    Plz note: we're not talking about THE original PS1, we're talking about the HDMI plastic box nostalgia product Sony released 2 years ago.

      Exactly. Dreamcast was ready for the future. Sega always has the beat specs and technology. Reason why we have 3D models of human beings is because of Virtua Fighter. Lockheed Martin flight simulator and hospital technology from Japan made it possible.

      The Dreamcast absolutely failed, but it wasn't because of the console itself. It was Sega. You could just burn the games to pirate them, there was no copy protection. Sega fucked up badly with the marketing and launch. In the end it was a console not a lot of people owned, but the people who did could just download and burn every game for free on limewire.
      Sega failed the Dreamcast.

      @@humane143imperfection6 as I mentioned on another thread, the reason dream cast failed was a lack of ip and circulation of disc's. Sony and Nintendo outgunned them in titles 3 to 1 on average and they never seemed to have enough on shelves at stores. I remember playing this demo of a game called fur fighters, I liked it but we couldn't find disc's at any store even funcoland, now gamestop, only as a rental. Same for games like gundam where my older brother checked stores in town and nearby towns for it as a Christmas present but they were not there. And that's why it's on the list because no matter how amazing a console is if you can't provide the games it's going to fail because there are alternatives that can. If Sega spent a little less on marketing and made sure products are accessible to customers then they could have still been in the console wars today.

      It’s was a HUGE jump from PS1 to Dreamcast. I remember I was at work, watching a video about NFL2K before it came out. A coworker walked past and did a double take. On his first glance, he thought I was watching NFL highlights.
      Also I remember, there was this great privately owned video game store in Manhattan, the guy had an imported Japanese Dreamcast a few months before the US release. He had Soul Caliber running on it. There were lines almost out the door of guys wanting to play it. They were putting quarters up for the next game, like they were at the arcade.
      Dreamcast was a phenomenon for about 3 years. Just the amount of great games. Played Crazy Taxi for hours on end. Ready to Rumble was great. Great gameplay and great graphics. It was an awesome time to be a gamer.

      @@paranormalskeptic3893 Also in terms of Sega alone, most people I know went from Genesis to Dreamcast, not Genesis to Saturn to Dreamcast. And that is a giant leap. Even if it makes perfect sense why such a leap is to be expected. To go from seeing Sega games as visually comparable to the SNES, to all of a sudden looking better than anything else around, makes for a hell of an impression.
      I know this to be the case for a great many people who have been playing games since the 16 bit era or earlier.

    • @paranormalskeptic3893
      @paranormalskeptic3893 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whyjnot420 I LOVED the Genesis. The Genesis and the Dreamcast are 2 of my top 5 consoles ever. I literally bought the Genesis after seeing an advertisement about EA’s NHL Hockey (the 1st one they made). I was blown away by the ad, I couldn’t stop looking at it, couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
      So I sold my NES and it’s games at a flea market, and got enough for a Genesis, and then got NHL Hockey, I was shocked at how amazing it was. And while playing, one of my players smashed into the net, and knocked it off its moorings, I was shocked and in awe, watched the replay over and over.
      I was late to the game getting a Genesis, like 2 years later (in 1991), but I loved it. I can’t tell you how many Genesis games I had, pretty much all of the EA games. It had great graphics, but it was just damned fun as well.

      Due to European PS1 running in 50 hz the games are a bit slower. But they are converted to work with that, so if you don't do a direct comparison, you won't realize it. For their retro box Sony used some open source emulator (without telling anybody) and iso games (as far as I know they even downloaded those iso games from the internet), which led to some mayor compatibility issues.

      Does Germany run at 60hz? Though you Americans always use a lower resolution for some reason.. You have 480p back then whilst we rock up to 576p lol just 50Hz instead of 60 so some things ran a little 'slower' but higher resolution...weird, i know! But that's what happens when developers are either lazy or the hardware is cheapened by using the mains cycle as the clock sync/source - make the timing dependent on that, less hardware and code but if you increase the external (or internal clock) like when i've overclocked a Megadrive and an N64, games can run too fast or sometimes crash and not run at all just due to loss of sync (they can't run asynchronously!) which is a similar reason why 'light guns' don't work on modern screens, the CRTs are synced to the same frequency/refresh rate as the video signal so the gun can 'see' where its looking relative to the scan position!

    This video is great cause it gives me a reason to make a long windy post about stuff I remember from when I was a kid. I saw a Virtual Boy in the wild (store) back in 1995 in a Sears. These days you can only find them on places like Ebay and the dusty collections of collectors. But I saw one in a honest to god retail store. I was in Sears with my mom and I used to go over to the video game counter/section they had set up and look at all the games and systems I would never get. The virtual boy was setup on the glass display case. I was the only one there so I decided I would try that weird looking thing on the counter. I had to kind of hunch over a bit to use it. I can't remember the game. Just that I was hit with the red coloring and I wasn't very pleased with it. I played it for a few minutes and moved on. I was not impressed and when I walked away I was like no thanks, I will stick to my SNES and Genesis. I also remember the Dreamcast and how everyone would say how stupid it was and how they wanted a PS2. I remember seeing them stacked up in stores like Best Buy for really cheap prices. I think I saw them for less than $100. The sales people would try and sell them to customers as alternatives for the PS2 which was hard to find the first few months of it's release. No one really wanted one obviously.

    I had N-Gage when I was in Elementary school and everyone thought I was the coolest kid in school because I was the only one who had it. It took me some time to get used to it but after a while I got used to it. Also for the ps classic, when I got it for my birthday it felt laggy and I had the same question if it was that laggy with the original ps1 back then. I plugged my old ps1 console and it was running the games better than the ps classic without that lag. I still use sometimes the ps classic for a quick nostalgia run after i modded and my 6 year old son loves it. He is reminding me when I was in his age playing the ps1 with the same excitment and happiness.

    • @nekowatt2402
      @nekowatt2402 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was basically the point. Nintendo was really excited and pushing for it but it never hit audiences right. Like Falcon said, a lot thought it was some kind of Wii upgrade. I myself was guilty of that and thought that it was just a tablet for your Wii.

      @@nekowatt2402 As someone that worked in gamestop during the console generation with the WiiU, XBone, and PS4 I had way more customer's that didn't know what a WiiU was than ones that did. Even after explaining what it was some customers would tell me, "but I don't have a wii". Even the demo stations the store received only showed the tablet controller prominently, and not the console itself. I'll never forget the day, a customer get into an argument with me when I told them that the tablet was just a controller for a console and that yes you can play some games on it, but you need the console. But no they said that I didn't know what I was talking about and that they were able to play games on the tablet and they weren't going to be upsold by shitty gamestop. I told them that unfortunately we were all sold out of the tablet, and to try bestbuy. Most hilarious negative survey I ever got.

      @@lumiereeclair damn that's shitty. It's one thing to be uninformed but it's a whole different world to be uninformed and ignorant.
      I guess the problem's a combination of a lot of things. During the Wii era Nintendo decided to shift their audience to the general public which worked really well for the Wii, but that also meant that part of the crowd are people who aren't familiar with the gaming industry (such as the fact that new consoles are made per generation) so when the WiiU came out a huge part of Nintendo's market are definitely confused. Then WiiU ain't really different from the Wii, like it's literally just the tablet and a couple new features so of course that will also cause confusion when it comes to advertising it.
      Another one would be the name itself, WiiU, that does not sound like a new and different console at all and just sounds confusing when it comes to selling it, kinda like the XBoxes. I remember my uncle being super confused with the XBox family bcos of their names. XBox, XBox 360, XBox One and now XBox Series X, like how can a non-tech savvy parent/guardian figure that out? Especially when all the kid says is "I want an XBox."

      @@nekowatt2402 Now imagine this, but with the gamestop staff just as uninformed and ignorant. That's the winning combination that has gamestop in it's current financial situation. There should be a textbook that describes all the strategies and practices that gamestop uses as a warning of how NOT to run a successful business. I'm soo glad I don't work at gamestop anymore, the store I used to work at closed down not long after I left.

      I think that is part of the problem, the other part of the problem is it got a stupid name that confused people and didn't get the hype it needed. they should have went with something corny like "Super Wii" or "Wii 2" or something else that would have left no confusion as to what that system actually was.

    I own 2 Nvidia Shields one of which I bought 2 weeks ago, and I do set up in-home game streaming (from PC to the device), and I consider it to still be the best android set top box on the market. Also Razer eventually bought Ouya out and integrated the Ouya store(s) into the Razer set top box the Razer Forge, which also failed.

    in all fairness I think the stadia was a good idea and honestly the best verison of game streaming we had thus far. It just didn't land because download and upload speeds for alot of people are slower and capped. It absolutely failed, but I attribute that to bad morketing and customers understanding of what they were getting, as well as being too early for a concept that literally depends on better connected people worldwide, which still has a ways to go
