    I've been surfing for a year and a half and no one has explained to me about orienting my body to move forward and be mobile. It makes so much sense, I can't believe I've been surfing this long without knowing that 😂

    I’m an intermediate surfer, been surfing for a few years and this is a great explanation. I surf in Florida where it’s hard to get speed and maneuver on small waves unless you are really efficient and smart at the beginning of the wave. I’m sure this will help! I’ve also done mixed martial arts in college and that stance is literally what they tell you to have lol

      Thanks Dan, I appreciate hearing that. I've been struggling to determine where I fit into this whole surf media / coaching realm, as I have a foot in rehab and training, and a foot in coaching, but I'm not an uber high performance surfer, nor an uber high performance coach. I think I fit into that realm of 30-50 yr olds who simply want to surf better and feel better.

      @@SurfStrengthCoach I think you may have found your niche then!
      I did not start surfing until I was 34... and the biggest obstacle that I am in the process of overcoming is body pains/aches of not surfing correctly, which is how I landed on your TH-cam page.
      I want to make sure that as I develop my surfing techniques, that I do so the right way... to prevent future injury, pains, & aches while simultaneously improving my surfing.

    Great explanation man! I’m now in my snowboard focus time of year, learned that including my hips in the “stack” improved my turns, stability and manoeuvres soo much, and l look less like a twat. That’s one of the lessons for both sports i reckon; stop doing the poo man! Can’t wait to hit the ocean and apply that wisdom there aswell, thanks!

    Really helpful videos! I've been trying to fix my pop up which looks on the water like I'm doing a downward dog on the board which is terrible. I've been watching so many, I'm unable to pull the legs through like the last exercice. I've checked the videos, I seem to have the mobility to achieve it (i.e. squats etc) but then I don't know what I'm missing and need to work on to eventually achieve being able to pull my legs under as a one go. Any further tips? I wonder whether being a woman, there are some anatomy elements to this as I know other ladies having the same issue on the pop up. Would arm length change it? Would love your take on it! 😊

    • @gatesurfer
      @gatesurfer หลายเดือนก่อน

      My arms so short I can't carry my board under my arm, I have to carry it on my head.
      It sounds like you are looking down, which is totally wrong. Your body will follow your eyes. If you're looking down at your board, your head will drop. What's more, you'll then find it very difficult to look up from the downward dog pose. Your neck just can't stretch like that. So first, I would suggest keeping your eyes up throughout your takeoff from the moment you start paddling for a wave. (this is true for every aspect of surfing -- look where you want to go, and your board will follow.) Some surf tutorials say you need to arch your back and keep your head up high -- the so-called "banana" position -- but sometimes it's necessary to drop your head a bit to get some extra speed. If you just keep your eyes up, your chin will stay up. Then your body will follow.
      The other thing I recommend is just to COMMIT to it. Visualize this stance that he's teaching here. You want to get from lying prone on the board to this stance as quickly as possible. It doesn't have to be perfect--you often have to adjust your feet a bit after standing up, which helps control your direction and speed. But you have to get to a good balanced stance in the first place, otherwise those adjustments won't be as effective.
      BTW, I'm 66 and didn't take up surfing until I was 50. I can handle 4-6 feet waves OK, and that's where this question of commitment really begins to matter. If you hesitate, you lose.

    2 questions...
    1. where are you? epic area cliff and ocean
    2. So it is ok to point the back foot forward? I noticed that my surf skate performance went way up when I started pointing the back foot forward. Puts less pressure on the knee and you can get into low positions.
    Here is me surf skating doing a roundhouse cutback with back foot forward.. th-cam.com/video/FchufU9AZc8/w-d-xo.html

    I don't understand why +10 minutes talking about the beginners poo stance to intermediate or shortboarders...I'd guess that if we're on a shortboard we are obviously way past that poo stance...

    • @SurfStrengthCoach
      @SurfStrengthCoach  ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you ever spent any time in a surf lineup? Well over half the people on shortboards still have a terrible stance. I’ve seen this across the world, California, Nicaragua, australia, Indonesia…. So apparently it’s not quite common knowledge as you seem to imply. This also comes from running coaching camps for 8 years now mostly with intermediates. A large majority of them have “stance” issues or limitations that need to be corrected.

    • @ivydune4185
      @ivydune4185 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SurfStrengthCoach No need to drop your resume and measure sizes with me. I know shortboarders can improve, that's why I watched this video. Thinking you would be talking about fine tuning for speed and maneuvers, since you said it was for intermediate level and shortboarders.
      But this was a +10 minute video talking about one single wrong (and very rookie) stance. I can get that same advice in any other surfing video for absolute beginners...
      Keep doing your thing. I don't need to point the negatives, just the positives. Amazing video, great advice, I'm just not interested because I don't even know what a lineup is.

    • @SurfStrengthCoach
      @SurfStrengthCoach  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ivydune4185 a bizarre interaction no doubt, but that seems to be the norm for social media nowadays. speed generation is simply 1) having the right board for the wave and surfing the board where it's shape is intended to be surfed (big rocker boards need to be in the pocket). 2) learn to compress and extend appropriately and time it with the wave - you can watch good bowl skaters do this perfectly 3) the stance I apparently do a terrible job of elucidating allows you to use the front leg as a spring or a coil, compress and extend off that front leg and time it with unweighting. watch some videos of torren martyn or mikey February, they're flawless with wave reading and interaction. lastly, I didn't realize nor see where I declared it only for intermediates. It's intended for beginners and intermediates that are transitioning to shortboards.
