Hyper - 204 kg SMT - 210 kg Multi - 234 kg I don't think you can compare the Hyper with the Multi. Having just done 1500 miles touring around France on a Hyper, I can say that it's good fun - boring on motorways (isn't any bike?) but excellent on the B-roads. I did 400 miles one day, easy, fully luggaged up with tent, etc. And then you arrive and go for luggage-free spins along those country roads in the Dordogne - bliss. I agree that it needs a bigger tank.
What about for commuting with occasional touring like most riders would use for. I think the hyperstrada would meet the needs of an everyday commuter with weekend blast and occasional long distance ride. So for me I think hyperstrada.
I own an 09 plate 990 so not sure how relevant my words are, but soon after buying mine last year, I found myself on a lazy(ish) tour of my local area during the harvest. In only a few hours I went to see my girlfriend (20 miles of heavy main road 60-80mph traffic), had a little back road blasting on the country lanes (20-60mph twisties with added bumps) looking for combines, or specifically my mates, and on finding them several fields in from the road, I then rode up to all the machines socialising (0-10mph serious off roading). When the combines shredded debris lands on the tramlines it creates a dry surface equivocal to black ice. The 990 took the entire day in her stride and inspired bags of confidence at every step. Not bad for a big heavy tourer/commuter I can do up to 800 miles a week on in total comfort and in all weathers when my work makes me really travel.
I;m selling my Multistrada S and buying a Hyperstrada. Despite what these guys reckon, everything must be measured against your ride, a very personal thing. I bought the Multistrada thinking it would be the adventure bike I wanted. The problem is that the Multistrada is crap on gravel while the Hyperstrada is much better. Weight and ride position make all the difference and where the Multi is heavy and scarily unstable on gravel, the Hyper is light and confidence building. Given I live in New Zealand where the roads are 50% gravel; my adventure bike has to be good on both and only the Hyper cuts it. I ove the power of the Multi but after 2 years, I recognise that I barely use it and just don't need it. The Hyper has plenty. Yes, I will fit better forks and shock and increase travel a bit when I do so. I have a dead KTM690smc and I will see whether I can fit those forks and shock.
I like the fact that they also compare it to the KTM SMT. A lot of reviewers have forgotten this bike with al the new arrivals. But like Neevesy said, it's one of the best all-rounders you can find.
I'd like a Multistrada especially having ridden one for a week-end but I bought the SMT for one very good reason - a low mileage one only costs £6k. And it's still a superb bike. And less likely to get nicked.
ive been lucky enough to own over 180 bikes from cruisers to rocket ships and have settled for my 2 favourites of all time, KTM950 Adventure and 2012 KTM 990 SMT, 16 tooth sprockets on both changes them completely and removes jerkyness ( best and cheapest mod), smt for day to day and can easily tour with additional fuel and my adventure for touring, smiles for miles each and every time!
Ive had the ms pp for over a year. Best Bike ive ever ridden. Did 2k miles on the Pacific coast USA this year. 2 up camping, Forrest roads, beaches and mountian twisties. Then its still comfy blasting down the motorway. I have a 1098 for the track but for anything else the ms is just the perfect ride.
Multistrada looks more plush, comfortable easier to live with (heated grips) I'm 5'8" so seat height, feet flat on the ground ,centre stand are important. For me initially I favored the Hyperstrada.
Love my new Multi, but as i don't drive a car and am keen on an everyday bike, i am thinking about the new HyperStrada as my daily ride. Fun times :-) will keep my Multi for touring here in NZ though. NZ roads aren't 50% gravel....
+Angus Norton You've most likely found out that the Hyperstrada's seating position is a likeness to an alien anal probing station. While Alien technology sounds cool, this isn't exactly what we had in mind.
I rode both the hyperstrada and the SMT last weekend. I thought the Ducati was MILES better. The adjustable ride modes give you far more flexibility, the sport mode is much punchier than the SMT and the urban mode is great for inner city riding. The Ducati feels more flickable than the SMT, and far more fun to ride. The only advantage the ktm did have was the turning lock. That thing can practically do a u-turn in a single lane!
Another great review - I rode one a few months ago but actually went for the F700GS as I thought the Hyoerstrada was just too like a dirt bike. Btw, *please* can you guys learn how to mix the audio and music at the same volume?!?! You can hardly hear the audio at times so I turn the speakers up only to be deafened by the music 20 seconds later!! It's the same in nearly all your videos too - please, for the sake of our hearing, take some time to mix both audio and music *at the same level*!!!
Nice review . This dude always gives the better motorcycle reviews . Keep up the good work MCN . I value your opinion . I base a large part of my buying power on your reviews and you have never done me wrong . My 3rd new bike that I recently purchased based on your opinion is the new V-strom 650 . You gave it 5 stars . Excellent bang for the buck . I have been getting 65-67 mpg on it this past year . You are right . It makes the Tiger 800 look over priced with the $2500 higher price tag .
I had a multistrada and now i'm riding a hypermotard SP.... The only thing that i miss is the punch of the multi ... hypermotard SP more fun, better suspensions, better handling, better brakes....
the quality of the vids has gone really high. Great one as always Btw i like that you conclude the head2head. I hate it when the speaker goes " Its ultimately what you prefer.
cant stand these big very heavy touring bikes.... the hyperstrada is by miles the most appealing and enjoyable bike out of these 3, cant beleive you rated it the worst because the others are bigger... lol
Based on that think ill try out the SMT! I would be too careful on the multistrada and I could imagine that hyperstrada is really uncomfortable after about an hour, plus the maintenance costs are bound to be ridiculous. Shame theu havent updated the smt's engine though, to something abit more refined
They are all very good bikes, but here in OZ the Multi is over $28'000 and you can pick up an SMT for $17,000, just depends on how deep your pockets are.. and don't forget there is the Triumph Tiger Sport out now and its a very good bang for buck bike..
the smt is a good choice for very long ride more comfortable seat also and passenger abs side pannier engine stone ,crash bar protection with mobile charger adapter can ride off road and road .i ride kazakhstan to turkey without any problem my wife and me very nice trip.i prefer ktm it is the best motorbike on road even off.
The KTM 990SMT is a rather old bike..Certainly the engine which is like 7 years old by now, even older if u go back to the 950 that it is based on and has seen the light back in 2003. The updates on the rest of the bike are rather marginal since it's release. The choice between these 3 is based on what you want and what u'd like to spend. Being the Multistrada if u got the cash to buy and maintain it. If you're limited on funds and know you way a bit with wrenches the SMT is the cheapest choice.
Hyper seat height is too tall 850mm I think, so It should suit the taller guy....afraid not as the seat is so close to the bars, it is indead like sitting on a motocrosser. Good for messing around hills and caynons but not as a tourer. The Multi and Ktm are best suited to this and the Skyhook is just on another level, best bike I've ridden so far.
In my opinion why do you need all the electronics in a motorcycle nowadays. Yes ABS is a valued piece of technology that aids in safety, but everything else is rather pointless. Buying the Multi (£15K) is only showing people that you have more money than sense. Why consider the Hyper (£10K+), you're compromising on the Ducati esq for a cramped, watered down Multi, it would be like someone buying a Porsche boxter (cheap mans choice). So it would only make logical sense to go for the KTM (£10K)
This is not very helpful. Talk about VALUE, what you get for the money, what you can do with the bike, what it will work best for--what if you don't like big bikes? what if it is for commuting? how is it urban? CLEARLY, if I had $24k I would buy a multistrada, but that just isn't feasible. terrible review, sorry. I learned nothing other than spending more gets you more.
Hyper - 204 kg
SMT - 210 kg
Multi - 234 kg
I don't think you can compare the Hyper with the Multi. I did 400 miles one day, easy, fully luggaged up with tent, etc. And then you arrive and go for luggage-free spins along those country roads in the Dordogne - bliss. I agree that it needs a bigger tank.
Comfort on highway is directly translated to comfort longer trips on bigger roads IMO.
What about for commuting with occasional touring like most riders would use for. I think the hyperstrada would meet the needs of an everyday commuter with weekend blast and occasional long distance ride. So for me I think hyperstrada.

Not surprised that the two owners like their bikes the best.
People defend their investments.

Can you lower the music in the audio mix so we can hear the bikes?
I'd like a Multistrada especially having ridden one for a week-end but I bought the SMT for one very good reason - a low mileage one only costs £6k. And it's still a superb bike. And less likely to get nicked.

It would have been nice to hear the bikes running instead of the goofy music. Just saying...
Ive had the ms pp for over a year. Best Bike ive ever ridden. Did 2k miles on the Pacific coast USA this year. 2 up camping, Forrest roads, beaches and mountian twisties. MCN, the only music we care to here comes from the bikes!!
Breaking News!
"It's too small" - Tall Fat Guy.
you can now resume your normal programming.
Why why why do you dub music over the sounds of a motorbike your reviewing?!?!?!?!?
wait wait wait. the supermoto is smaller then a full size tourer?!?! my mind is blown.
Always fancied the idea of a supermoto til I road one.. That multistrada is a bike and a half.. Great little review / comparison of the three bikes..
Anyone that hasn't ridden a Multistrada, needs to try one. It's an amazing bike all around.
KTM SMT is the still prettiest though.
MCN the video quality has come along way and its good especially the mic audio but either different music or no music
Multistrada looks more plush, comfortable easier to live with (heated grips) I'm 5'8" so seat height, feet flat on the ground ,centre stand are important. For me initially I favored the Hyperstrada.
I notice you have the touring screen on the hyperstrada - how is it? Far better than the stock screen (which seems prety good). Thank you.
Hi what is the jeans Michael wearing??
Love my new Multi, but as i don't drive a car and am keen on an everyday bike, i am thinking about the new HyperStrada as my daily ride. Fun times :-) will keep my Multi for touring here in NZ though. NZ roads aren't 50% gravel....
+Angus Norton You've most likely found out that the Hyperstrada's seating position is a likeness to an alien anal probing station. While Alien technology sounds cool, this isn't exactly what we had in mind.
Sometimes, i wake up in the morning, and just feel pissed off over how this is someones job..
I rode both the hyperstrada and the SMT last weekend. I thought the Ducati was MILES better. Not one of your best videos MCN.
Which orange/multi
ARAI helmet is this? and year? very fun & cool :)
Paul is a beast of a man, esp when on that little 820cc Duck.
you need a to compare sound equip.. and mic's ..

Thank you for this review! I just wish there were more used SMT's available in the US
Nice review . This dude always gives the better motorcycle reviews . Keep up the good work MCN . I value your opinion . how tall is that rider on smt ? im 195cm tall, im thinking about buying a smt
I’m 6’4” 250 fit great on smt!
I'm a big guy so I want a big bike.. that's pretty much how it went
the quality of the vids has gone really high. Great one as always
Btw i like that you conclude the head2head. I hate it when the speaker goes " Its ultimately what you prefer.
@livebyreason, what? WHERE do you want the music?
Love the title of the video "Ducati Hyperstrada vs KTM SMT"
.....and the winner is..... MULTISTRADA!! :D
Hyperstrada and SMT are like WTF :O
So ... which one of these super models would you sleep with?
cant stand these big very heavy touring bikes.... the hyperstrada is by miles the most appealing and enjoyable bike out of these 3, cant beleive you rated it the worst because the others are bigger... lol

pretty lame review, as expected from MCN. Maybe if you called it older bloke's personal favourite to do miles on...
you should do reviews, yours makes more sense than the motorcyclenews crew's thoughtless attempt.
why the multistrada and not the Triumph TigerSport?
Why are you playing shitty techno music over the engine sounds? We're here to listen to the bikes
the smt is a good choice for very long ride more comfortable seat also and passenger abs side pannier engine stone ,crash bar protection with mobile charger adapter can ride off road and road .i ride kazakhstan to turkey without any problem my wife and me very nice trip.i prefer ktm it is the best motorbike on road even off.
Great review. Nice
can you edit it so the voice is at the same volume as the music -.- otherwise good comparison video guys
6 minutes long .....where's the review??? It was just like " Hey do you like this bike...uumm sure..its small"..the end
Wish KTMs could bring a 390 CC Tourers they give good gas mileage. :)
2020 KTM 390 Adventure
They kept on saying negatively they hyper is a small bike....THATS THE REASON they made it.
Could we ever see a Multistrada vs GS1200R
lol, so what i got out of this is...the bigger, and more expensive, the better. I'm about done with mcn
The KTM 990SMT is a rather old bike..Certainly the engine which is like 7 years old by now, even older if u go back to the 950 that it is based on and has seen the light back in 2003. KTM 990 SMT... The one and only!
Ten out of ten for the into music
3:17 Hypnotysing the camera, scratching the ducatis butt und lost control over his tongue! Hilarious XD
Multistrada... is the champion of everything!
Next time no music please. Then we can hear the exhaust notes and maybe get more of a feel of what's going on. Thanks
COST?!?!?
agreed, music too loud, we need to hear the engine!
Or sliding into a corner, hell the SMT is made to do that kind of stuff!
Personally I prefer that Ducati sound :)
Excellent review
ducati is nice but will empty your pockets with maintenance & repairs.. KTM is old school compared to the multi & much better
Road Test?
anything would be too small for that man mountain
1:14 Jimmmmmmmaaaaayyyyyyy
Roomier? You got all the room because you're not confined in a shell like all cars. You mean bulkier?
I prefer much more the ducati, in this model. She wants an akra :)
multi-strada just looks so much nicer...
serious volume issues
In my opinion why do you need all the electronics in a motorcycle nowadays. Yes ABS is a valued piece of technology that aids in safety, but everything else is rather pointless. The 2013 looks like a VStrom? Time to get your eyes checked. :p

lol, faulting the size of the Hyperstrada because it's "small", even though that guy should be faulting his own size because he's way too big.
Keep it boring informative and British chappers bloody great vid
Man, MCN really sucked at reviewing bikes 6 years ago.
Porfin el de fullgas aprendio ingles 🤣🤣
Would be a joke if the SMT won, that thing is like a dinosaur compared to the Duc's :D
The new KTM looks like old VStrom :)
I saw mr.bean !!
peg to seat distance anyone?!?!
Stop tapping the multistrada...
Ktm smt per sempre!
Fell for it.....watched yet another crap MCN video, some people never learn!
tall!!!! go to a dealer and let your ass decided?!?
I'm just being sarcastic.
dull bikes FTW
LAST
I gave Dislike because the sound you record is still sh*t. Voice is very quiet and music very loud. Some moments I nearly got heart attack
