Kathy Bates took this role despite insane pushback from her agent and her friends. They told her it was an unplayable role and that it would put her in bad light in the industry. She, obviously, did it anyway. We're lucky she did.

Kathy originated a part of a homely waitress falling in love with a cook in an off-Broadway play called "Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune" for which she won an Obie award in 1988. When they made a movie adaptation in 1991 instead of her reprising her role, Hollywood chose Michelle Pfeiffer (one of the most beautiful actresses of the time) to play the homely woman. When Kathy learned of the casting she could only laugh. There are few leading roles for actresses who aren't glamorous. Still, Kathy has had a great acting career despite such obstacles.

The leg breaking scene is so deviously cleverly done. They show the first break on screen, but not the second. And the sound of the second break is a little louder, so anyone closing their eyes for that still see it in their mind, but with a louder crack that makes it even worse.

The ending, with a random person repeating that "I'm you're number 1 fan" thing is the creepiest part of the movie for me. It's because Stephen King is a writer, so I take this story as being inspired by his real life experiences interacting with fans. I'm sure that out of every 1000 people he meets, 999 of them are not dangerously crazy. But that means if he's met 10k fans over his career, 10 of them are dangerously crazy and they were standing RIGHT NEXT TO HIM.

Hiya Kat ☺️ This is one of my most memorable cinema watches. The audience was wild with this one. The gasps, the sharp intakes of breath, the screams when Paul got his ankles taken out and the collective nooo!! when the sweet sheriff got blasted 😔 The performances are just phenomenal and they have to be when really you have maybe two or three studio sets and most of your film happens in there. Very Hitchcock in the suspense department and that beautifully sickly sweet/unhinged acting from Kathy Bates…just brilliant. Myself and the cinema audience where exhausted after this one…phew lol 😂 Anyways, fabulous reaction as always Kat, great stuff ☺️👍🏼

Fun facts: the movie was shot chronologically to build up the tension between Kathy Bates and James Caan. It obviously worked!
The director Rob Reiner has a cameo as the helicopter pilot.

Growing up, I always heard about academy award winners and never understood the concept until I saw Kathy Bates in Misery. She absolutely owned and personified her. It’s chilling because at times you can’t tell if it’s her or the character. The mannerisms, the speech, the expressions. She totally brought her to life!

In November 1991, I fell off a loading dock and broke my tibia and fibula, topping off a year of absolute suck. I decided to watch this movie, I had heard positive reviews. When the movie got to the scene where Annie broke Paul's leg I jumped and felt the bones separate at the break. I avoided that scene for years after, I kept feeling sympathetic pain. I'm glad I had surgery to rod the tibia back together.
Thanks for the great reaction, Kat!

The performance by Kathy Bates was iconic, had me absolutely riveted as well as terrified, and the foot scene is something I never got over, scarred me for life. Of course, Kathy Bates performance was definitely worthy of her Oscar 🏆 🎥
James Caan was a long time favorite of mine from WAY BACK in his portrayal of Brian Piccalo (true story) of the Chicago Bears and his battle with cancer.... "Brian's Song" is a film I highly recommend, even though it's not a horror movie nor suitable for this channel... He also portrayed "Sonny" in "The Godfather"
His acting is most definitely equal to Kathy Bates. ❤ 🎥

King likes to denote his shifts via the first book after the shift. He's done it for all major shifts, save for Dark Tower.
He usually make the protagonist a writer and the antagonist either a reviewer or a fan, then explain through the book why the author has decided to shift focus and them defending that shift to the antagonist.
We saw it here, when he shifted from supernatural horror to more human threats, and again when he had his religious period in The Dark Half.

This movie is the movie that I love to be scared of. I remember watching this movie, as a child, through my fingers because I was too scared to watch it without covering my eyes... but I was so sucked in I couldn't not watch it. I remember it being on tv and I would click through all the other channels and end up coming back to Misery, because it's just so compelling and terrifying. Even as an adult, this movie is up there with as of the best thrillers I've seen, largely due to Kathy's acting.

Kathy Bates 100% deserved the Oscar, in a hilarious moment in her acceptance speech she apologised to James Caan for his ankles 🤣🤣🤣
Btw, the year after she gave the Oscar to Anthony Hopkins for The Silence of the Lambs so you had Annie Wilkes and Hannibal Lecter sharing the stage.
James Caan gave a superb performance and totally was worthy of a best actor himself.
He wasn't the first choice but a lot of actors refused the role that was for the most part or bedridden or in a chair but he took it and did a fantastic job.
Given his limited physical options, he had to rely on facial expressions to convey most of his character and he was just superb.
The Sheriff and wife couple weren't in the book but they were added to the movie and if they had decided to do a spin off about those two solving crime, i would have been down with it, their banters were hilarious.
Annie Wilkes movie is pretty different from Annie Wilkes book.
In the book she's a straight up psycho and the hobbling is done with an axe and a blowtorch.
Movie Wilkes is much more nuanced going to childish like to flashes of anger on a whim and again, Bates did an absolutely magnificent job portraying her.
Actually King wrote a book in 1992 more of a domestic thriller but that was pretty successful (Dolores Clairborne), and King wrote the main character with Bates in mind having been very impressed by her Wilkes performance.
Bates did play in the adaptation of Dolores Clairborne and in it she gives another stellar performance.

      @eduardo_corrochio ปีที่แล้ว

The Haunting, the original from 1963, reamins one of the most frightening supernatural thrillers I've seen. It gets under the skin and lets the imagination do most of the work. Love it. Great book too.
The Others is another good old fashioned spook show. I love a film with a grand old mansion surrounded by fog, and things that go bump in the night. Also enjoyable is The Changeling (with George C. Scott, from the early 80s). I think hauntings and similar tales are my favorite kind of horror movies. And some anthologies are super as well, like Ghost Stories, with Martin Freeman.

Stephen King published Misery on June 8, 1987, and he has claimed that the novel is, first and foremost, about the compulsions of cocaine use. King was a self-confessed “heavy user” of cocaine from about 1978 to 1986, and he famously confessed in an interview with Rolling Stone that “Misery is a book about cocaine.

Yep, that was as great of an reaction as I thought it would be! So, FYI, in the book, the whole hobbling scene involved her actually chopping off just one of his feet, then cauterizing the stump with a portable blowtorch. Ultimately, seeing that first foot break in the film was way worse. During filming, Kathy liked to have a lot of rehearsal because of her theater background, but James Caan (RIP) didn't like to rehearse, so Kathy would rehearse with someone else and then still get the authentic experience working with James. It's funny how Rob Reiner, who directed "Spinal Tap"', "The Princess Bride", and "When Harry Met Sally" - all great, funny films - also directed two of the best Stephen King adaptations, this film and "Stand by Me". Okay, maybe it's not THAT funny, but, you know. 'k, bye! Can't wait for next Wednesday (well, as long as it's something I've seen and/or haven't seen but wanna see)!
