10:36 In BoJack Horseman Diane has depression and she has always avoided taking medication because she is afraid of gaining weight and also thinks she needs her suffering to be a creative writer. When she finally starts taking medication late into the story she gains weight. I adored how the story doesn't mock her for the weight gain. We see her struggle with clothes in a dressing room, but overall its treated as a necessary trade off she shouldn't think twice about and that anyone who actually loves her would agree is great.

The Simpsons' nuclear family unit was never meant to be viewed as dysfunctional, it was meant to be viewed as flawed but ultimately good, as there was almost always a redemptive plot involving the main cast in every episode. The show may have been a critique of the problems in capitalism more widely but it definitely wasn't skeptical about the concept of the nuclear family as most problems were solved via their grudging unity.

But things do get popular enough to self perpetuate themselves. Destiny has seen the wire where they sell a drug shittier until it gets a bad reputation then rebrand. It's based on standard corporate practices where you introduce a high quality product and build a username and reputation then slowly find ways to make it cheaper, often if not virtually always decreasing it's quality. It's not even any kind of conspiracy theory it's the economic lifecycle of many goods. Game of thrones, for example. Most people do not experience all goods and choose the best, they rely on advertising, recommendations, etc. This is why the quality of a product is not as important as a libertarian would believe.

His reference to bands was a bit off as well. I guess there are plenty who release one good album and then drop off but that's not really analogous. The Simpsons did 6 excellent series and another 4 decent enough series before dropping off a cliff. They established themselves. There's 100's of rock bands that haven't put out a decent album in 20 years who sell out arenas across the world. Hell even one hit wonder bands will still have decent careers playing live shows. He's also being way too harsh on Rick and Morty Season two, plus the Pickle Rick episode was season three where I agree there is a big drop in quality.

I disagree where Destiny is saying that a lot of media doesn't degrade in quality. When something reaches a certain level of popularity in which they KNOW there will be an audience because of past success, there's a unearned huge advantage the newer episodes will have JUST by association. The people already liked the previous content, and want more so they come in with a more favorable view of it, and familiarity as well. If the Simpsons stated out this bad back then, it would have never gained in popularity the way it has.

A better example is nba 2K And the madden series. They hold a. Monopoly on thoes sports games and the quality of them has been in decline for over a decade but they don't lose money because they are the only source for these type of video games.

One thing that a lot of people don’t realise is that Marx was in awe of capitalism, he thought it was the most efficient system ever created. He didn’t critique it because he thought it was the worst conceivable system to live under, he even recognised that it could vastly improve the lives of people in society. He just thought that it had internal contradictions that would eventually cause it to collapse.
Marx’s goal, like all modernists who believed in the idea of “Progress”, was to find and reveal the “truth” about the world/society in order to bring about some sort of utopia. And being that he (as an economic determinist) gave primacy to the economic base of a society he was trying to reveal the “truth” about capitalist society to the masses, as capitalism was the dominant economic system at the time. A truth which he believed would eventually lead to a revolution and a communist utopia.
Like most modernist ideas, and I’m going to sound like a postmodernist now, his truth wasn’t so much truth as it was a narrative, he had evidence but it was still a narrative with blind spots (he didn’t expect the capitalist system to be as flexible as it has been e.g. being flexible enough to implement social programmes). Nevertheless, Marx was actually brilliant (way more brilliant than the average lefty who probably doesn’t even understand his perspective), and his critique was and still is useful to an extent.

Nice to see someone that has a grasp on Marx unlike the masses in America that think they do because the media tells them everything socialist/communistic is just evil without knowing the first thing about marx’s critique
I suggest Marx did consider social programs
My understanding is these social programs the world moving into socialism which is what he predicted. They are socialistic programs and the beginning of the move to socialism.
Also, Marx shows we will utilize socialistic programs but ultimately the contradictions in capitalism still remain and will continue to push the destruction of that system

Just to be clear Marx obviously didn't like capitalism, he was a communist actively advocating against it. Since he wasn't a dumbfuck he still realized that capitalism was a little better than the systems that came before and that (really important!) we need to maintain it as an enemy in order to progress towards a better world. Lots of people don't seem to understand that, especially those smoothbrains who thought paving the way for fascism could radicalize people to the left.

That famous clip of Hasan going “he’s a fucking liar dude” is the perfect example of this. Hasan raging over something destiny’s calmly said because he disagreed with it.
In recent years it’s kinda the opposite. Unless destiny is talking about the most mild shit imaginable, or something he explicitly agrees with, he gets vicious.

I know Destiny was kinda meming when he said this, but I honestly think a mandatory weekly community service event would go a long way toward fixing most issues in society indirectly. Like the video has said, we've been isolating ourselves from our communities through the nuclear family, entertainment, the internet, etc, which is unhealthy for humans because we are social animal and thrive in group environments. Thus having people forced to socialize with others would not only address the rise of asocial behaviors, but also get people to care about local politics in their community because they will have formed social bonds with the people in their community, so they would be incentivized to participate in the political system. Now this doesn't mean it would be like the end of a Disney movie where everyone is singing and dancing, but getting people to step out of their isolated bubbles and become exposed to different types of people is the first step in getting people to care about what goes on in their community, which is the only way for a democracy to work. At the end of the day, we want to incentivize people to engage in the political system, and the best way to do that is through making people care about the outcomes of their community through their social bonds.

This is only because the tone of Republican rhetoric has shifted considerably over the past 4 years. They have gone mask off while trying to hold on to support of Trump's cult of voters, and this has left them vulnerable to attacks for being anti-democratic (which they are). Biden is a savvy politician, he has to be to have stayed relevant for so long, so he knows how to tell which way the wind is blowing.
Basically, imo we're lucky that we've got a strong (hopefully bi-partisan) pushback against Trumpism going on in America, otherwise we would've had a very different style of Biden. Also, he hasn't actually gotten into office yet, so lets hope his tough talk translates into actually helping push through bold legislation while Dems have the power to.

I will say though, if capitalism has had to concede on issues and allow the generation of interpassivity I hope with time, the urge of art to not be bound by money and the very social, creative nature of art will eventually destroy capitalism. Naive maybe but gotta have hope I reckon.

i don't think that they touched on one of the points enough, the reason why the characters in the Simpsons become self parodies rather than parodies of broader culture is because they become more familiar, if you have never seen the show before and you watch the first season, you don't know who homer is so you relate him to what you know, your father, the idealized father, fathers from other family sitcoms, etc, but now when someone sees homer he's so ingrained in their brains as a cultural icon that they no longer see him as referencing other things, at least not as much, this also applies to the writers view of the characters, perhaps even more so.

I think the increased audience of games has created a bigger and more diverse option for gaming than basically ever before. The problem for me specifically is the type of games I personally enjoy(rpgs and fps) are the ones that have become the most sterilized and homogeneous in the big budget gaming circle.

Yeah, really bad take. I'd say seasons 1 and 2 maybe didn't age so well in terms of comedy, but from that point on it was genuinely really funny all the way through to maybe season 11. It's trendy to hate on season 9 but it was still very solid too.

Destiny objects to the notion that capitalist companies make worse products over time (~20:00). But I think it's obvious that often they do. Levi's jeans, Toyota's cars, Activision's videogames. Brands and brand loyalty make it possible to cut costs without immediately losing your customer-base and when a company's growth slows or stops they almost always start looking for ways to do this.
I don't think it's all bad -- brands are also a powerful incentive to compete and offer a high quality product at near-cost or even at a loss in the hope of future profits, this is basically what sustains the VC-backed ecosystem. But I think it is a valid critique to say that brands allow companies to make worse products than competitors and stay market leaders. And especially when combined with other ways that companies can erect barriers to entry for competitors such as regulatory capture it can lead to very dysfunctional markets.

Things that remind me of this the most besides the Ford Pinto are the cases for right for repair in the case of apple and John Deere. Where you have to go to the manufacturer to pay crazy costs to fix something that could have been cut in half or a quarter of the cost if you went to a third party.

It's refreshing to hear someone on TH-cam that 'gets it'; that gets the need for critique. This same method of critique happens all the time in universities. That's what they're great for. Trouble is, as Destiny rightly points out, this critique is misconstrued as refutation and some nefarious plot to overthrow western civilisation. People have a fundamental lack of understanding of the nuances of critique. Marx was offering a critique of capitalism, but what a lot of people don't know, he had a lot of praise for capitalism too. Who'd have thought, eh?

    • @Lewa500
      @Lewa500 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thing is, a lot of people that make these critiques really *do* want to overthrow Western civilization. That's why they lie and twist the truth if it's in their favor, constantly demonize anyone who disagrees with them, and go out of their way to destroy people's livelihoods for even the smallest infraction. People who criticize in good faith don't do that.

@@Lewa500 Some, yeah. I don't doubt there are people that want to overthrow western civilisation. I'd say they were pretty fringe, though. I'd say the general thrust of most critique is to understand. People have an urge to understand the world around them and that involves critiquing the systems which we live in. The trouble is, other people will take that critique, miss understand, and use it to allign their worldview. Those people exist in all parts of society, including academia, they're called idiots.
