You get the Hollowslayer from the Curse-rotted Greatwood because they stuffed all kinds of curses in there, and undeath is a curse that Lucatiel fell victim to, becoming hollow. Somehow, her soul or even her body got in there, and that's why we can get her weapon. If you look at the Greatwood's soul, you can see it is made with numerous, smaller souls. Lucatiel was probably one of them, unfortunately.
It's also important to remember that we find Lucatiel's set in the Undead Settlement as well, so she definitely has some ties to the area. As for the connection with the tree, I don't know. Could they have literally thrown the sword into the tree as well, with the transposed one we get being a recreation? Or maybe the name "Lucatiel of Mirrah" was cursed by the Undead for her hollow-slaying rampage, so that was also one of the "curses" within the tree? I don't know. Then there's the mystery of the spear that is transposed from the same soul, too...
I think as you mentioned that it's because its's the Hollowslayer sword, so i think that once she became hollowed either she movedto live in the undead settlement or some random undead found her stuff and got it back to the settlement, they realized the sword was a curse, but for them, since they are undead and destined to become hollows. So they threw it in the greatwood along with many other cursed items like the transposing item for ludleth.
Also since the armor wasn't cursed, they left it in the settlement. This also suggests that they didn't outright threw her in the tree, she or the undead who found her stuff.

The reason the Hollowslayer Greatsword is transposed from the Curse-rotted Greatwood is because it was put into the Greatwood, along with other things the undead feared.
I wish that the Firelink Greatsword could switch between the classes you see the Soul of Cinder use. Its still cool I guess though.

The hollows of the Undead Settlement stuffed a bunch of “curses” into the Greatwood, hence it’s name. That’s why Arstor’s Spear and the Hollowslayer Greatsword come from the soul.

I just wish they had the Princes swords combine mechanic with the Pontiff swords. Combine the Sword of Judgement and the Profaned Greatsword and you get Twin swords where you usually have the Sword of judgement with normal moveset equiped but two handing makes you equip the Greatsword in your offhand and gives you a moveset similar to Sulyvahn. I think it would be pretty cool.

I found out you can parry the two scythe attacks. You just have to parry the actual scythe not the magic support one. Also... The Scythe op? So what is the Dark sword? Or the Rapier? Or the Crow Talons? No seriously the talons refined at +10 with luck build and Carthus rouge can easily one shot someone with the weapon art.

22:18 i think its because the hollows of the undead settlement were scared of this weapon, and the Cursed Greatwood was their local deity, so they let the Greatwood consume it to protect it from themselves.

About why Lucatiel's sword is there...
What if her brother was a mound maker? That would actually explain a lot!
I always thought that it was there because the Rotten Greatwood was used to store the horrors and monsters the settlement faced. It even states on the Soul of the boss that it was used to seal curses. Maybe the Hollowslayer-wielding knight attacked the settlement, and after his death, the sword was sealed inside to prevent anyone else from getting to it, and the weapon's curse seeped into the soul of the tree, explaining its unique appearance as a soul item. As far as Lucatiel is concerned, her successors to the blade were probably among those who wielded it against the settlement.
Its Lucatiel who is in that Tree she became hollow in Dark Souls 2 after you finished her quest line and all undeaths are in the greatwood because there wasn't enough place in the settlement she got in there too. You can read that she became hollow in her mask you get from the Birds.

Mr Cervas Zeffer my fav is the claymore, I just love this weapon so much because I’m really into STR FTH builds. Does AMAZING dmg when heavy infused with 40STR buffed with DMB at 60FTH. Love it to bits.

I feel like the drake blood greatsword is slept on a lot. It has both lightning and fire damage so you can damage both phases of the nameless king. It’s overall a good investment, not the best but it is serviceable in PvE and PvP.
With the right build, I've been able to pump out a higher damage count than any other weapon I've used.

The inhabitants of the undead settlement placed cursed items inside of a spirit tree to protect themselves from the curses. One of those items was the Hollow Slayer GS. It makes sense that the denizens of the undead settlement would fear it as they are all hollows. Eventually the spirit tree was unable to contain the curses and was overwhelmed and became the Curse-rotted Greatwood.

That's what PvP feels like.
The reason the hollow slayer great sword is found in the curse rotted great wood is because the great wood is made of hollow souls. as the name implies the cure rotted the great tree and made an unrest. the sword is found as one of those souls could be lucatiels and as we've seen it connects to the vertebra shackle being how you get the lucatiel mask. This not only shows the connection of dark souls 2 with the franchise but it gives more depth to the idea that lucatiel's brother who goes hollow invades you as he is now as we can presume a mound maker that we slay and at the end of the lucatiel quest line we can clearly see that lucatiel doesn't escape the curse. So that is why It is found inside of the curse rotten great wood. (damn I feel like Vatii Vidya please like and share this comment with him cya hope I helped bye.)

The Northern Regalia in DeS is a nod to an obscure early 80s cartoon called Blackstar, which had a very powerful magic sword split into left and right halves. The hero had the Star Sword, the villain had the Power Sword, and if you combined the two you got the Power Star. The respective weapons in DeS look exactly like the ones in the cartoon.

It could just be that the magic has very slowly been worn down. We have no idea how many times the bonfire has been kindled again by a hollow, but judging by how many Fire Keepers there are in hub area, I'm guessing it's a few thousand times. So, the sword loses VERY little magic over time, but it still loses it.
The ringed city DLC has a spell to cast the moonlight greatsword, and I would assume it is the real thing.

The reason the hollowslayer great sword is found within the tree is the same reason the spear was, it is said that the hollows of the undead settlement buried the things they feared within the tree which is what caused the curse rotting in the first place. So it’s easy to see why it is found within the tree, hollows fear it so they placed it within the tree, maybe to hide it maybe to destroy it maybe to cure it we don’t know.
Saying that the greatsword originates from Scotland is a very broad statement to make and is not really true.
Classificating medieval and renaissance swords is extremely difficult.
Historically people would only refer to swords as... Swords. They would call them longswords if they were longer than previously used types if sword. Then there are also some more specific terms that were also used.
Today we do not compare one sword to another like back in the days, but we look at swords as a whole. So our classification is far different that historically. Because they just did not give a fuck about it back in the days.
German fighting manuals would also use long sword and short sword for the style of fighting and not for the sword itself.
Fighting with the long sword would mean fighting with a two handed sword with having both hands at the grip.
Fighting with the short sword would mean grabbing a two handed sword an the blade to navigate the tip into gaps of armor.
That technique is also called half-swording these days.
Also, swords evolved very fluently into each other. It wasn't like "boom! New kind of sword arrives."
They got continiously longer, because of improvements in armor and became more and more specialized for a certain task.
All I want to say here: Classification of sword is extremely difficult and almost impossible to do perfectly because of the factors stated above. You cannot draw clear lines and say what originated where.
And Dark Souls does an especially bad job at it.
The Claymore however is a special version of sword that did come from Scotland and was not really used elsewhere that much.
But two handed swords as are found in the "Greatsword class" in Dark Souls are mainly types that you would find in the European heartland.

The Claymore is so underrated. It scales well, has good damage and a perfect attack speed that lets you hit with it far more often than other weapons. It's moveset isn't the most flashy but it's very practical and can deal with almost any situation.

Mirrah is the sunless realm, if you remember lucatiels brother going mad and attacking you in ds2.
Very similar to the mad spirits of the mound makers. Plus the sunless armour set comes from Hodricks daughter. Hodrick also wields the sunless shield which is the Mirrah shield. The mound makers/Mirrah knights sealed their mad cursed away in the greatwood but it corrupted them all into madness.
22:34 the description for the Curse Rotted Greatwood Soul is that it absorbed the curse and became corrupted. Since all humanity is descended from the Furtive Pygmy and the Dark Soul, maybe Hollowing is just the Soul leaving the body a husk again and rejoining the Dark Soul, the "curse" of humanity. A portion of Lucatiels soul remained a part of the Curse and was absorbed by the Greatwood? Just kinda tossing that out there, I mean the other Lord Souls managed to persist in different forms and apparently canon, Lucatiel "survived" in a way by being remembered.
You get Hollowslayer from the tree because if you follow Lucatiel's questline she doesn't go fully hollow, and the fact that her blade was writhing the tree implies that she traveled to the Undead Settlement only to be killed by the hollows there and her sword given to the tree as they saw it as cursed. Lucatiel likely is one of the corpses that are found throughout the settlement.
There’s a pretty obvious reason why the Executioner GS can’t thrust. It doesn’t have a tip/point to thrust with. It’s actually a real, historical sword that was used for beheadings. Supposedly, it was more dignified than an axe because you could be executed while kneeling upright instead of face down.

Historically speaking "great swords" do not originate from Scotland, as a matter of fact the term "great sword" is not a historical term at all but rather a fantasy one. Claymores are a specific type of Scottish swords but do not represent what you would call "great swords" as a whole, several countries over the renaissance have developed just large two handed swords, such as the Spanish Montante, Italian Spadone, German Zweihander, etc.

Twin Prince’s Greatsword is my favorite weapon in all of Dark Souls.
The undead settlement is a settlement of hollows, so it makes sense that something that holds the fears that hollows have would be hidden away in the cursed rotted great wood. The cursed rotted great wood is also where they hid away other things the generally didn’t like.

the firelink greatsword is particularly good on low level pvp invasions. I believe the reason is: the weapon art gives +80 fire damage, which on a 100+ fire damage weapon is great when players don't have elemental resistances too high. It usually takes 3 hits to kill most players, except twinks who do pvp with the prisoner chain and 1000+ hp.

CLAYMORE is for me the BEST, can be infused, buffed and upgraded, good range, good stacking, pass the whole game with this weapon.
I think claymore is on the same place as gael's and hollowslayer
Am I the only one that weilds greatswords one-handed with a WA-enabling shield? The long swipe you get from the one-handed animation actually wraps around behind the character for a 270-degree hitbox which is INSANELY satisfying to me as it basically lets me Orphan of Kos my way through all kinds of situations. I'll take the non-optimal damage output anyday for the chance to give a nasty suprise to any shmuck trying to roll through for a backstab. And it's SO satifying to use for crowd control in PVE
Deacons of the Deep with the Hollowslayer is the most fun I've ever had humiliating a boss. They just get mowed down effortlessly with every swipe.

The Hollow Slayer Greatsword makes sense, actually. The pilgrims put curses into this tree. A sword that specifically cuts down their kind, they're definitely going to see that as a curse so into the tree it goes.
