds up pretty well.

Halloween III was a great B-movie. The fact that they ignored time zones makes the movie awesome.
This movie was 10x better than Halloween Ends. This movie (when I first watched it as a kid) P’d Me Off! Rented from small family owned tape store and watched at a sleep over. We kept wondering when Michael was coming into movie. And the robots looked a lot like him which didn’t help it’s cause a ton!
Conal Cochran was a better non-Michael villain. plus his plan comes with a bigger body count in 1 go.

Yeah, no. Halloween Ends, despite it’s problems, is underrated. Halloween III, despite it’s strengths, is overrated by fans, in my opinion.
I personally think this Halloween is the best of the old school halloweens because it tried to do something original and it was the creepiest of them all because it was actually killing kids. It was way ahead of it’s time.

I'm surprised there hasn't at least been another attempt. But it would have been a good idea, I agree. It would have made Halloween more unique and kept it fresh.
This movie actually ties into the original novelization of Halloween. The first chapter of the novel explained how, thousands of years ago, a Celtic murderer was given a curse, which caused his murderous spirit to remain on earth. That spirit manifest itself in Michael Meyers, causing him to become a murderer. The Celtic curse is tied to the same power that the shamrock corporation used in Halloween III.
I still enjoying this movie today because of how different yet scary it was back in the day! 🎃
This was the first Halloween movie I started with as a kid and this one always creeped me out the most out of all of them especially the ending to it. .
The scariest scenes to me was exposing the androids and the family locked in the room with the Halloween music playing.
Part of what makes Halloween season of the witch scary, in my opinion is that sort of in a way Connel Cochran and the Silver Shamrock could technically be considered to be a terrorist organization and that you can also techically say that the Silver Shamrock mask and the Shamrock T.V signal is actually a weapon of mass destruction.
Dan O'Herlihy also played "The Old Man" in Robocop and the reptilian alien Grig in The Last Starfighter.

The ending scene is the best part of this movie.
I literally just watched this for the first time today. And I’m kicking myself in the ass for not giving this a chance when I was younger just cause it was the “one without Michael Meyers.” Classic film. Great score. Great pace. For sure going to be a staple for the rest of my life come the month of October🎃🎃🎃

This is the first film I saw in the 80s where the overall theme was "f*ck those kids!".
Daniel O’Herlihy (RIP) is Mr. Burns. If it hadn’t been for his roles in Halloween 3 and RoboCop, Homer Simpson’s boss would’ve been an entirely different character.
I remember when they talked about this on the LDT Halloween Special. One of my favorite episodes of LDT!

The thing that makes this movie not work is how it's title ruins it with the 3 in the name.
If it was just called "Season of the Witch" it could've worked in Kickstaring the anthology. But because there was already 2 Michael centric movies back to back, that also ruined the possibility.
Maybe now Halloween has “ended” they could return to this idea. Just don’t number it call it Halloween anthologies: or something.
There is a theory that when Michael Myers was a kid, he got the clown mask from the corperation, which might explain why he went crazy.
Conal Cochran is a bigger villain than Michael. A Warlock who wants to bring back Halloween after it's been turned into a joke by commercialism and time, so he decides to get revenge by taking away the World's Children. Man's badass for sure. Evil to the core.
80s Fans: "It doesn't have Michael Myers, zero out of ten."
2000s Fans: "It doesn't matter if this movie has Michael Myers, it deserves to be judged on its own merits."

This movie scared me as a kid, but it was one of my favorites of the series. And you could never forget that Shamrock song.
Thinking about how specially chosen families are invited to the Silver Shamrock factory for "testing", I just had a stoner thought: This is an even darker version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Getting shot through a chocolate pipe at high pressure? Nah, we're just going to turn your kids into snake and insect factories.

I really do think this could be a great idea going forward with the Halloween films. I wouldn't mind if they kept the theme song, maybe even kept the town, and just did horrific stories that take place during Halloween. I enjoy Season of the witch. And I can see Halloween kinda taking a 'Trick or Treat approach, which was also a fantastic film.

My mom saw the Halloween 3 teaser preview at the movie theater in the 1980’s and she said the entire theater screamed when that witch appeared

I know the first one is a classic because it basically started the slasher genre... however, this one is my favourite. It expands on the Halloween horror franchise as an anthology. And ..it's creepy as fxck!

back in the day, you don't switch train tracks on passengers expecting to go to one destination with a different one. The different may be good, but not expected. Expect enough disappointment to change a studio's mind. I didn't care for Halloween 3, felt like a different universe and too late to claim the name for an anthology. It was hard enough dealing with Friday the 13th show being nothing like the movies.
The real reason there's no Myers in Halloween 3 has to do w/ Carpenter originally not wanting to do sequels to Halloween.....they begrudgingly talked him into writing the direct sequel for 2 (he wasn't gonna do it til he learned they were planning to move forward with or without him; so he agreed to write it & passed on directing...)
When they approached him to produce the 3rd one he said he would only sign on if Michael Myers wasn't a part of it; hoping it would deter them since at this point he was becoming their cash cow.....but they called his bluff & ran with an earlier idea he'd had for an anthology vibe
I watch "H3:season of the witch" every Halloween, Tom Adkins always rocks.

Halloween 3 is definitely the 2nd scariest in the franchise aside from the original. There’s something so oddly quiet and creepy about the build up of the film knowing what it is leading to.
Regardless whatever your opinion about this movie is, you are never going to get that Silver Shamrock commercial jingle out of your head anytime soon.

The only flaw with Halloween 3 is that it looks very outdated. Even the original Halloween in 1978 cinematography looks gorgeous and somewhat modern today even though it was made like 5 years before Halloween 3

I have always loved this film.
The anthology route was the way to go. A silent motiveless killer has a short shelf life. Halloween 2 could’ve been what The Fog became, with a few date and decorative changes. And this could’ve stayed as the 3rd…but money talked and the early 80s was the reign of the slashers.

It's a good stand alone movie after watching it years later, I look at Decker Shado review of this movie makes me like it more
We can reconcile this movie with the rest of the franchise by imagining that it's possible it was this Shamrock company who accidentally created Michael with a test costume with the satanic stone and electronics in the mask. Maybe this test costume had unintended consequences. Instead of nearly dead zombified people, it caused Michael's mind to break in a crazy way while giving him immortality. Michael became a twisted vengeful being of broken morality. Not exactly evil perse, but ultimately neutral and bent on killing anyone he perceived as evil for reasons known only to him. The sister having sex under her parents roof and out of wed lock would be something Michael might perceive as deserving of a death sentence. No anger, no evil, just Michael's judgement and 100% unfeeling neutral punishment for a deserving act.

To this day whenever I hear the tune to London Bridge its the Silver Shamrock version that I always think of first, and I've only seen this movie a handful of times; *that's* how much it gets in your head.
I just saw the movie it kinda reminded me of the Twilight Zone & Goosebumps it was alright to me they should've did a follow up great review DT.
It's a "good" movie in concept. Definitely an interesting idea and clever spin on the Halloween tropes established in the first 2 films. Unfortunately, I think as a result of budgetary constraints and probably a rushed production cycle, the execution just wasn't up to snuff, so ultimately it comes across as more cheesy than scary overall. A shame, really, since an anthology series based around Halloween night would have been cool to see

Rewatched it for the first time in a decade. It was such a good cheesy time. It's unironically one of my new favorite Halloween (series and holidy) films.
