Great video Mark and I couldn’t agree more with your comments on the value of self drive in Kruger…..the ability to stay or go on a sighting as you please is just priceless.
Hey Mark, just spent 5 weeks in the Kruger...amazing trip, you said it...08:25 to 08:35 that happened to me many times LOL. Still got some great content and used the slo-mo of the Canon R5 to the max. Keep up the great work !!!
Mark, that was a fantastic watch. Great to see the difference between auto and manual ISO so well explained. And well timed too - my wife and I are visiting SA next Jan/Feb, and have 8 days scheduled in Kruger!
@MarkDumbleton Thanks Mark. We start at Skukuza, then Satara, Lower Sabie, and back to Satara for 1 night before we return to Johannesburg via the Panorama Route. Really excited now it's getting closer!
@@stevehubbard8459 That will be an excellent trip! Visiting the Panorama route is also a great idea and easily doable on the way back. That is such a beautiful area!
@MarkDumbleton Hope so! We start our visit in Cape Town, and we're driving the Garden Route from there to Port Elizabeth (can't spell the other name 🙃), returning along R62 and the wine country, so it should be a good trip.
Loved the behind the scenes footage in the park Ja I shoot on M + Auto ISO, but have found of late that sometimes I'm just a tad overexposed with certain shots. Especially back in March in Chobe I found that the camera just chose to high an ISO when we had perfect golden morning light. So either I must cap it lower, or switch to Manual ISO. Love Sweni hide, it's one of my favourite hides in the park. Going to Berg-en-Dal for a few nights in November, can't wait!
Thanks for the comment Jackie. Perhaps add a little bit of negative exposure comp in golden light. It will help keep the mood of that light too (I normally shoot at -0.7 exp comp in golden light but all depends on backgrounds etc so it’s tricky). Sweni is great! Enjoy Kruger when you go in November! Magical!
Excellent stuff mark. It was great to see the behind the scenes video. Thanks for taking us on the journey with you….. it’s probably behind the desk for next week !.
Another great video Mark. Agree with @thomashecht71 about your suggestion of using manual ISO in certain situations. It is easy to become complacent when using manual with auto ISO, (thinking it is one less setting to worry about), only to have disappointing results when the subject moves. Learning to slow down and take enough time for test shots to get the appropriate settings for the lighting conditions is going to be part of my strategy moving forward.
Thanks so much Garnet! Thanks for watching! That technique using manual ISO is definitely something to keep in mind for tricky lighting conditions. Appreciate the comment and support as always!
Hi Mark, Great video. Nerves of steel with male lion a few metres away! Could you let me know how you film the LCD on the back of the Z8? Thanks, Jimmy
Thanks so much! I’ve spent so much time with Lions, I don’t ever feel nervous when inside a vehicle. I use a product called the Accsoon Seemo to send a video signal to my iPhone to capture what my camera sees.
Great video again, Mark. Blown-out highlights suck - and it always happens in best situations, right?! I relied on M + Auto ISO a couple of time too many in the past. Your advice with M + manual ISO is gold.
Hi Craig, thanks for watching and for the comment. Sweni hide is awesome, and there were hippos but more towards the far right. I love the 180-600. It’s super versatile and really sharp for a super zoom. That’s a tricky choice whether to get the 100-400 or 180-600 with the 500 pf. Have you got 2 good bodies?
Hi Glyn, yeah I was there mid August. Also quite surprised to see the mist, I’ve seen it a couple times late winter, not common at all. I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video Mark. Just have a question regarding your Heron scene explaining your choice to stick to manual ISO. Would highlight metering have helped there in order to keep auto-iso or do you think it would have then metered on the whitest white instead of the heron white? PS , If i may share a tip that has helped me. On my Z9 i have my fn2 set to Access top item in MY MENU which is my subject detection making it easier to switch between animal and bird quickly.
Thanks for the comment 😊 I tend to prefer full manual in scenes with constant lighting and white birds, and perhaps highlight metering may have helped to achieve a slightly better metering of the scene, and can be used but it’s so difficult getting the camera to meter properly because of the changing backgrounds. Thanks for the tip on the fn button. I’ve since changed mine to make it easier like you suggest 😊

Great video Mark, loved your easy explanation of setting your exposure😊
Thanks so much for the comment. Glad you liked the explanation 😊 thanks for watching!
Love it, really appreciate getting to see behind the scenes 😊😊
Thanks so much! Plenty more of these behind the scenes to come!
Thank you for a great helpful video Mark. Keep well.
My pleasure, thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏🏻
Absolutely love those two shots of the elephants, really great photos!
Thanks so much! Appreciate that a lot!
Love this and can’t wait to see more videos like this.
Thanks so much Kobus! Appreciate it a lot!
Excellent 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 thank you I certainly learnt a thing or two, nice wake up call, moved me from my comfort zone 👍🏼
Good to hear Roger 😊 glad you picked up a few tips in the vid. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for sharing. Interesting to see how you work with the ISO.
Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate the comment. Using ISO in that way makes photography settings so much easier for me to think about.
Nice video very well done keep it up
That means a lot, thanks so much!

I loved the Sweni hide! How do you like the 180-600?
I am considering that or the Z 100-400 since I have the 500pf. No hippos at Sweni?

@@MarkDumbleton I have the Z9 and original Z6 currently (sold my D500). Will upgrade the z6 to z6iii at some point in the future.
@@craigmontour9906 That will be a great combo for sure!
Hi Mark, thanks for this, very educating. When were you in Kruger, interesting to see mist if you were there recently.
Hi Glyn, yeah I was there mid August. Also quite surprised to see the mist, I’ve seen it a couple times late winter, not common at all. I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
Great suggestion to use manual ISO. I have been caught out by light birds over dark backgrounds.
Glad you found that tip useful. It works super well! Thanks so much for watching and for the comment 😊

Hi Mark, what kind of camera pillow are you using?
It’s just a simple beanbag that goes over the door of the vehicle. It’s made by a company here in South Africa called Outdoorphoto.
Aggreed i mess up many pictures, caught in the sightng of animals not been composed and wait...calmness is the answer
Thanks for the comment. Spending time on sightings definitely helps!
You've shot the yellow billed stork with animal detection and the male lion with bird detection...🤦🏻♂
Thanks for pointing that out, I am aware. Everything was still in focus.
