I had abandoned my hp computer which I bought in 2010 and after less than a year usage, it started having overheating issues. Yesterday , just out of curiosity I was searching on the internet and came across your video. I followed everything step by step, took out the fan, cleaned the cpu, added thermal paste and re-assemble. After this, my computer came back to life. Before, after booting, it would run for few minutes, heat up really fast and shut down. Now its working pretty good. Thanks so very much for your video, its quite inspiring.
What a great video. I had to replace fan on my wife's DV4-1400 and this video was invaluable. Watched twice and made a step-by-step checklist. Followed your every step and it worked perfectly. Could not have done it without you. Thanks again.
Gotta love TH-cam DIY videos. My HP Pavilion DV4 started shutting down. The error message said it had shut down due to overheating popped up when I restarted it. I googled the model and error message. The search led me here. With the aid of this video I was able to disassemble, clean, repaste (I used Arctic M-4 thermal compound) and reassemble my PC. Thanks DIY Tech this video was exactly what I needed to make this tear-down and repair. Now I think I'll bump up the RAM from 4 Gig to 8 Gig if it will handle it. Maybe get another 5 years service out of it.
I've also been taking things apart for a long time, I do my own automotive work, but I don't know much about computers. My computer is 3 years old and it was running a little warmer and I wanted to take care of it. I bought the same thermal paste and went to work per your video and now my DV4 is running cooler than ever! It was easier than I thought, it took me and hour and half, but if I had to do it again I could do it in half the time. Thanks for the vid!
Thank you Hector, the video was very helpful. I was using it to clean my wife's laptop and since you forgot twice the screws, I would recommend to add a small comment on the video on minute 35 and 40 so those who watch it pause for second. Nether the less thank you a lot for nice review!
just wanted to thank you, watched your vid twice, got thermal paste and air. well it was 2 hours for me to finish, but now my dv4 purrs at an idle. no more high speed fan and shutting down after 45 min or whenever. i did miss the part about not pulling the c.com battery. but again thank you.
Thank you so much! I've had this laptop for about 4 years, and it's been overheating like crazy! I don't have much money to fix it, but with your help, I just did it myself! Now the laptop runs smooth, and fast. It's wonderful! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I really appreciate it.
Thank you so much for this video! I did my repair along with you, having to pause several times because you clearly know what you're doing with how fast you go! When you got to the re-assembly part I started mentally shouting, "THE LID SWITCH, THE LID SWITCH!". I was relieved to see you caught yourself before putting the lid back on and trying to boot the machine. Also, I really like your organization method, and I'm going to go buy one tomorrow for my next repair. Cheers!
A coworker bought a new laptop to replace their 'broken' DV4 because it overheated. I asked them if I could have it, they said yes. I bought a replacement fan for $4. Combine that with this video, and Boom, free working laptop. Thanks a ton!
Thanks a lot.. it costs around 2500 bucks in India..I solved my hp pavilion's overheating problem by watching your video.. Loved the sound of screws dropping into the bin :)
Why am I watching this? I don't even need to clean my laptop fans. Probably because you're very good at talking while you work and good at explaining what you're doing.
I've sen lots of disassemble videos but this one is the best, it teaches some good practices and how to be organized and it should save a lot of time and headaches, so thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge and the time put into it.
This is probably one of the best video and your commentary is so precise and to the point. I loved the video and it helped me to open up my HP Laptop. You are really organized the way you work. Great Stuff and God Bless you for sharing this vid.
one thing that would make a long video better is to constantly give other opinions and thoughts about upgrades to a particular unit you're working on while your working.
Thank you so much. Your video guide helped me fix my gf's dv4. I look forward to seeing more of your videos, Macbooks perhaps? Cheers from the Gold Coast, Australia
i want to thank you for this very useful video. Even when i've assembled my own desktop computer for many years, i didn't had a clue how to repair a notebook (only the basics, keyboard and ram mostly) Thanks to this video i could fix the old DV4 that was laying around the house, with that overheating problem. The only sugestion i could make, is that you could use a different camera angle, slightly more elevated. Thanks again, and greetings from the other side of the planet!
Very helpful video! I'm preparing to do this to my old DV4 laptop from 2009 to get it working as a garage computer again. Your video helps greatly to know what I'll run into along the way. Thank you!
I did it successfully with your help! It's running smoothly just as it used to before it started overheating. I had to go back and open it up a couple of times though. First, the DC power cable obstructed the battery release mechanism. once i fixed that I forgot to plug in the keyboard.. Everything else went fabulously! Thanks!
who else is doing this "how to" a couple months shy of 2020? **crickets*** thanks for helping me through a successful repair. my newer laptop met an early demise recently after some liquid seeped in under the memory slot and short circuited it & i figured i might as well try my hand at breathing new life into this. there was a literally dust bunny jammed into the fan vent :/ why oh why are laptop fans not designed with easier access, could have been a five minute fix. great video tho! luckily i'm a nerd for puzzles too.
Awesome video, I can't thank you enough for this walkthrough. After cleaning out my dv4-2145 though, I found it was still running hot. I even went through the whole disassembly/reassembly process again to drill ventilation holes below the fan and still find that it runs hot. This is my second HP with overheating problems, I plan on going with another brand in the future.
thank you so much for the video, was so helpful! i know it sound crazy but i did it with you, and when you forgot the power switch i was talking with you like "you are forgetting the switch, put it now!"
Thanks for this video!. I've followed you step by step and I did the same with my laptop. It's not overheating anymore. The only thing is that I have 2 screws that haven't been put but that's nothing... Thanks again!.
How can I thank you more man, you've done a huge favor for me...........I might even enjoy doing it, first go get some right tools to manage it on the right way..... Thank you very much for your time!!!
Hi David, well if it was working fine prior to you dismantling this then I would say that you might have not completely plugged in the hard disk, or there is something obstructing those contacts where the disc plugs into the mother board. Now I can't remember if this model the hard disc seats directly onto the boar or if there is a cable that connects it to the motherboard??? I think it seats direct. Take some compressed air and blow out those contacts and let us know!
Brain, This is a very good video that give very clear steps to disassemble and assemble hp dv4. I had a problem with power adapter pin. I opened the laptop and soldered a broken wire , forth thin wire on the pin and assembled the laptop back. After assembly, there is no screen display. I double checked the display connector it was connected securely. Any idea what might have gone wrong?
Very nice video, my uncle gave me one of these computers without a hard drive. The battery is almost dead as well. I heard these computers are known for overheating and draining the battery very rapidly. I guess cleaning the cooling system is a good way to start, but I'm starting to think that maybe investing on another computer instead of this one is a smarter idea. Learned a lot from your video, thanks.
Thanks for the update. Sometimes it can take a little bit for it to adhere, although I have never heard of machine having to sit for quite so long. Make sure your fan is running properly. Again, thanks for the comment and update!
Very helpful video for cleaning your personal laptop. I have a HP Pavilion dv4 and after watching this tutorial video, i think i can clean open and remove filled up dust from inside. Ofcourse i'll have to be super careful and double check everything while i do it and undo it.
Thanks a lot! Exellent video. If I could suggest anything, I'd say do put an extra camera so we could see some screws and lock in detail. Anyway, great video :D
This video was very helpful! took it all apart and put it back together at a slow pace to make sure everything was done correctly. However when i turned the computer on. the normal LED lights turned on, the fan spun up. however, the screen was blank and the Caps and Num lock blinked twice, paused and blinked twice again etc. I did some research and it seems as if its a BIOS error or something? how can i fix this? I really need some help considering this isnt my computer. Any recommendations?
Super Great Video. Thanks a million. Its guys like you that make TH-cam so great. I have a DV4-1430us and the fan has been super loud compared to when I got it. Should I look at replacing it since I have it open just for preventive maintenance. I would hate to have to do this disassembly twice.
Not sure what you mean here, the HD is over there and those can run hot. Keeping the machine cool by following this procedure is your best bet. Good luck!
I really, truly, believe in wrist straps on the work bench top, along with a full anti-static work surface mat! Especially in any climate/season where the humidity dips below 45%! Mats run less than $30 and straps are about $1.
+Patrick Patrick Yes, in Arizona where the humidity routinely is below 38% I'm a Van de Graaff generator. I managed to destroy an electronic time card reader with a spark and it was fully enclosed...Except for that one little metal part. It is good to be ESD safe.
X-15 works or Spectra Cool is good too. Order from Ebay or Amazon. Have not done one of those, but I am sure one will walk through the door! Thanks for commenting!
Well, the dust/lint builds up are the culprits for the laptop being overheating...... I did the same thing and apparently, the laptop that I found and went through the cleaning. I noticed the builds up on vent register that results of overheating in which it results lacks of air flow. when I was done with that, it works as the air flow through. Thanks for the tutorials!
Dear Brian, Great video! I followed it complete to disassemble, clean the fan and assemble again my HP DV4. I check several times all the connectors and cables inside the laptop to verify if they are correctly connected. The problem is now that the laptop do not power on. No led blinking or fan spinning or anything. Please help me to recover my laptop working again. Best regards and thanks in advance.
I loved the video and my HP Pavilion dv4 is having the same cooling problem and the fan runs very loud. I did everything that was done in the video but my pc still overheats if left on for more than 45 minutes. Should I just consider purchasing a new laptop at this point? It has been this way since the day I bought it and I have kept good care of it so I know it is not operator error. When I sent it in to both HP and Best Buy to have it repaired they said they fixed it but nothing was change :/
That cover is just to protect the electronics and the RF connector, your laptop will still work but you run the risk to scratching something. Do not close it with a duct tape, as it need air circulation (My laptop heats in that area), may be cover it with something till you get the part. Not sure about ParadiseTech (thanks for the video) but there are few who buy/sell used parts. Just search for your laptop model you may run into their add.
Never had my DV4 shut down from overheating but it gets HOT and runs poorly. I have had it since it was new and a few years ago put it in a box when I inherited a nicer all-in-one. Dug it out a few days ago and decided to try and bring it back from the dead. Yep, still overheating. Curious I started searching and found your video. When I saw all the parts I could break trying to clean it I took it straight to a guy like you who does this kindof thing for a living.
Mitchell, did you try to reseat the CPU? Meaning remove it completely, then reseat it into its slot? Also make sure your RAM is seated properly. If the machine starts sometimes that is a good indication that is may be something else. Although it could still be your motherboard. Let me know. Thanks!
Hey great video i just did this to fix the same issue.. first time dissambling a laptop.. went good.. sound it good. no loud fan.. but im getting an error about wireless module not found or not connected.. thus getting no wireless.. i connected the two wireless prongs in the back of the laptop.. and made sure they were nice and snug.. but im still getting that problem.. any idea what it could be? what i missed. help much appreciated.
Thats funny LGHPSD. Yeah, I have had some people question why I don't remove my mistakes, and my response to that is, well can't we learn from others mistakes. Sometimes that is the most valuable part of the video! Thanks for commenting!
have you tried re-seating the ram, normally if lights flash, or you've no screen or something its cos the ram isnt in properly, some laptops will show a warning on the screen, some wont even turn on without the ram, so check that its correctly seated
What can I do when one of the REALLY tiny screws is stripped? I was trying to open up my computer to clean it out but I can't get the keyboard out (for one) and I have a stripped screw where the optical drive would be. (Like the ones at 7:24)
I thank Carly Floriona for her leadership in leading Compaq Computer engineers in the design, adopted by HP, after the merger, for all the easy R&R of all parts on Servers, lap tops, and desktops. HP had done some things, to ease our repair work, but Compaq's ideas were an added bonus for all of us technicians!
Great video...My problem now is that I dropped the box of screws. I have the computer taken apart and am ready to put it back together and am a little overwhelmed. Can you somehow list the screws and their locations, maybe send a picture? I messed up. Thanks
Very Nice Video Brian.. Learned a lot I do have HP Pavilion dv4 and it has cooling fan and broken screen issue, I think now I can go ahead and fix it. :) Thanks
hey thre, i also hav a dv4 laptop nd its overheatin all da time i can't do this tuitoral myself so i wanted to know that how much will it take for cleanin the fan!!
I have a dv4 same one as the one your working with. Do you think that you can fix the hinges everything is ok but yesterday my dad poped log stick out of the screen do ou think you can fix it I live in Naples Florida
I actually studied Communications in college. I tested out of many of the Computer Science classes and I wanted to work in TV so I studied Comms. My first job out of college was at a TV station, as a TECH! :b
May be my question is a bit out of line but I'd really appreciate to get it answered. In the video the hard drive is actually covered with a black color come plastic thingy (I own same model). My question is how important is that thingy as by mistake I broke it. What is that thingy called and where can I get it (eBay, Amazon, Not possible)? Thanks.
Great Video. It helped me solve my overheating problem. Though the process was complicated. I got touch-pad problem with my HP dv4; single or double click doesn't work but right button works fine. Please suggest. Thanks again for the Video.
While you plug in keyboard to mother board, you would notice a small white plug coming from touch pad to mother board. That belt would be very sensitive, try to pull out and re insert it. Your problems seems to be due to poor connection.
Brian I just bought a used Toshiba Laptop.. it has a slot for a 2nd hard drive. Ideally l would like to buy a small SSD to run my O/S n a few other programs and leave the original conventional HD onboard to serve in a storage only role. Will I have any compatibility issues doing this? Sorry 1st dip into SSD world. I wasn't sure if computer could only house 1 set of instructions for HDs.. if so they would both need to be of the same type.
Thanks so much Brian--very clear. I only got confused at the removal of the keyboard ribbon cable. Perhaps a second camera angle to show the horizonal "push out" move of the tabs. Otherwise great--I even noticed your HD underscrew mistake and one other. But thank you thank you thank you. My roomie's computer is working again.

Thanks for sharing, I was able to fix my computer by following the steps you show.

Good luck!

If it weren't for your tutorial I would never have cleaned my laptop. Thank you!!
thanx fr uploading....very useful video....jst took two and half hrs fr my DV4.....
it was the third screw under the hard drive that he missed on the first go-round. I was wondering if he'd remember it. :)
really well done.
thank you for the reply. I actually figured it out. I took out the CMOS battery and kept it back after half an hour. It fixed.

Is it possible to open just the back cover and use compressed air to bow on the cpu fan? I am really not pro to disassemble laptop like you are doing.
Can you also make a video specifically on Hinge repair for dv4 1133tx?
Glad I mesmerized and entertained you! :) I love to hear this kind of thing. Thanks!
have you tried re-seating the ram, normally if lights flash, or you've no screen or something its cos the ram isnt in properly, some laptops will show a warning on the screen, some wont even turn on without the ram, so check that its correctly seated
What can I do when one of the REALLY tiny screws is stripped? I was trying to open up my computer to clean it out but I can't get the keyboard out (for one) and I have a stripped screw where the optical drive would be. (Like the ones at 7:24)
Nice video. I was watching it on my HP DV4. :-) You seemed to have an extra screw left over at the end. Where was that supposed to have gone?
I thank Carly Floriona for her leadership in leading Compaq Computer engineers in the design, adopted by HP, after the merger, for all the easy R&R of all parts on Servers, lap tops, and desktops. HP had done some things, to ease our repair work, but Compaq's ideas were an added bonus for all of us technicians!
Great video...My problem now is that I dropped the box of screws. I have the computer taken apart and am ready to put it back together and am a little overwhelmed. Can you somehow list the screws and their locations, maybe send a picture? I messed up. Thanks
This is useful... I have a DV4 I bought used, I have been using if for over 1 1/2 and it is just starting to over heat... Thanks...
Very Nice Video Brian.. Learned a lot I do have HP Pavilion dv4 and it has cooling fan and broken screen issue, I think now I can go ahead and fix it. :) Thanks

Thanks for this vid!!! Thought I need a new dv4, it work perfectly now!!!
Good luck and let me us know how it comes out!
Do you use any anti-static? If so
What kind or which one do you recommend thanks
i have a hp DM4 and its its not over heatting but its getting hot and loud near the pc fan will this work for me are the models simulare ?
@Hector Chazari - Thanks Hector!
Thank you. Great video, it was very helpful. My computer is running much faster, quieter, and doesn't over heat.
My roomie's computer is working again.
hey is the dv4 fan is compatible with the hp dv6000? or is the 6000 too big??
I was thinking of trying a used cpu if I'm going to take it apart again
Do you think it could be that?
