This is like asking me to pick which one of my kids I love more.
I love both books, so I wish the scoring had been closer, but you have to be realistic about these things. Thank you for hosting this, Aaron! I had a blast!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy No matter how it went down, we still had a good time 🙌
I understood that Logen nine fingers reference
Thanks so much for the invite had a wonderful time hanging out!
@@Talking_Story it was a blast of a good time 🙏
This is really cool! I wish prose style and symbolism had been a category coz that's something i always look for
I dropped First Law after book 1, I liked Logen and Glokta but I just don’t think Abercrombie quite maintains the momentum and tension in each POV as GRRM was able to do in AGOT.
Even if it never gets finished, ASOIAF is some of the best fantasy I've ever read. The depth of the world and what's read between the lines just makes it so engaging. The Blade Itself just doesn't have that instant hook that GOT does. It didn't have me too excited to read the rest of the books.
Such an amazing video and discussion. I loved hearing your thoughts and it’s inspired me to do re-reads
That was fun! I feel like it's a different dynamic than we would have gotten with any other host, even though most of you are characters in your own right already.
This was epic thanks guys so awesome!!!
Thank you so much Jim 🦾
you really can't talk about the blade itself series in full if you have not read the third book. Thats when you really get an understanding of who logan is and bayaz
It’s funny how everyone always talks about the characters in The First Law. I found them to be pretty flat overall. I also found them to be somewhat inconsistent and not totally believable. They seemed to sometimes do or say things that didn’t feel true to who they were. And then there’s the additional issue of them being pretty universally unlikable. I didn’t find myself rooting for any of them, which is an issue for me in terms of feeling invested in a story. And some of the dialogue was pretty cringy.
For me, the characters in GoT are far superior and varied.
Interesting concept for the video. As soon as I read the title there was a clear winner in my head. Loved the discussion. Didn’t change my mind on any points but will still fun to listen to you guys 😂🎉🎉
@@pillarmusic1641 thanks for listening to us ramble 😂
I think I'll give Game of Thrones a slight edge over The Blade Itself, but I think the First Law series as a whole is better than A Song of Ice and Fire. I like the characters more, and it has the big advantage of actually being completed, whereas ASoIaF is almost certainly doomed to forever be an unfinished work. That's just my two cents.
I much prefer Abercrombie overall. But The Blade Itself might be his weakest boik. You have to be realistic about these things.
Ok so we started with a clip from WCW Starcade 1997, respect 🤘 too sweet!
You guys should do a tournament format and maybe add another category or two. Then go head-to-head and see what fantasy book wins.
@@three-card-dead now this is an interesting idea 💡
Literally stopped midway through before they're hanged last week to go full asoiaf instead. I couldn't get into the series for some reason, despite on paper being tailored for me (grey characters/grim dark etc..)
You stopped right where the series finally hooked me. When the Northman name “blank” furious it all clicked
@@pillarmusic1641 maybe i'll resume x)
I finshed the part with glokta finding the traitors / the battle between West/ladislas and northmen. But I still wasn't that hooked
Say one thing for Joe Abercrombie. Say he knows how to write a Joke.
Not even close in my opinion. The Blade Itself is good but A Game of Thrones is an all times classic. The same goes for the series overall in my book.
The most astonishing series debut is The Darkness That Comes Before in my opinion with Game of Thrones a close second
I read them both. Really appreciate Abercrombie but you cant be serious in comparing his stuff to ASOIAF…
But they were all of them deceived, for another dark fantasy was forged. *looks at Sara Douglass*
This was so much fun!
I mean yeah, GoT sweeps the floor on paper and is absolutely top tier literature.
But First Law has this intaingible quality that makes it my favourite. It's about the vibes, the humour, the sense of character voice. You will enjoy the rest of the series 😋
@@ZOMGfantasy I mean, Glokta is just phenomenal 👌
I'm excited for book 3 🙌
No comparison. One is blue and one is gold. Come on.
I feel a little sorry for Joe. Not that I think your a scoring was wrong, but comparing his work to GRRM’s just doesn’t seem like a fair fight. 😬
Seems odd to me to rank magic in a book. Unless you’re saying that that’s what makes a fantasy good? Some fantasy has no magic and is still good. To me, GoT is a much better book than a lot of others which have more involved magic.
Am I the only one who doesn’t get it with the First Law? The characterization is great, but there isn’t much plot. I thought they were way too slow. Game of Thrones has both great characters and great plot. Easy choice GoT for me
It's odd that people are talking about how magnificent Game of Thrones is, in terms of plot, when the books aren't actually finished yet ...or actually not even very nearly finished yet! You have no idea whether the plots will come together at the end or not, and neither, apparently, does GRR Martin himself. He said in a recent interview that he's having trouble finishing the present book because he's killed off a character whom he realises now he should have kept alive. That's not tight plotting, is is?
I just re-read the entire book series of Song of Ice and Fire, hoping I would like it more than I did the first time I tried it. (Long before the TV series was made.) I didn't. In fact, with the TV series in my head, I realised that the TV series actually did a lot of things better. In so many ways, the character development was better in the TV version than in the books ...and the TV version didn't hop around so much either.
I infinitely prefer Abercrombie's books, which ARE tightly plotted. The characters are unique-although I think we are not supposed to 'love' them the way we are supposed to love the characters from Song of Ice and Fire. Maybe that's why some people don't seem to like the Abercrombie series as much. However, I don't mind the satirical edge to The First Law at all. The scenarios are just as nuanced as any that Martin has come up with. Abercrombie uses tropes, but sets them on their heads which is fun. And he finishes his series as well. Loved the First Law Trilogy, and Age of Madness. I've read everything Abercrombie has written. I think he's excellent.
First Law is better that Game of Thrones, also WoT, LoTR and any other FINISHED fanatsy series are better than ASOIAF.
The Blade Itself is clearly a freshman attempt at doing something deconstructionist. It's practically experimental in terms of having next to no plot. Hardly a conversation in my honest opinion.
Yeah this worked out how it should have imo. I liked The First law trilogy ok but I would call it mid tier. Abercrombie’s writing is decent but not great. Again, imo:). ASOIAF is just on a whole other level in terms of character development, world building, storytelling and protecting general. I was actually surprised when I saw the title of this video-I was like, “are these two even comparable?”
Martin is way better than Abercrombie.
Not even close. Abercrombie is a good author but come on.
This is the first video I've seen by any of you and I am NOT impressed... You couldn't be bothered to do a re-read before doing a "vs?" Maybe hold off till you can be bothered to do so.
