This ad only seems like recently. I was in my mid to late 20’s when it first hit the air. I find it difficult to believe that it was 30 years ago (over half my life) that this ad has been around.
Wow - what a nostalgia trigger. Even as a kid I remember feeling sort of calmed and reassured by this ad. It represents a uniquely Pakeha NZ cultural heritage that we're almost not allowed to engage with anymore. Watching this now makes me feel kind of homeless.
I directed this commercial. We spent a year shooting it, going back to the location each season. The music was written especially for it by Murray Grindlay. The same piece has been used on every Mainland Cheese ad ever since.
This made me cry. Shows how fast time flys.

They kept screening this advert well into the 2000s, they still use the music in their newer ads too
