"Hey man, wanna compete in the console market with me?" "Yeah, wanna price our console so high that nobody who wants one can buy it?" "Definitely" -like 99% of failed consoles
Pretty much. Gizmondo was also to expensive. Like do they not know the current market that is available alredy? It would be like a new big ass console release now from a new company or some shit, and they were marketing it and it sounded better than xbox series S or playstation 5, and it did everything 10 times better and it had all these cool features. But oh yah, it costs 1300 dollars. Like im not gonna buy that shit when i can get a playstation 5 for 600 bucks. Like they have to know the market. If anything, really push the console and do all that shit and find some way to release it for cheaper. I mean, the switch isn't the greatest in terms of the tech and graphics and all that, but it only costs 300 bucks. And the games are really good to.
@@weeebie price does matter, that's why the 360 was cruising early 7th gen until the skin versions came out as at the time the PS3 was trying to sell for like twice the 360, which in pretty sure was priced to be more expensive than the the ps5 and series consoles
Scott the Woz actually mentioned that during E3 1995, Sega announced the Saturn was ALREADY available with a $399 price tag. Announcing that the Saturn was already available had actually pissed off many retailers cause they wouldn't be given the appropriate amount of time to market the game in their store. Thus, many retailers refused to sell the Saturn.
That and a handful of other problems. Sega Japan and Sega of America hated each other. The head of Sega America didn't want 2d games (something the Saturn excelled at) and only wanted polygon based 3d games. Both Sega of Japan and America did a bunch of stupid stuff.
@@Gatorade69 That's insane because I actually loved the 2D stuff back then. 3D was often meh because it wasn't something really mastered yet. Even now when people play games of that time period, the 2d holds up much better than a lot of the 3d stuff. And I was absolutely the target market. So I dunno.. Japan probably had it more right...
@@zhawkmoth3653 I don't necessarily think Japan had it more right, they did in some regards and not in others. It was Sega of Japan's idea to release the Saturn with no launch leaving a lot of pissed off retailers, some who dropped the console and did not sell it. It was also Sega of Japan that decided to not have a standard and or good dev kits and reference materials, which is why a lot of companies chose Sony and the PlayStation. Some sources claim that Sega wanted to keep it that way so their in house developers would have an edge. Both Segas made some really stupid choices, I wonder what could have been if they had both worked together.
Smash bros Wii U is still a killer smash bros. game. I can't really think of anything else though. I also liked the Wii U and 3DS eshops as well. A ton of games on the Wii U that still don't exist on switch yet. And switch just lacks the personality. All the menus are blank with no music playing.
Whenever i see a company fails miserably, i feel bad for the people who founded and established it. I know this is how world works and no one stays relevant forever, but it’s kinda heartbreaking when you see someone puts heart and energy into something then it fails.
The funny thing is that Sega of America had enough money to support the Dreamcast an extra 2 years we'll as Sega of Japan brought out the white flag and surrender.

I was amazed that anyone cared about the Ouya. I remember being so unimpressed when I saw the Kickstarter but a bunch of friends and youtubers I watched back then thought it was gonna be an insane innovation. It looked like trash and the backlash after it released was hilarious
A good friend of mine kept bugging me to port one of my games to the Ouya... he said it was gonna be the most amazing console ever. I was reluctant because it was coming from a company with no track record, so I held off but kept it in the back of my mind. Then when it launched, it came to the surface that other developers were having a hell of a hard time with communication with the parent company... there were a lot of technical issues and the Ouya developer forums were apparently flooded with complaints and inquiries, all of which were either being ignored or just brushed off. I don't think I've ever breathed such a large sigh of relief for being cautious.
The only good thing about the Ouya was that it did spawn Towerfall that was later ported to PS4. One of the best arcade style local multiplayer games ever made.
I never even heard of the ouya but when I saw it in this video I knew it was doomed just from the size of it and the look of the hardware. It looks severely underpowered. If it had n64 level graphics I'd be surprised
I’m a huge fan of The Act Man, I even got my dad into the channel and I watch Avery new video with him. But I gotta say, this is just my favorite video from the channel. It’s just well put together and covers an interesting topic. I rewatch this video frequently.

I worked at a Gamestop during the 32-bit to 128-bit era and distinctly remember my GM coming back from the manager conference in Texas _(I think Darrel Hammond was the comedian that year...)_ followed by two boxloads of swag in the mail but the shiny new NGage had made it back with him on the plane.
It still baffles me how Sega was able to release one of the greatest console's in the history of gaming, the Sega Genesis, then go on to be completely irrelevant just 5 years after the end of that console's generation.
Saturn was very underrated. That system had great games and in some ways it was more powerfull than the Playstation. Saturn did 2D games much better than than PSX, but at the time 3D gaming was all the rage. Add to that it was difficult to program for, the disastrous marketing and half the major retailers boycotting the system... Plus the Saturn had an internal memory and memory sticks. So you could actually save your games with buying a stick.
I believe that most of the success of the Genesis was due to SEGA of America. SEGA of Japan was out of sync and didn't understand that the US was a much bigger market than Japan and VERY VERY different. The book Console Wars was a fantastic "read" ( I actually listened to the audio book). Sega of Japan seemed upset that SOA was doing better than them and put their foot down and continued to not read the room. Thus the downhill slope of Sega.
@@MidwayMaiTais Somewhat. Sega of America did do a great job marketing the Genesis (and really helped Sega in America) but the Mega Drive was also big in Europe and South America too. There was a lot of animosity between Sega of Japan and Sega of America but both of them did a lot of idiotic stuff.

Dreamcast was an awesome console. I’d buy one now if I saw one in my local gadget shop. It still has amazing games like Shenmue, Shenmue 2, MSR, and the Sega arcade classics.
The reason streaming based consoles are failing now is that people don’t realize that streaming games like tv shows is too difficult. We don’t have the proper networking infrastructure in the majority of the world to actually accommodate consoles like ouya and stadia. Not just that but proximity from the server can mean anything from a seamless game experience in a state close to the servers, or a Google slideshow in an area far away…

The Nintendo GameCube was a great console it deserved more success than it got. But the PlayStation 2 was the better machine because it had the best games most of the third parties avoided the GameCube and robes because of mini DVDs it was a lot easier to make games on the PlayStation to an Xbox then it was to make it on GameCube.

Fun Fact about the Virtual Boy: The prototype used 3 led screens, the classical RGB, to show nice non-irises melting graphics. I have fond memories of my 2600. I think the lesson to be learned here honestly is that even though it was tried and failed there was much to be learned about what works and what does not. This translates now into the games we have today. Also I hate motion controls with a passion.
I bought my 3DO second hand, near the end of it's life cycle. I loved it. But then again, there were a bunch of games available for cheap at the time and I only paid $75 for it including a dozen or so games
When I was still on Famicom (I didn't stumble, I really meant Famicom. For some reason they sold better than the NES. Imagine all the bad consoles my father could've ended up picking, yet he picked the right one. He wasn't even a gamer, he went by what the shop owner advised him to buy. That was a summer well-spent at home.
The Wii U is not a pro model of the Wii. The fact that this confuses so many people is part of the reason why the Wii U failed. To this day my sister still can't understand what a Wii U is

...huh??? they literally designed it and advertised that u can mod it. just imagine if it didn't fail all the cool mods u could buy on the blackmarket. so wtf u mean satan and karen
Slight correction: While Wario Land is one of the best Virtual Boy games, the series started on Game Boy. The Virtual Boy gave us nothing but some bad to mediocre games.
I used to have an n-gage. Playing pathways to glory with my friends at school, and not having to carry around a separate mobile console was a lot of fun, and convenient.
I bought the Wii U (the only console I've bought aside from a PS3) because I'm a Nintendo fan and BotW was made available on it. I did like how in BotW the controller was used to aim arrows, control Sheika slate powers, and a few of the shrines required you to tilt the controller which turned the entire platform puzzle. BotW and Super Mario exclusives were well worth it IMHO. Nintendo still supports it.
I'm the lead dev of Retro Arena gaming and media OS, I can help you set up and try these retro systems without spending $5000 The Wii U didn't fail because it's bad, it was poorly named and advertised, however, a modded Wii-U can play every previous Nintendo system from nes to GameCube and n64. The fact you can grab one for $100 now means you should buy one and softmod it for free. The GameCube with HDMI and wireless controllers alone is great.

This. The Saturn was rushed to come out before the PS1, which led to supply issues and a lack of games.

I’m thinking of pulling a NCR Trooper with a new account called “The Stargazer’s Child”, asking him to tell the story of the shepherd.

I remember when Philips would run hour long infomercials for the CDI right after Saturday morning cartoons. 9 year old me wanted one so bad. My parents thought I was nuts for asking for something that cost more than a used car at the time.
Those snk fighters were arcade like.

When I was still on Famicom (I didn't stumble, I really meant Famicom. For some reason they sold better than the NES. We had access to both in the middle east), my father wanted to buy us a gift for summer vacation after doing well in school. How lucky were we that it ended up being the original PS. Imagine all the bad consoles my father could've ended up picking, yet he picked the right one. He wasn't even a gamer, he went by what the shop owner advised him to buy. That was a summer well-spent at home.
The list contains three of nintendos consoles, two being a pro models of the earlier models ,the very reason nintendo doesn't release a switch pro.
The Wii U is not a pro model of the Wii. The fact that this confuses so many people is part of the reason why the Wii U failed. To this day my sister still can't understand what a Wii U is

Why is Oddworld Strangers Wrath so AWESOME?
That's the Oddworld game you want him to cover? Oddworld was best in 2D
Yep I played it on the OUYA XD
What ive learned: 90s designers must have been wild
Honey, you don’t know the half of it.
🤣🤣🤣
For someone who owned the N-Gage I absolutely loved it. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as people say... you just looked odd when you would talk on the phone lol
The CEO of Ouya is like if Satan and all the Karens in the world were combined into one being

they literally designed it and advertised that u can mod it.
just imagine if it didn't fail all the cool mods u could buy on the blackmarket.
so wtf u mean satan and karen

Slight correction: While Wario Land is one of the best Virtual Boy games, the series started on Game Boy. The Virtual Boy gave us nothing but some bad to mediocre games.
Wario land only solid game
Mario clash is also pretty fun.
The PlayStation Vita was such a failure that it's not even on this list.
PSVITA sold more than all the consoles on here. its sad to say its a failure cause it was so good

I used to have an n-gage. Playing pathways to glory with my friends at school, and not having to carry around a separate mobile console was a lot of fun, and convenient.
I love the terran scream everytime EA is mentioned in your videos
That's cuz it sounds like a long "EAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaa". Great audio pun from the Acting Man.

I wonder what would happen is Sega decides to make a new system nowadays.
I'm the lead dev of Retro Arena gaming and media OS, I can help you set up and try these retro systems without spending $5000
The Wii U didn't fail because it's bad, it was poorly named and advertised, however, a modded Wii-U can play every previous Nintendo system from nes to GameCube and n64. The fact you can grab one for $100 now means you should buy one and softmod it for free. The GameCube with HDMI and wireless controllers alone is great.
