- I take apart a sm420 transmission that I picked up off of craigslist for $100.
The transmission is in such good condition that I don't think it even needs a rebuild. I use some free keroseen that I had to clean off the gunk.
Just picked one up for my 83 Cj.
Cant wait to feel that low gear.
It is a 53. It has the enclosed drive shaft adapter. Those old 1/2 tons used a enclosed driveshaft.
Love this video! I'm going to inspect mine so good to see one apart!
All the gaskets, TRUST ME. Its better than changing them in vehicle
Great unit. I have one in my 59 GMC.
That looks like a really clean SM420. Synchros look great. Good luck finding the open driveline rear bearing retainer. I was lucky to find one after two months of searching.
Thanks.
I have a sm420 and I love it lol
BTW, these are built like a rock. Jeepers love them. The old trucks redlined at 2800 rpm or so. The gears are usually great. Tallest first gear ever offered in a production transmission.
Looks awesome!
Thanks!
Your transmission number 38xxxx would be a 1964 thru 1967. Earlier 60s models started with 59xxxx.
Hey gearhead I have a question for you I'm back here again and I have the same transmission LOL but I found out the entire time the thing was running on almost double the amount of fluid that was supposed to be in it the transmission won't downshift and I assume that's because of all that fluid all in the synchronizers Maybe but what do you think I should do?
Will a sm 561 fit to my 1985 k10
I would have never guessed on new oil hurting where an old oil was called for; where did you learn new oils could hurt the brass?
There are some who contend that the high sulpher content in GL-5 oils can eat brass synchos. You can do some further research yourself or not.
Sm420😮 AWESOME! I would love to ask you some questions.
I don't know a whole lot but, fire away with the questions!
@@Gearhead.327 Mostly just exchange knowledge. I did research on this about decade ago for jeep build but the donor Chevy k1500 motor blew before I had a chance to swap it over. If memory serves me this is a tank of a transmission but It's not recommended for highway driving. What is your top speed? What motor do you have? have you ever hooked up a Atlas transfer case and if so did you use Novak's adapter? I have more but this would be a good start. No rush by the way any info you can provide will help a lot.
So the granny gear would be great for hauling boats out of the water and climbing very steep grades
Would you be willing to help me out in the positioning of the gear fork when you put it back on, I believe my sm420 on a 3600 chevy is stuck on 1st gear
I’m having the same problem can’t find any info on how to put back on
I am new to this. how can one tell the difference between a sm420 two wheel drive from a sm420 four wheel drive? thanks for your feedback...I am looking for a 2 wheel drive set up if possible
I believe that most sm420s required an adapter to make it 4wd. Any sm420 should work.
@@Gearhead.327 thanks for feedback...that's what I figured too
Why can't some small company start building these transmissions again? There are companies who build transfer cases. Some companies make billet engine blocks. Others make custom engines. I don't think that manual transmission is so complex that it can't be built by a small company...
Novack conversions sell them
