    The big problem of Nigeria is corruption. Ethiopia is more nationalist and patriot than other country of Africa. Addis look like a city of Asia than Africa city.

    The Ethiopia's $475m Trains is a MRT light rail system; while Nigeria's $12b Trains is a
    standard gauge railway. You are comparing apple with orange.

      Stop encouraging her. The two system are different. LRT system moved people between places within a home area. Rail train system facilities more and faster economic activities between home, regional and oversea economities which increase productivities at home and the prospect of employment and happiness. Criticism is good but intelligent criticism is better.

Just like a lot of Western Leaders we are forced to choose but their criminality and psychopathic urges are hidden from us by the media elite networks ans corrupt police forces and judiciary. Yeah the 50hz group wired Harare-Gweru but was it USA financed? (probably not). It is important the masses identify where the corruption is so they can rout it and send these so called elites running for their miserable lives.

      The Addis Ababa Light Rail (የአዲስ አበባ ቀላል ባቡር) was in fact contracted by the China Railway Group Ltd. (中國中鐵股份有限公司) and it was funded by China Exim Bank (中國進出口銀行). It is even operated by Shenzhen Metro (深圳地鐵). As a matter of fact the light rail was strategically routed from Addis Ababa city center to the Chinese Industrial Area (i.e. Eastern Industrial Zone 東方工業園) located in Oromia (ኦሮሚያ ክልል). So don’t give Ethiopia so much credit.
      But I am sure the money went to exactly that project while in Nigeria the money was probably siphoned off into pockets. And the Nigerian Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Doyin Okùpè was abrasive and defensive about his demeanor and response. That is telltale signs the money was misappropriate into their pocket. That would explain the used hand-me-down trains. They heard $12 billion was coming their way, so they cut corners so they can have money to chop at the end. Kleptocracy is too much. They will leave the citizen at the mercy of debt to other nations, but will already have taken cuts to by mansion for themselves. There should be a Dep’t of Transparency. Public officials need their bank account, every so often, audited. And the EU (including Switzerland) and the US need to stop hosting their money. This is absurd.

    The Ethiopian light rail system was also constructed with a loan from Chinese financial institutions. Although the local authorities had oversight, engineering and construction was done by Chinese construction firms. That being said, some level of corruption exists in both countries, however, after seeing the $12billion bill Nigeria is handed for that project, I can see the difference in the degree of corruption. Perhaps the Nigerian authorities fell for the "Nigerian Prince Scam" emails and let down tax payers.

  • @gacaptain

    Whoa! I usually agree with you Adeola Fayehun but you are waay off comparing the price of a 34 km commuter light rail system in the capital of Ethiopia to the price of a 1400 km heavy rail road stretching the entire coastal length of Nigeria.
    What are you thinking?
    Also, you're too caught up in how cute and modern looking the light rail system is. The ugly heavy rail system is actually capable of carrying far more people. Although they do need to get newer trains.
    I would love to see Nigerians building their own rail road and they are doing much of the work on the commuter train construction in Lagos which is more along the same size as the Ethiopian rail road you were referring to.
    It, however, is heavy rail not light rail. This is actually an advantage. Many people now a days mistakenly think light rail is more modern and sophisticated but light rail only means it's smaller. Major systems like those in New York City, London and Paris all mostly use heavy rail to transport because it can handle longer lines of larger cars moving faster.
    Now there is a difference between old fashioned diesel heavy trains like the one you criticised in Nigeria and electric heavy rail like used by the London tube or Japanese bullet trains.
    Fortunately the heavy rail public transportation trains in Lagos are supposed to be electric according to the Engineer whom said the line would have it's own power plant to avoid power outages frequently taking place in Lagos.

    • @gacaptain
      @gacaptain 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gacaptain The guy you were interrogating in the interview obviously didn't know much on the subject or else he would have told you the same as I posted above instead of getting angry and saying they couldn't afford new trains. LOL.
      Furthermore he should have said that Nigeria needs to build up it's exports in order to be able to afford exporting such expensive items.
      It would also save Nigeria alot of money and provide alot of jobs if it were able to build up and maintain more of it's own infrastructure but it lacks the technical know how and skill, shops and other facilities necessary for that.
      The bright side is that hundreds if not thousands of Nigerians that were employed to help the Chinese build what's gone up thus far now have enough skill that I could fore see allowing Nigerians to one day soon be able to construct rail roads on their own with out help from the Chinese.

    Adeola, your report is very misleading. Ethiopia spent $475million for 32Km of light rail with a design speed of 80Km/h. Nigeria will be spending $12bn for 1,385 kilometers in one-way mileage and a design speed of 120 km/h. Any right thinking individual will see the clear difference between the two; and you are the journalist, you should have done your homework.
    Secondly, contrary to your report, China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group began construction in January 2012 under a contract signed in June 2009 for the Ethiopian project, China’s Export-Import Bank provided loans to cover 85% of the $475m cost. Another point, light rail is the railway tecnology not the railcar. What I see here is cheap propaganda, it pays to get your facts right.

    Adeola, I am trying to understand your report on the trains. Is the $ 12 billion to build the light trains, it says along Nigeria's coast? If that's the case, it's insane. But it seems a it too much. By the way, I am Ethiopian and don't think that the light-rail in Addis was totally overseen by the Ethiopian government. The Chinese were involved. But we are developing capacity in train engineering and hopefully soon we will be able to oversee such big projects.

    • @holmes2him
      @holmes2him 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awash Jember let me throw more light on this becos her report is very misleading. Ethiopia spent $475million for 32Km of light rail with a design speed of 80Km/h. Nigeria will be spending $12bn for 1,385 kilometers in one-way mileage and a design speed of 120 km/h. There a great deal of difference between the 2 projects and there is no basis for comparison. Secondly, contrary to her report, China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group began construction in January 2012 under a contract signed in June 2009 for the Ethiopian project, China’s Export-Import Bank provided loans to cover 85% of the $475m cost. Another point, light rail is the railway tecnology not the railcar. What I see here is cheap propaganda to discredit the Nigerian Govt.

      Ubong Uman
      Ubong Uman I think your “fact” finding mission is off track and is deliberately ignoring the fact that Nigeria is a high level corruption country. Resources poor Ethiopia is doing great and is registering impressive growth compared to resources rich (oil producing) countries like Nigeria. Just look what projects are being undertaken in Ethiopia. Most of these projects are designed to take the country to a mid level income country in the near future.. and some of the projects are are grand not only by African standards but of the world. I think African countries like Nigeria should have done more for the rich resources they have.
      Off topic…I think this lady is Adeola is very sexy. I must say she is the only Nigerian lady that takes my eyes off the sexy Ethiopian chicks.

    Our current programme seeks to replace old trains with new SA manufactured ones ( but in reality we bought them in Europe). It's underway and will cost $US16 bln.
    We could gain more from local manufacturing and innovation, and perhaps export our trains to Naija for a better price.

    Nigeria has MORE than enough revenue to pay for their own infrastructure projects. As she said, lots of money for presidential jets and the military but nothing for the people. It is appalling that Lagos, Abuja and other citiesdo not have modern rapid transit systems. Ethiopia didn't have the capital yet and needed a helping hand.

How can African "leaders" even pretend that they are on a path to modernization when they don't manufacture steel...steel is the backbone of a nation state...its needed for construction of...buildings...public works projects...shipbuilding...machinery...automobile manufacturing...etc...etc...other than buying BMW and Mercedes automobiles, what the hell have African "leaders" been doing for the last 40-50yrs since independence?

    I follow infrastructure development projects in India and around the world. So, I came across this video when I was watching a video about new Ethiopia and Djibouti railway line. I don't know why this TV presenter is comparing a tram to actual railway line. And shouting and almost insulting Nigerian efforts. Can someone explain what's with this? 12 billion $ is a lot of money for 120kmph at grade train. But this comparison is complete bull sh*t.

    Adeola, abegi quit comparing apples with oranges. For its $12 billion, Nigeria is building a multi-year, multi-phase nationwide standard gauge rail system (of which the Abuja-Kaduna line is merely the first project, with Lagos-Ibadan to come on stream next), while the Ethiopia project is merely a metropolitan light rail project. Furthermore, the efficacy of rail projects is not determined by how “pretty” the trains or stations look. SMDH
