Great well thought out review Matt. Just throwing my 2 cents in it seems that for a beginner firewood guy it's a pretty good system to use and get on to. I've used the hex chain file on a round RS profile chain and it will convert it over a few sharpens. I don't know if you've heard of square ground profile.( it's similar to Hexa is profile) It's a rabbit hole to go down but if you do a lot of fire wood like I do it's probably 30% or more faster than round profile and has changed my world in combo with a barker box and oil air filter. Porting saws is a whole other thing which turns a saw into a beast, however the advice I've received is to leave this for loggers felling trees... if you're just burning fuel making fire wood it may not be worth it, but for some one like you where time is money it may be an idea. Cheers Tom from Wanaka NZ.

Hi thanks for your comment. Yeah I have heard of square ground files never tried it myself though. Stock saws work fine for me at the moment. I will venture into ported saws at some point but not at the moment. I have done a muffler mod and advanced the timing on My 150T that made the saw run better. Nothing more than that for now though. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. I really appreciate it.

Yeah can still get better results hand filing a stock chain. The hexa does pull better initially though. Really worth a try! Thanks for your comment.

Instead of everyone being “bought by the fallacy” of Stihl Hexa, why not just change a standard Stihl to square grind like the Yanks use? It’s faster cutting (fact!!) and it’s easier once ground, to get back sharp.
    Interested in your thoughts

Yes you could do that for sure. That's how it's always been done. I guess Stihl are jumping on the band wagon with their own. Good that it comes in an easy kit though.

@jbss7382 I think the idea here is to put the benefit of square ground chain into as many hands as possible, but retain the simplicity of regular round filing. While square ground is tip-top, fast and my preferred option in clean wood, get your angles wrong, hit a pipe full of mud (like my trees), or just drop the bar tip into the dirt, it's dull in an instant. The idea of having a purpose-built file dulls the skillset a little, but more users are likely to pick this up than go through the effort to learn proper square filing techniques. And if you can buy it all in a kit, so much the better for the usual lazy man....

Great video I have been running the Hexa on my 462 for two weeks now just to process firewood. The upgrade kit is the best deal, I am unsure if I will buy anymore when compared to the price of the Stihl RS chain. I think for a novice it's easier to file so perhaps Stihl should do it in a .325 option for smaller saws and aim it at the new chainsaw user?

Or you could look up West Coast saws on TH-cam and they teach you how to square file
Yanks have been doing it for years. Once you get the hang of it; it’s piss easy. Enjoy

That's great Patrick. Good idea that going on a .325! The cost is certainly something to weigh up.
