  • They cannot legally work, nor send their children to school. They are at risk of exploitation, abuse - even caning. They are the 150,000 asylum seekers and refugees who have fled their homelands for Malaysia. 101 East investigates whether authorities and the UN are doing enough to protect the world's most vulnerable.
    Her newborn baby was in intensive care, the pain of her delivery still achingly raw. But things were about to get a lot worse for Khei Chi Soh, a refugee from Myanmar.
    One day after her daughter was born, immigration officers arrived at her bedside at a Kuala Lumpur hospital. They told her she could see her baby one last time. Then they took the distraught young woman to a detention centre for illegal migrants. For a month, she did not know whether her daughter had lived or died.
    Khei is one of at least 150,000 asylum seekers and refugees who have fled their homelands for Malaysia. But instead of finding sanctuary, all too often what awaits them is abuse and exploitation - even at the hands of authorities.
    Pursued by a government intent on stemming the influx of migrants, refugees say the UN's refugee agency is also failing them.
    Malaysia has refused to sign the UN Convention on Refugees, meaning that those who come here must register with the UNHCR and have their claims of asylum certified before they can join long waiting lists to move to another country.
    Often it can take a decade. They live in fear of the police, who they say regularly demand money in exchange for not hauling them off to detention centres notorious for abuse.
    Forbidden from working or sending their children to school, it is a fragile existence for many as they struggle to survive in society's shadows.
    In this extensive investigation, complete with undercover filming, 101 East exposes the hidden, fear-filled world refugees inhabit in Malaysia and asks, who is going to help them?

    Whatever the reasons for the anti-refugee attitudes of Malaysians, there is no excuse for mistreatment of detainees. The treatment of the woman who gave birth while in custody is despicable.

    get this right, there are people coming into malaysia with no full legal documents, how are we supposed to check their background. criminal background, disease background, etc.. and there are people that came here to be in the prostitution sector which is illegal here.. if it is horrible here, why come here? we have a corrupted government to deal with.. if they come from a warring state, then it is more important to check the background. so they came here saying it is easy to get in... why? corrupted people are mistreating these poor people because they are easy target of scam because of their illegal state..

    before anyone condemns Malaysia, take a look at your home country first.
    or even the state of the refugees.
    just think, if Malaysia is so bad, why do the refugees continue to flock there.
    I am from Singapore, very sad that my country can't do more than it is doing now, which is nothing.

    Unless they are migrating because of a war in their own country, why should other countries take them in? They come illegally to another country expecting other government to feed them and house them when that other goverment can't feed and house it own citizens. How is that reasonable? They are allowed to go back to their own countries to their families, so if that asilium is so bad, just go back home.

    Am here because Al Jazeera reported inaccurately on Malaysia in Year 2020.
    Since Al Jazeera is champion of human rights, how come Al Jazeera do not do a documentary on human rights of migrant workers in Middle East countries, especially on housemaids (from Philippines) whom are mistreated and often sent in body bags / coffins back to Philippines. Blessing in disguise that they moved their office out of Malaysia (in early 2000, if I recalled correctly). Maybe just to discredit Malaysia's achievement on the fight against Covid while seeing their home country, Qatar Covid-19 counts reaches 100,000 mark.
    Producers of the documentary by Al Jazeera is just "intellectually challenged" to do proper research and not doing a balance report, ie from all angles / perspective. How did the producers can approve the programme to be aired. Al Jazeera reporters, editors, materials researchers and producers had ethically failed and with zero integrity and responsibility on their reports. Wannabe to be international news outlet but failed flat and turn out to be another FOX News that spit false news and might be turning into an possible PR company or tool to discredit individual(s), companies and now a country.

    If life in malaysia for refugees are so horrible, how is it that the refugees are still continuing to come here? Granted that some refugees are being oppressed and we should help those in need. Often the ones who are criticizing are the ones who did little to help. Just saying.

      The aggressor towards refugees are often the local population unfortunately. They feel threatened when faced with the incoming new culture/language/lifestyle that they fail to see that every person is a the same human being, just diff nationality etc. This is compounded further with evil whispers of imagined threat and danger to the local populace that they lash out against the immigrants. This is happening not only in asia but in europe and africa as well.

      Not true.
      Where do you get this information from?
      Which schools do they go to?
      Do they study in the same schools as Malaysian children or do they at the least obtain standard certificates which they can later use in life, either in or outside of Malaysia to further their study or work?
      They go to places only called "school" built by donations from normal people and NGO's to at least make sure they can read and write and that's about it, at the end of their study they don't get anything that will help them in any way, and what they learn is not up to standard at all.
      Malaysian government and UNHCR has done nothing for these children so far.

    the situation in the KLIA detention center is (for those who want to know) 1) if you have slippers, yes, you can wear in the cell. if not, then your expensive shoes will be lost. 2) cannot bring anything except a broken (or cut, i don't know how to put it correctly) toothbrush, toothpaste. 3) have to automatically shave all your hair the next day. everyone who are arrested have to shave. no matter whether you commit crime or not, as long as you are in the center (another word: camp) you cannot have any hair. 4) any muslim must worship at least three times a day (other wise the security will come and beat that person) i am not saying bad thing about islam. i am saying about those security guards who are doing this. i have alot of friends who are muslims and they are also my very good friends..i am saying nothing bad about any religion. but what happened there is real. I saw with my own eyes. but the security guards do not come always so some people who are lazy to pray play while the cat is away, some people who are sick are allowed to rest..they don't need to kneel to pray which is good.. what else...5) no one can come and meet you, you cannot call or try to contact any person within 14 days, which means anything can happen without any of your friends or relatives knowing where you are and how you are..

    Let Malaysia wash her hands now. This documentary itself revealed that Malaysia does this on voluntary basis, out of her own pocket, out of her kindness to the humanity. When our funds are drying up, can u blame us for not being so generous to the foreigners anymore? We shouldve turn blind eyes like Australia did. Now, not only we are condemned and shamed for something we did as a favour, but those people that we helped also shows no gratitude or humility that they are being helped even though we have no obligation to do so. Malaysia is like that kind nerd kid who got taken advantage of and bossed around by those popular and muscular students (UNHCR and western countries).

    Malaysia should be strict and tighten the law on illegal immigrants coming in or just send illegal immigrants back to their country.Since Malaysia has no ability to keep the refuges or make them residents , why should the government waste their time by trying to do so .I know I am not the government or so what but this type of stuff needs to be taken seriously. And I know there is a better way to solving all this problem.

With our hospital and universities fund being slashed now, wont UNHCR take note that we simply dont have the means to house anymore refugees? We do this as a favour, but when we are running out of budgets to do it, they (western countries) condemn and shame us instead of supplying us with what is needed. sawadikin im sorry but please do not confuse Islam with malay culture. Islam is not a religion of one a singular race but all human being n this missconception is a dangerous one in my opinion. This is not a legitimate arguement. its not about religion, its more towards race using religion to justify descrimination.

    • @sawadikin
      @sawadikin 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      do you realize every human being do their act based what their believe? like religion or superstition,
      malaysian goverment is not secular state, but religion based, deity .
      even secular state like turkey have huge influence by religion dominate there, or america never secular because people who run goverment have believe in religion.
      i think secular state never exist, so your opinion is not right.

    • @up9948
      @up9948 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sawadikin yes i do admit religion plays apart in this but ur missing my whole point. The driving force behind is racial agenda not religious. Its says nowhere in the quran about other races above others so to say its purely religious is absurd. Its politically motivated n to put blame on just religion is in my opinion is just plain stupid. As a Malaysian myself its because the long history of invaders into our country which makes it difficult to accept others. Others being viewed as invaders is a driving force in the political landscape in Malaysia n its a very old one n needs to change. My point is that, Islam or any other religion is not to blame but rather the people who interpret it for their own politcal agenda which is equally wrong in conservative or secular ideology of islam or any other religion

    • @up9948
      @up9948 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sawadikin btw i myself dont believe there will ever be a truly secular state in which any nation can govern, especially when the majority of humans on earth r themselves religious in some way or another. Frankly the ideal state is almost impossible to exist which all people can truly live in harmony. That is the cold hard truth sawadikin, its just is that way since nations were built from the beginning of civilisation until now. There will always be conflict of interest among people maybe political, religious, racial n many more.
      i hope we can be friends even with our difference of opinion because i do love having these kind of debate to further my understanding n other's.

    This is shameful to treat humans this way, the authorities in Malaysia can help but are not compelled to and that is the problem, it will be a never ending problem as far as the Malaysian Authorities are concerned, as there are regional issues within surrounding countries. To politicise this issue will condem these people, perhaps working with both UNHCR and the Malaysian Authorities and not politicising this can be of benefit. Is there going to be a follow on program? I can see a dilemma separating mother and child, there are no clear solutions, and the lawyers are politicising the issue, this will exacerbate tensions between the UNHCR and the Malaysian Authorities. Good documentary but a sad one. There are no winners only loosers in many of these instances.

    People keep blaming refugees or foreign workers. Yet, they don't blame *LOCAL MALAYSIAN* employers for hiring them. Foreign workers are *cheaper* and *easier* to get than locals. People come to Malaysia because there's a *HUGE DEMAND* for labours or cleaners or even maids.
    If Malaysian employers don't hire foreign workers, then most people will not come to Malaysia. Simple as that. Considering how corrupted Malaysia is now, I don't think this problem will be solved anytime soon.
    I feel very disappointed and angry at how *SOME* RELA or police treat those humans. This is what happen when people abuse their authority and power.

    The population of Malaysia is about 31 million. Legal migrant workers number about 2 million, and illegal workers are about 4 million. Then, there are the refugees. This video highlights only the problems. If word gets out that Malaysia is a horrible place for foreigners, then perhaps fewer would come to the country, which could be positive. Sure, refugees should be better treated, but what would happen to Malaysia when even more illegals, even from as far away as Africa and Latin America come to find opportunities there? However, think about it: With foreigners making up about 20 percent of the people, how bad do you think have Malaysians been treating outsiders?

    I think Aljazeera has to let this person risk to give such report. Using drones to shoot videos from above, which i think is illegal to have in Malaysia, pretending as a priest to go visit to detention centres ( i don't think they will allow you to have such a spy cam. if you are caught with the spy cam, the RELA or any one in authority can beat you, I think. and if you die, may be there is almost no possibility these authorities themselves will admit it is their fault, because I once was in so-called the best detention center: KLIA deportation center because I just woke up and did not wash my face but went down stairs to buy a bottle of water. But then there were people without uniforms or badges or any other sign. They said nothing but suddenly asked me for IC ( the ID card). Then I said, i just woke up and so I would go upstairs and bring my document back. But they would not allow to go back and they asked me another question. Then I said, I do not know who they are, I asked them to identify themselves. But none of them replied me with respect. They just said they have authority to arrest anyone without proper documents. I said I respect Malaysian laws, I followed Malaysia laws, I do not do anything against the Malaysian laws so I also repect them. But you need to show me your police badges if you are police, I said. But they did not respond, instead, they said, since you cannot provide us with proper document you are arrested bc of immigration law. and I had no chance to inform any of my friends anything by phone, I was handcuffed and taken to their police office. Then only I know they are police. Before i was taken to the police station, I tried to run away, because they may also be robbers or any one committing crimes, trying to ask for money. but they just grap me and beat me from behind. It was not very hard and painful, but what i do not understand is they should have shown me their police badges, right?
    I spent 8 days in KLIA detention center. I lost my belongings which I gave to the officers there. my belongings were supposed to be given back to me.
