If he plays F13 first before H14, it becomes really hard to see, but I think once he makes the exchange at H14, I think the correct result is to give up the one stone. 5-4 instead of 3-4 is worse technically, but the ostensible benefit is that it puts your opponent into their discomfort zone, and given how the opening went I think it was successfully discomforting.
