      you can do it , it goes easier with 2 people. My wife & I re did the bench seat in our 59, what a difference! It completely changes the ride experience. i used 2" of foam & batting to fill in areas as needed. good luck

    I love how you’re fixing this truck. The average person doesn’t always have the money to do a full restoration, but can do this and have a fun drivable vehicle that won’t break down on them all the time. Fix what’s important, leave the rest.

    I have a rear seat backrest with colour fading from the sun in a 1961 Humber Hawk Series II project car that have.
    It is vynal and it hasn't gone brittle in the faded area.
    I would like to re-colour it to try and restore it rather than replace the original vynal.
    A video on that would be interesting to me. Maybe testing colouring products

  • @markk3652
    @markk3652 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can use 9 wire to attach the steel rod to the underside of the springs for the hog rings. The welding is more permanent, but with 9 wire and some lineman pliers, it can be done without the welder. Another quick tip for a pleasant cab smell is a bar of soap wired under the seat springs. A nice irish spring, or coast soap with 2 holes gently drilled in it can be hung out of the way, under the seat. Parked out in the sun, it makes the truck smell clean and pleasant. Super cheap too.

    That bench frame was bent in the butt drag area. Should you straighten that out and reinforce it with a metal rod like you did for the hog ring install, before the padding and cover go on?

    It’s interesting that prior to the Big Three actually using foam, “horse hair” was a commodity back then? I imagine because it was inexpensive?

    • @cember01
      @cember01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was used in pluming too. Pack it around joints to form a seal. Weird.

    Oh yes fabric stores do sell 100 percent cotton batting. To get that thickness, though, you’d need two layers. My wife’s a quilter. I’ve cringed a few times buying the all cotton batting. Lol

    I have a RED 1950 Chevy truck that I would like to replace the ugly after market bucket seats with an original looking bench.. What color would the bench have been when the truck was new? I'm guessing black or brown. Were they made with leather or vinyl?

    As an amateur, I'll point something out they gloss over (because I'm sure I'm the only person who's ever done this). There is an upper limit to how much you can pull the fabric/vinyl before those hog rings pull out of the vinyl. Tight is good, but too tight is going to tear.

    DAVIN!
    Oh man, I'd damn near kill for that Grand Wagoneer!
    Y'all are cheating on that upholstery job you know - usually, there's a whole lot of wrestlin' around
    with it on the floor, putting your weight on it, then hog ringing.
    Like trying to talk an alligator into climbing in a suitcase, pretty much - and what all that cutting of
    the old rings, and the installing of the new ones with the chintzy pliers they usually give you in the
    kit, leave your hands pretty much crippled and useless for a few days afterwards.
    Anyways, thanks as always for the video and I'm glad your upholstery was easier on you.
    Y'all be safe up there,
