First time newbie surf skater. Trying to figure out a new habit for this middle-age man, getting in shape and wanting a new habit. Your video really help me a lot as I am brand new to surf skating.
Thank you so much for this video. I have been riding a carver around my neighborhood for years. I feel like I am pretty good at it. However, after watching this video and trying what you are saying here...... I now realize why my surfing has gone downhill the last few years. I have been riding my carver all wrong. All wrong! I have formed some real bad habits around generating speed and flowing. I have not been throwing my weight around and using my arms and springing my legs up and down. I spent 20 minutes today flowing around my garage using this technique. Huge difference in the feel of the board and much more smooth. I could imagine myself on the face of a wave. This video is really gold for me. I can't thank you enough.
stoked man! as you've now felt, it can make a HUGE difference, positive or negative. there's always room to just mess around on a skateboard, and I do frequently. but it's also an opportunity to build new patterns and movement habits.
Best video ive seen so far, havnt surfed in 30 yeats and getting back into it, just started looking for a deck to help relearn and this video has been very informative. Thank you
Great job simplifying the best movement universally across all board sports. This is surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding. This movement of hips and shoulders, using up and down patterns works equally well in all these 3 sports. I see so many snowboarders doing the same thing wrong. Fighting their own bodies with every turn..
Very informative thanks dude. You're a natural coach. Stoked to skate my Carver some more. Been sick and injured and out of shape and looking forward to train and get strong again and eventually back in the water.
that's it! need to physically embody the process and begin to make those neural / synaptic connections. if you know the feeling, it's easier to replicate in the water.
Just picked up the Carver x Lost C7 Rocket 10.5”x32.5” and I can’t wait to be able to surf on concrete all day while these summer Florida waves are non existent.
Well done Coach!!! The RANT is spot on... x-college athlete and varsity coach... Muscle memory is vital to everything. I love the preach on the "feel"... also, the separation of the upper body and lower body is huge... Just got a Carver yesterday to work on my surf game when it's flat. Video taped a ton of footage. This video is legit. Appreciate the drop! Subscribed!!!!
Great video. Not sure who said it, but "Practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent". Bad habits prevent progression and may even get you hurt. Thanks for the front-loaded content and the rant.
A+ video, I'm feeling it! Can't wait for the program to come out. I've seen too many of the other surf skate videos teaching people the wrong shit 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Glad to hear that greg. I find I often make videos that are too long to appease the YT algorithm. It's nice to hear people do appreciate valid longer form information
I just bougth a Surfskate from a shaper here in Brasil, I used to surf like 10 years ago, now I live in the countryside, with no waves. I'm getting a little difficult to pump correctly, your tips are Gold. Thanks.
I really wanna start doing this...I've skated for 16 years but I never really expanded my horizons and I really enjoy the freedom of surf skating. I'm excited
This is the first video out of countless ones I've watched that made sense to me. All these other videos had me poo manning and it did not FEEL right. I was going to sell my surf skate until I watched this. Visually seeing the difference between poo manning and what you just taught us blew my mind. It looks so elegant and not like someone having a seziure in order to build momentum. THANK YOU so much. Knowledge is power. 0.o
As rants go that is a good one! I bought a longboard skateboard at the start of lockdown (as I don’t live close enough to the ocean - according to the guidelines!). I’ve really enjoyed the board and this video has given me some good points to work on! Thank you and keep ‘em coming!
Fantastic tips. This is mirroring the techniques (and they referenced you) explained on an Australian surf channel. I’m very old to transition skateboarding, but new to surf skates (carver CX )
I've just got a surf skate, so I can now change from my poo stance into a Michael Jackson Thriller dance one! Seriously though, fantastic advice, thanks.
love the rant. wish I started watching your channel 5 years ago. just had an awesome trip to Jeffreys Bay and got some rad pics- although I can see how kooky I look with my back arm pointed back. I think it's kinda from street skating that I picked that up. When we do tricks it's often with both arms flung up and out wide. I'm looking for footage of the pro-skaters now to see if they also have the coffee cup arm. thanks for the content.
watch some of the more recent x games bowl skating and you'll often see VERY coordinated arms. they'll move back at times, but they're nearly always coordinated with the direction of travel. street skating is a bit different as it's used for balance and equilibrum. glad you dig the content!
You do make it look so easy. Compressing and extending on a surf skate requires considerable balance and that takes several months of slow gentle practise.
I am quite comfortable on a skateboard, but I would disagree that it takes several months. once people can comfortably stand upon a board and move forward, they're more than capable of extending and compressing. it just requires the correct approach. some flat ground "patterning" can help as well
@@Labuenavidasurf best option... don't fall. wear pads man! ask any ER doctor, there's a lot of 30+ yr. old dudes coming in with fractures from skateboard falls. biggest aspect, remember to roll! absorb the landing. in reality it's a need to measure and weight the risks vs. rewards.
borrowed a guitar saying which is so relivent to surf training 'practice makes permanent' so whatever you practice good or bad will become habituated so make sure you practice the right things
Hey man, Just came across this video. The compression you're talking about in speed generation is like pumping rollers in snowboarding. Great video. Down with PooMan!
I've only snowboarded once, for a period of 5 days. it was SO fun. hoping to do a japan trip in the next year or so. in that period of 5 days, we had 2 days of fresh powder. big arcing turns in fresh powder felt VERY similar to surfing.
Started skating in order to improve my surfing. Managed to break my hip (!) in the bowl the other week. Very uncool. It usually happens to ladies average age 82!
A cautionary tale indeed, hope you heal up quickly! I was thinking of getting one of these carver boards, but at 65 perhaps not. Want to keep surfing every day, not end up in hospital!
I think bowl skating is the best crossover training, carving a 10' deep bowl with loose trucks is very close to the same muscle and reflex actions, it will keep that muscle memory refreshed
Best surf skate vid iv ever seen thank you!! And absolutely love the frothy vibes! Where can we get the full tutorial/surf skate training program? Im sold :)

Surf skating is a great time to really pay attention to your arm movements. Also, it's way easier to get footage of yourself than surfing, really helps to check whether your style looks the way it feels, you could be poo stancing and not even know it.

What I think really helps to simulate riding a wave on these things on flat ground is to ride in an arc! Never ride it straight. To me it feels like the centrifugal force of the arc simulates the force of the wave. When you pump while riding in an arc (for ease of visualization just think of riding in a giant circle) it feels like this. The turn that tightens the radius of the arc is the bottom turn and feels "heavier" because the centrifugal force of the turn combines with the centrifugal force of the arc. The turn that loosens the radius of the arc is the top turn and feels "lighter" because the centrifugal force of the turn subtracts from the centrifugal force of the arc. Just be careful and don't slide out on a "bottom turn" when you start pumping really aggressively.

best thing to do is not ride flat ground! start surfing some ramps so you can actually interact with centrifugal forces.
