    My favorite approach to horror is when a movie won't let you get comfortable for even a moment. You spend the whole thing just waiting for a pin to drop, and even after some tension is released, it sets up even more. This movie was incredible at that feeling.
    Also, Alex Wolff's portrayal of shock in THAT scene was honestly top-tier. Kid couldn't process what happened, he could only go home and spend hours in bed hoping against hope that it was a dream. And while I totally understand the mom's behavior due to grief, I also understand his. I can't imagine what living in silence with that kind of guilt would do to me.

    • @andrwarrior
      @andrwarrior 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      it's so great to see someone mention that scene for that context. He completely shut down from the trauma, which happens to some people.
      His acting was stellar, Toni gets her due praise. Gabriel Byrne deserves some respect too for not going anywhere overboard. It's very easy to play that 'straight man' foundational father role a bit over-emphatic, or too flat. There's a perfect balance in his portrayal of the father in a broken family just trying to hold things together, while also clearly being over his head and exhausted from it all.
      I love how even Joannie gets everyone at first viewing; coming from the support group as someone who 'remembers your powerful story', you think she's just trying to help. But, so quickly she shows her true colors

    I respect how she doesn't cover her eyes or close her eyes and just holds her hands out there away from her face. I see other TH-cam reactors who do cover their eyes. That explains the swinging the clenching and the willingness to fight back against things that aren't going to hurt her. I hope her channel is monetized so she gets something out of being tortured by these movies.

      @@krashd If someone spends most of the video hiding then sure they aren't really reacting... but some people can't help it if they cover their eyes when startled, or grossed out. I give them respect if they make it through the things that bother them & through the movie & react for viewers. I would think if you move on from every single one that hides their eyes or looks away as soon as they do so, then you don't have many channels to watch...

      I kind of felt that the spirit demonic stuff, while ridiculous in any other context, was made impactful by the first half of the movie. The family drama stuff set the tone and ultimately primed my brain for the supernatural stuff, just like how in the movie the cult exploited the family’s mental illness in order to make them vulnerable to Paimon.

      Steve was the only real one in this film, everyone else had their shit and he had to deal with all of them. A happy ending would have been they all died by the cult and Steve got away, driving off into the sunset.

    There are countless details to this film that give it soo much rewatchability. I think you didnt notice, that when peter wakes up at the end, Toni's character is in the top corner of his bedroom. Plus sooooooo many other little details. Rewatcch it, for sure.

    Toni Collette was also fabulous in The Sixth Sense. I just started watching The Staircase with her in it. Only two episodes in and it’s already great. There were a couple nods to The Changeling with George C Scott in it in this movie. That’s a must watch for a list of horror movies. It’s my second favorite haunted house film after Robert Wise’s masterpiece The Haunting (not to be confused with the appalling remake.

    Also, the girl was already possessed, her clicks were from Paymon, the cult sign on the telephone pole where her head hit, and at the end when the evil witch said, we CORRECTED, ur first female form. So really, peter or her mom weren't responsible, the cupt killed Charlie, to get paymon a new body. I think maybe grandma summoned Paymon as well, and she was killed because she also was female. I personally think she didn't want to have peter because subconsciously she knew, from how her mom treated her, and how her mom always wanted a boy, that she didn't want to have a boy.

    IMO one of the best horror movies in recent history. Also, Toni Collette is amazing. Really knocks it out of the park with this performance, but that's certainly not to discount the other actors. All around a top-notch film, or as David Lee Roth might say "a stellar production".

    Something I noticed, and maybe it's just how Kat watched it or the sound quality on TH-cam, is that there's a very low bass sort of 'wub-wub-wub' humming noise in the background of huge chunks of this movie. Sometimes it gets slower or faster, sometimes a bit louder or quieter, but it's constant. That might explain the continual feeling of dread and unease - using very low bass tones for a sort of 'drone of dread' soundscape (alongside the visuals and everything else) is a classic horror sound design trick. But it's usually a lot more sporadic, not used continuously. (There's a bunch of really good videos about it, that provide some examples too.)
    It's also why horror movies hit so much harder in cinemas, or when watched with (good-quality) headphones - unless you have a very good-quality soundsystem with a decent subwoofer, you won't get those tones out of most TVs. (It doesn't matter if you can't actually hear into that range either - the sound still has an effect, provided it's being picked up by your body.)

    I saw this in theaters twice. Both times, I saw more people walk out of this movie than I have ever seen walk out of a screening. It was just way too intense and personal and disturbing. I was profoundly uncomfortable on my first screening; during the second, I was looking for clues and details I missed. Now it's a favorite, mainly for the sheer brass this movie has. It's fantastic.
