Same. I always thought you can't go back and the guards wouldn't break the door down and go after you. I also thought you can't kill them from above either. Usually I just jump to the next building.

The anguish on Joel's face in the remake of the lift scene shows just how tough the thought of losing Ellie had become by that point. She was his daughter. He couldn't lose another one.
It gave me goosebumps when you would lose in that scene and he would scream while they take ellie away. I think that was a worse death for me than when a clicker bites you.

Wow I remember playing the PS3 version at launch and being amazed at the graphics. Amazing how technology keeps improving.

The Tess body thing I think is low poly because ND didn't expect players to want to go back and check on her but knew better for the remaster and remake and touched both up accordingly.
Also, the lighting in the sewers scene on Ellie's face even in the PS4 version was always horrendous looking. To everybody saying part 1 didn't/doesn't need a remake, no. It really did need it. Lighting alone has evolved so much in just 9 years. I'm honestly very happy we got it. Such a story based, cinematic oriented game is best experienced with the highest visual fidelity possible, always.
Then you have scenes like David and Ellie which somehow still hold up beautifully 2 generations later. I actually prefer the denim textures in the original on both their clothes. Fascinating.
Yeeaah I love the last of us a lot but no it really didn't need a remake at all. Especially for 70 dollars without multi-player. SMH

This remake was amazing. Haters can hate and say its not worth $70. They can waste their cash on fortnite skins and MTX on mobile games instead. At the end of the day, this remake is better than 99% of the bullshit everyone else puts out now adays. Look at the Saints Row remake... Imagine it going that way. You wanna complain about a $70 remake we didn't need? That's the one.
I'm 100+ hours into the remake, got my plat at 50. The game is just so damn addicting even after all this time.
@@JesusLittleBear Yup, same idiots saying they can't afford this I GUARANTEE spent $100+ on inconsequential skins in w/e mobile game/F2P they play. I've spent at least $200 on skins in Lost Ark this year, and I probably won't get this because it's a bit too expensive for me. Is that my own fault tho? Absolutely. In the end do I even get nearly as much enjoyment out of those $200 skins as I would have getting this game thinking in hindsight? Absolutely not.
Here’s an idea for a video, you could compare AI behavior between the games. You could set both games to grounded (in Part I’s case you can just set enemies to grounded in custom difficulty) and show off how different enemy encounters behave. For example you could compare the original game’s Stalkers to the remake’s Stalkers.

Due to memory bandwidth, I remembered they say they can only have 8 enemies interacting with you at once. No wonder when I stealth kill enemies at certain areas in Pittsburg, it messes up the enemy appearance and interaction. Sometimes they just stand there like their AI haven't been loaded up yet. Sometimes the next group of enemy don't even load up. I thought it was a glitch or something.
@@awshnap actually they did they were those half runner half clicker type things that you see when your trying to turn on the generator and when your with sam in the sewers and unlike the stalkers you see in the last of us part 2 and remake the og stalkers just ran at you full force every once in awhile running away and ambushing you as soon as you try and go through a door

I loved how the animations looked much more fluid and more visceral than the original, and the reworked lighting, models, and camera work do help alleviate that. It's no longer looked like bootleg Telltale's TWD.

I think it's because in the remake, she looks more like her voice actress Ashley Johnson, just as she did in Part 2. While in the remastered, she (inadvertedly) resembles more Ellen Page.
So people connect more remake Ellie to the sequel than then did with the original.

These are huge improvements and Part I is probably worth it but the original has an undeniable charm to it. All of the emotions it's going for, everything it's trying to evoke in the player, none of that is compromised by the graphics.

What undeniable charm exactly? I think you are simply highlighting the nostalgic effect the original has, which is common with every remake made. Seeing Tess's poorly rendered body does not make me think it evokes an emotion other than me recognizing the remake is indeed a massive improvement.

The quality of graphics and lighting is consistent throughout the remake. In the original PS3 era of ND games, the quality was uneven, some due to being real time vs pre-rendered, and others due to more focus on certain scenes of the games. I m truly amazed by all the PS4 era titles of ND (UC4, LL, TLOU2 and TLOU1, not sure about Crash series) by how much the quality of gameplay and graphics has improved!!
Crash is sadly no longer Naughty Dog's, but still I think Crash 4 is a noteworthy crash game
The section when you're riding through the forest with Tommy was especially a noticeable decline in environmental quality in the original. Obviously other parts of the game demand more attention than a scenario most players are gonna fly by, but like you said, it's the consistency that adds a lot.

After playing the remake and then playing part 2 right after honestly is such a good transition now. It feels like you’re still playing part 1 (I don’t know if that makes sense.)
Like obviously it’s a second game and all but if you don’t think about it, it feels like expansion rather than a separate game.

Probably my favourite gameplay to cutscene transition in the remake is in Left Behind: At the end when Ellie falls down and Riley comes to her, she gets attacked and Ellie runs to kill the runner. The original cuts to black right when she grabs it and starts the cinematic with the throat slitting. In the remake, the camera pans around and starts inmediately with the cinematic, just seamlessly.
Mine is in the University where Joel and Ellie are spotted by the cannibals and duck before being shot. You're just suddenly in gameplay after the duck with no black screen in-between. It's the cleanest transition I've ever seen.

I finished the remake last night. The game is amazing! And that's coming from someone who played the game on PS3 and PS4. Even if I knew what is going to happen (cut scenes), the drama still gets to me. The detailed facial animation I think is the key. Well, with all the new character model, high polygon count, and the ambient lighting (you can see how the light is defused in the environment and on the characters' skin and other objects, is almost life like). I'm about to embark on this game for the second time on new game + :) damn those clickers! :)

I bought the REMAKE and I don't regret my purchase because I still immersed myself in this extraordinary universe with extraordinary graphics.
After playing EVERY edition of the game… it’s insane how well even the ps3 edition looks and plays… The Last Of Us really was next level gaming when it launched… amazing.

One of the best details was making Joel actually look 20 years older from the intro to the main game.
I bought the remake. I played the original once, in 2013. It's been ten years and I forgot so much that it felt like the experience all over again. I was emotionally attached to the characters again. This game is truly remarkable. I am about to start second version for the second time, tonight or tomorrow: what a masterpiece. This is worth buying Sony, alone. There is also Uncharted! Enjoy.

I know this isn't the topic of the video, but I always wondered when Joel and Henry are separated and then Henry and Ellie are chased by Clickers, why Joel shushes Sam when instead they could try to attract the attention of as many Clickers as possible to let Henry and Ellie escape since Joel and Sam are relatively safe behind the gate.

In their defense, I would say I think the enemies in Part I and II react maybe a little too fast with going from alert to aiming and to successfully shooting. It makes sense if they're already alert and searching like in the video. But honestly, I've never really played lower than Survivor so I'm not sure if anything changes by difficulty other than detection speed.
They did great on improving the visuals. But it still plays exacly the same as the original, there are so many missed opportunities to improve the game even more and keep it interesting to all those who played the originals...
@zak No, by definition it is a remake. It changed entire character models, animations, game mechanics etc. A remaster is like a touch-up. Keeping everything the exact same while only upgrading things like resolution and framerate. It may be a loose remake, but it's still a remake.

I was infuriated about the price tag initially, but after watching these comparisons I realized that they built the game from the ground up again. The levels are also more detailed and most of the terrain and architecture was replaced entirely.
The evolution of the graphics is so incredible that the graphics of the remake make the graphics of the original look like a cartoon (more specifically, I would quote a cartoon from game The Wolf Among Us) when, at the time, it was the pinnacle of realism.

Dead Tess in the PS3 game uses a low poly version as it's never supposed to be seen close up. Kinda' a unfair comparison really... Either way, the lighting and render quality in the PS5 remake is beautiful. A huge difference compared to the original PS3 release.

I think the lighting, while lower quality, was more artistically curated, as opposed to going for a straight-up realistic look. Cooler skin tones, with less/no subsurface scattering, make his face creepier IMO.
I thought the thumbnail was clickbait, but no... It wasn't! I'm speechless, I think this makes me consider playing this new version I didn't know that they did change the whole thing up. Impressive!

I think they didn't expect or anticipate people getting back to Tess' body in the original, maybe people weren't meant to so it was never rendered for close up detail, clearly in the remake they amended that mistake.

There were more areas in the OG that expressed better lighting and color than the remake, 6:44 demonstrates this best.
obv. The remake looks better because of a better lighting engine but sometimes older games use of baked lightning and clever tricks manage to look much more realistic.

Now the difference in graphical fidelity between the two is undoubtable, tlouR looks better, however the tech limitations of older games often forces devs to utilizes tricks with what they have to create better visuals. The lightning and shadows of this particular scene are all baked in, meaning they don’t actually exist but are rather a texture applied to the scene, with the addition of a little vfx (the glow on objects directly in the sunlight) none of what you see is the game’s actual lighting system.
So while technologically, the remake is better, this particular scene had better lighting composition and enough old school trickery to create the illusion of a better scene, which the original does in multiple areas. So where the remake relies on the power of it’s engine, the og relies on video game smoke and mirrors and flat-out better art direction to create far better looking environments.
I still prefer the original version. Because a more realistic image, in my opinion, greatly reduces the atmosphere of the game, which is very palpable in the original.The contrast of the cartoon image and the extreme realism of what is happening only further enhances the impression of what is seen. Not to mention the cuteness of a more artistic and vibrant graphics of the original, which more strongly concentrates the atmosphere and the feeling of comfort from it.Thanks to which some parts of the game feel like a dream

Awesome video! I probably won’t play this version for years because I’m an Xbox player and will only get a PS5 when there’s a truly new naughty dog game, but this makes me excited for my eventual next playthrough of TLOU to be this version.

It's crazy watching this now, and remembering thinking "wow this is the greatest looking game I've ever played" (I hadn't played much by that point). I would love a PS5 to experience this game again, seeing it like this makes me feel the awe and wonder I felt playing the game for the first time. Thanks for making this video. It looks even better on PC. And while it uses an INSANE amount of VRAM, I am getting a pretty steady 60fps at 1440p with almost every setting on high/ultra, running on a 3070 and Ryzen 3 3300x. It looks absolutely gorgeous on a decent PC.
It's fascinating how at the time the games release I've always thought "wow, that looks awesome, it possibly can't get much better"... but now here we are. So where will we be in 10 years from here?

The soldier at 0:33 in the original always made me laugh 'cause he looks blazed as hell, kinda sad they changed of the model in the remake haha.

Some parts, I like the lighting and stylization of the original more, some parts I like the new detail and realistic effects of the remake more. Overall, I think it’s pretty objective that part 1 looks better but it doesn’t look better enough to justify existing

I think it does, from a storytelling perspective. The original does feel like it's struggling under the constraints of its time and hardware. The Remake is far more moody and seamless, I think it sells the overwhelming tranquility and and oppressiveness. It's less PS3 era action title-y and more moody. I do think it probably fits the intended vision better, definitely from a cinematic perspective
What you like or dislike shouldnt make the price any lower. The effort going into the remake was insane and they took the time to recreate each cutscene from scratch.
There are some lights in the original that i prefer, even some colors are pretty dark and both them create an obscure atmosphere. For example, the scene were henry and ellie got locked behing the door it's better the original, as well for the scene of ellie vs David.

I wish you could adjust the enemy count in the game. The first play through when you’re exploring is really cool because you don’t know what’s going to happen but going back a second time there are some areas where it’s just nothing going on and it would be cool if you could just fill those areas with enemies to sort of keep some type of action going.
It's called grounded mode plus permadeath.
I guess they didn’t expect people in the original version of the game too go down there and look at Tess body so why make the model look good but I’m glad too see in the remake they put some time into making the Tess model look good.
Personally the only thing I'm not a fan of is the overly muted colors in some scenes for example 7:06. Nevertheless the graphics are a massive upgrade.

Developers who actually care about their community to take time and make a proper remake. I have never played Last Of US but from these clips you can clearly see a huge difference.

If you were to play the original today I doubt the graphics would bother you nearly as much, because you're actually playing the game and just looking at it with a lens of how the graphics look.
Do people seriously not know what LODs are? Using low-poly models with low resolution textures on assets viewed from a distance improves performance without looking any worse, and even looks better often because it prevents flickering.
I always thought Joel's face had a hard time emoting in the original, even though I thought it was fitting for his character. But with the Remake, they were actually able to give his eyes more nuance and you get to see how much of the acting was missing.

It's a really poor example of an obvious oversight and nothing more though, even games on modern gen have these LOD models

It never ceases to amaze me that, when I got the game for PS3 back in the day, I thought to myself: "We have now reached the pinnacle of graphic quality and animation. It will NEVER look better"
Fascinating that, in a 10 year span, we improved graphics making them borderline real and I couldn't be happier that I stand corrected. Damn...
In a game that's literally just about immersing into the overall experience, the remake makes so much sense. The result is a masterpiece at yet another level, affecting me way more than during my first playthrough, even though I knew exactly what would happen next. Far more intense than the original or even the remaster. Had to take a break a few times just to let it sink (e.g. the cutscene at the very end of Lakeside Resort).
For me it's not the Graphics that mattered... IT'S THE STORY AND CHARACTERS. Part 1 is the Best, I don't need a Remaster, Remake or whatever PART 2 is As_ by the way, Part 1 for me has its own conclusion and already had a satisfying ending.
