I'd be interested how you deal with getting saddle sore on these long rides. Custom seat? Air/Grl seat pad? Padded shorts? I'd be interested to know, I've got some serious rides planned for 2023 on my Tracer 9gt.
Lol fun fact, I did wonder how far this wasor where it'll get you from point to point. Going to check from my house as well, to see where it can take me.
Melbourne to Sydney in Australia, just a tiny fraction of this gynormous continent. PS, not counting Alaska, the USA and Australia are pretty much the same size, on par with Brazil and China.
I think you are right about the Hyperstrada but here is another interesting point of view every american should consider: if you do 110 miles with a full tank, that means that you can pretty much do Italy coast to coast with 1 full tank and top to bottom with 6. I think sometimes you forget how huge (and beautiful) your country is.
I've seen many movies, shows, videos of Italy, and it looks stunning. That's a helluva compliment, Nik! A sentiment I do share! I love our (my) beautiful, messed up at times, country! I fought for it..I'm keepin it :) 50 years on the planet, and I've got a few more states to cover.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it: you want to tuck your ground sheet under your tent. If the footprint of the tarp is larger than the tent and it rains then you're stuck in a puddle. If you tuck the tarp in under your tent then you won't run into that problem. Great video my guy! Looking forward to doing some Moto camping from my CBR650R. Keep up the great work.
Having owned a Hyperstrada, the first three minutes gave me flashbacks. One big thing to keep an eye on with these bikes: The throttle-by-wire can short out in heavy rain. If this occurs once, it'll continue to randomly pop up without any real rhyme or reason. When the short happens, your bike will die, even if you're doing 85 in busy traffic on the freeway at night. Sometimes you can restart it while riding, sometimes you can't. Don't listen to the dealership that wants to disassemble your bike and check every connector at $150/hr shop rate. Instead, check the Ducati recall info for the part number of the replacement throttle assembly and swap it out yourself. And keep a plastic bag handy to cover the right side of the handlebars if you need to park it in the rain. I recommend a taller windscreen, as well as strapping a two small gas canisters somewhere just as backup to get you to the next station if need be. These bikes are insanely fun, and undeniably gorgeous. But dealerships will treat you like a walking piggy bank, and the service intervals are unpleasantly short.
Yay! My bike made it in the video. That's my GS's fat booty at 16:00, AKA the Deutschland Dirt bagger. We didn't formally meet that day, but it was good seeing you there.
Heated grips are a must in the cold. Also i one time got soaking wet in a rainstorm and had to cruise 100 miles home in 42-43F degrees - that is when i learned that plastic bags stuffed under wet jacket make a great windstopper. Great video, thank you! Keep warm and dont get a cold!
I just did my first "big" tour of 270 km in a day and i was dead afterwards. Could not have ridden as much again on the following day .Respect for doing15x the distance
@@punkrockdidi It's a fun torque bike with an upright position, good for touring, comuting doing twisties and all that but the suspension.. ooh my god, it's basically shit. it doesn't like oneven surfaces, I messed with the pre load and rebound damping but still not very confidence inspiring. It was amazing to finally get a chance to meet you! Thanks again for coming and sharing a wonderful weekend with the Brap Star crew at Forgotten Angels. ❤
Sometimes you can’t quit. I’ve ridden past hotels that were screaming at me to stop. I’m not sure what drives people past their breaking point, but it’s real and some have it. Some don’t.
I have done some 350mile trips i usually do it in around 5 hours on my MT07 and you are super tired after so 2500 miles is insane, great work🎉 i get around 160 miles out of a tank.
You would need to be really giving some beans nearly all the time to travel 350mls in 5hrs, probly 3 fuel stops too... Respect, broken back/arse is my thoughts, I can only stand 60mls & I wanna set fire to my bike.
Haha yeah well you do around 75mph average and if you fill up at home you only have one stop to need to fill up around half way, its mostly highway the trip i tend to take
Haha well then i have a iron ass cuz i can sit for 150 miles fill up for 5 minutes and do another 150 but my hands get really numb after about 100 miles, i use to do that trip on a CRF250 rally and that completely destroyed me for about 4 days
@@kvd07 Haha I did around 1200 miles in two days on a crf250l so I feel your pain, it was rough going! Natchez trace starting from baton rouge LA then back.
Love this style of content. A motorcycle tour on a affordable bike, the kind of bike most of us have, and not the crazy top line GS or Goldwings you often get. Truely feels like you are on a road trip with a friend. Keep up the good work Spite.
Just wanted to give you a Hugh THANK YOU for coming to Forgotten Angels camp out. It is a amazing event. I look forward to seeing you again in October. My Grom ended up with 108 miles put on it being ridden around the campground.
the r35 at 21:41 kept stealing my attention, for better or worse, i think i see an anime livery, mistook it for an hks clone at first and had to go back, lovely trip. looks like a good time even though there were some issues. hopefully i will see you there in october when the weather is nice again.
Man those roads in the Americas are soo long... and strait... as a European I would be bored after the first 100 k's lol. But kudos on holding out, sitting still at high speeds when it's cold is a killer, you're tough bro!!
I feel that range anxiety spite. About a hundred miles out of my vmax 1700. What's worse is I live in Maine so there aren't as many gas stations and half don't have 93 octane at the pumps.
I have to go to Louisiana frequently with my job. I recognized a couple of stretches of that highway. I admire your guts and grit sir. I’ve taken a trip when the rain caught me and a four hour trip turned into a nine hour trip. When I get to the hotel I was exhausted but it never felt better to be warm at any time during my life.😅
I was feeling for you stopping every 100 miles remembering those days! I've had two 1100s' and both times put a 6.4 gal tank on it (you can't even see the tank) because of the limited range. I love the new hypers but am not willing to give up the flexibility to do longer rides in more desolate places. I'm with you, they are great all around machines, comfortable, quick, and scalpels around town.
Ah, yeah. That speech impaired cold. We have all gone through it. My worst case was once that I misjudged the weather and time and was light on gear and started to get icy when I was going home. When I arrived, I couldnt open my hands off the handlebars cold level. My mom saw me, help me get off the bike and tossed me into the shower. XD
I love it, I have the original Hyper 2008 done some 3000 mile tours on it. Worse seat in the world but if find twisty roads well worth the pain.Yep Duc tanks suck. Always carry extra fuel.
Ah the dread Ducati 100 mile gas gauge. I have a 2004 Multistrada and a 2012 Hypermotard. Both will tell you that they are empty at about 100 miles. The Multistrada will reliably go 150 and the Hyper will do at least 130. You just have to learn what the bike will do and use the fuel warning as a hint to get gas in about thirty miles.
Brings me back to some great adventures with my Ducati 848 EVO. Went from the west coast of Spain to the east coast in one long stint, with the only luggage being a backpack. My buddy and I then hopped on a ferry, slept on a cafeteria floor and woke up in Palma de Mallorca, before going to meet some girls he met online and crashing with them for a couple days and then riding back. Good times!
Spite, you should try riding in the UK, it's cold most of the time. The longest I've done in a day is 250 miles, and my arse was numb. It's was on a vfr800 and was getting 160 miles a tank. You should go back to one of those. Great video, as always.
I have the same exact bike. I took off the screen and replaced it with a CF shorty and it is much better. The only time I'd use the touring screen is like you when the temp drops. I've taken the Hyper on shorter trips, 200-300 miles, but I must confess, as much as I love it, if I were traveling that distance, I'd be on my Multistrada. Besides longer range, a bit better comfort, and wind protection, the extra power on the highway makes it, IMHO, better for long distances. That said, great video. If you ever get back to MS, I know some good roads to ride.
If I recall, we each left the campout in the same time frame. That rain hit me in Ocala and it continued all the way back to Jacksonville which probably matches up with your ride to Lake City. I bet you'd have liked the 5 gallon capacity that my Multistrada has.
You did it but right tool for the job if you went on a Goldwing you could have put the windshield up turned on the heated grips and seat and cruised 200 miles or more before stopping for gas
I just did UK to Greece, which is about 2k odd miles. Take the back roads is my advice to anyone doing similar distances, take plenty of breaks, and do it slowly. It took me 3.5 days. Could've gone faster if not for the speed limit in France. Should've gone a lot slower.
I had the same windscreen problem with my bike. I bought a taller "touring" screen hoping to deflect more wind, and it did. But it deflected it all into my face so your head buffeted around all day and made your neck sore. Went back to the shorty screen.
Good job getting it done Spite! Great that you went to Forgotten Angels and hopefully in October as well, with the van! I bet a Pan Am or GSX-S GT or something would or might be a little more comfortable at long rides like this lol.
Spite, if you have never listened to it, the dollop is a great traveling podcast to listen to, its strange american history explored by two comedians, both funny an educational, also they take it to some strange places, if you wanna kill miles on the road I highly recommend it.
I did 6655 km on this last year from Kl to Chiangmai through the famous 1000 corner Mae Hong Son then Pattaya and back to Kl. Very good bike esp handling and fuel consumption. Just the fuel tank is small 16 L where there was 1 part the nearest city was 320 km and had to look for fuel in the middle of nowhere in the mountains. Luckily the was a kiosk selling fuel of course at a higher price, just to get me to refuel at the next town. Great bike , nimble but a bit small though.
Nice job Spite! You are very correct, in your comments, about how awesome FA/STS-Weirdo Camp out is. Quite possibly, life changing in the most wonderful way. I might ride out this time (Seattle>>>Tampa 3,090 mi.) See you in October.
Take it from a Canadian. Get a heated jacket liner! No reason to suffer during riding because of cold. Packs small, and can be a breathable waterproof layer as well with the right brand.
I think most of us Hypermotard riders suffer from too much wind and a HORRIBLE seat. Could never imagine doing 2500 miles on my Hypermotard 950. And we can get 120-140 miles on our tanks. Kudos to your ability to do this.
love watchinh these long cross country tours, the type of thing shadetree does. by the amount of fuel stops you had to do, might be worth looking into a proper long range tourer..?
The great difficulty you have with weather might be mitigated by buying a 1-piece Aerostich suit. Cool in summer, warm in winter, and very rain resistant indeed. They even come with an inside back pouch where you can throw a bit of ice as a form of incredibly effective air-conditioning that lasts several hours.
Been watching a few of your videos and been thinking you look familiar. After watching this one, I realized I've seen you around at Forgotten Angels a year ago. You going again? I'm hitting the road tomorrow from Mississippi. Just subbed too.
Yeah I took three weeks once riding from Spain to Glasgow Scotland, with the second week in pelting rain and the third week in freezing sleet. That wet and cold crept up and held me stiff in a cellar. I was a statue every time I got off the bike, with my hands turned to claw-like features.
You stopped in my hometown of Westlake for gas..... the trip from Baton Rouge to Mobile has to be the longest stretch of nothing to ride. Be safe out there buddy.
You were down the street from me when you stopped in Daphne, AL off I-10. Helluva a grind man, I've done 450 miles in a day before on my Scout but that wasn't fun. Appreciate the footage. Don't want to think I'm the only dumb one out there 😂
stopping every 90 mins or 120 miles on my moto was good for my butt as well as back .. now my bike is not a long hauler but definitely need that 6th gear to help those miles go longer lol. Anyway glad you had a good time on your trip. and maybe a larger tank for you, a 6th gear for me or a different bike for me to do the long haulers. LOL.. great vid as always cheers.
I didn't see the video until now, i'm like 30 seconds why and I'm already crying "Why would you even want to consider the thought of doing that....", well, I guess it makes for good content to impose sufuring to oneself ^^
Looks like a good time. I keep thinking I should come down for one of these. The ride is a little longer from Pittsburgh though. Who knows? Maybe one day. 🙃
That's rough, my bike only makes it around 120 miles on a tank. I only have a 2 gallon tank and the fuel gauge reads empty when I still have a gallon left. Granted that I have a dual sport with a hard narrow seat that makes you want to stop after a 100 miles anyway, I feel your pain Spite.
He might have been more comfortable, but he might not have made it on time depending on what his average speed was. Then again, he could have pushed closer to 200 miles a tank for near half the stops 🤷🏼. I'd like to know as well though if he thinks the klr would have been the better option.
I used to do thousand mile weekends on my Buell XB 9 Lightning. The fuel stops were welcome. My Z1000 goes about 100 miles on a tank. It is a shame it doesn’t get better mileage.
Re: refuelling stops - remember, Spite, your Pasta Glide was designed to "tour" in a part of the world where, had you covered the same distance you rode on this trip, you would have crossed as many international borders as you crossed state lines, and would have passed through ten or twelve major cities in the process. And all that would have taken a helluva lot longer. Europeans think differently. Three to four hundred kilometers is a long day of riding for them. Stopping once every hour and a half for gas isn't regarded as much of a hassle, compared to being delayed by border crossings and traffic congestion.
Good vid but it is pretty funny to see how you catastrophise quite small problems like some rain and cold. Impressive distance but 44 isn't cold if you pack properly. Couple layers under my jacket and I'm comy in 35 (heated gloves required without grips).
Thats a very long trip. Good job thats going from Groningen most northen city to maastricht southern city in the Netherlands 12 times. I live in a small country haha.
Good video mate thanks for the experience. However, I was under the impression that a KLR would be better for touring than a Hyperstrada with more range and more comfortable seat? Sure it has less power but enough to keep you on speed? Just curious really and correct me if I'm wrong. Love your videos!
This is a young man's game. I once did 700M on my LeMans V in one day, though much of it was WV mountain miles that count at least triple. Fact: Years ago a Brit brought his LeMans 111 over for the iron butt contest, complete with the classic tea towel over a brick saddle. He won. I guess the saddle made him get the hell on. I wonder how he avoided the cops.

I grew up in France. I remember one very important geographic lesson. Texas is bigger than France, and we got 49 more states
add just a little bit more and you're going from Belgium to Morocco
Melbourne to Sydney in Australia, just a tiny fraction of this gynormous continent.
PS, not counting Alaska, the USA and Australia are pretty much the same size, on par with Brazil and China.
I think you are right about the Hyperstrada but here is another interesting point of view every american should consider: if you do 110 miles with a full tank, that means that you can pretty much do Italy coast to coast with 1 full tank and top to bottom with 6. Not often do I see someone else using their hand as a way of gauging how much sunlight is left. Made me happy!

Is yours 821 std model?
never had that happen in some 50,000 miles. Never heard of it before.

Take it from a Canadian. Get a heated jacket liner! No reason to suffer during riding because of cold. Packs small, and can be a breathable waterproof layer as well with the right brand.
Excellent video Spite!
My Brother-in-BRAP, been lookin' forward to this video and the one you did with Kenny Quest at Forgotten Angels... This gonna be a great one!!!
I think most of us Hypermotard riders suffer from too much wind and a HORRIBLE seat. Could never imagine doing 2500 miles on my Hypermotard 950. And we can get 120-140 miles on our tanks. Kudos to your ability to do this.
The strada has a different seat and it is comfy. Get rid of the screen and th airflow is clean - eazy peezy.
love watchinh these long cross country tours, the type of thing shadetree does. by the amount of fuel stops you had to do, might be worth looking into a proper long range tourer..?
The great difficulty you have with weather might be mitigated by buying a 1-piece Aerostich suit. Cool in summer, warm in winter, and very rain resistant indeed. They even come with an inside back pouch where you can throw a bit of ice as a form of incredibly effective air-conditioning that lasts several hours.
Been watching a few of your videos and been thinking you look familiar. After watching this one, I realized I've seen you around at Forgotten Angels a year ago. You going again? I'm hitting the road tomorrow from Mississippi. Just subbed too.
Was wondering when this would show up given I saw you in Shadetree's video with that bike a bit ago
I was watchin him go over i-10 like 😬
@@lunketh1 it's not that bad, I go over it everyday... Lol
Oh definitely. Any normal day its not bad to drive over but knowing its rating is horrifying lol
Tuck the ground cloth under the tent floor. This is so that rain/dew running down the sides of the tent doesn't end up on top of the ground cloth.
Amazing road trip video.
You missed out on some awesome gator sausage at the Tiger truck stop. Great catfish, too.
Well done man 👍
Great video !
Thinking about making the trip from jersey to fl on a cb300f
Next time you head through Pensacola, check out El Asador for some of the best tacos you'll ever have- they top what I've gotten in Ft. Worth and LA.
Love the touring videos!
You were down the street from me when you stopped in Daphne, AL off I-10. Helluva a grind man, I've done 450 miles in a day before on my Scout but that wasn't fun. Appreciate the footage. Don't want to think I'm the only dumb one out there 😂
Almost like a 5 gallon tank like the one on the Versys comes in handy
I'm in Baton Rouge! I've driven these roads a lot for Pensacola beach trips haha :)
Great Video Spite
Completely awesome 😎 subscribed. Glad you finally made it out of Florida 😂😂😂😂😂😂
stopping every 90 mins or 120 miles on my moto was good for my butt as well as back .. now my bike is not a long hauler but definitely need that 6th gear to help those miles go longer lol. Anyway glad you had a good time on your trip. and maybe a larger tank for you, a 6th gear for me or a different bike for me to do the long haulers. LOL.. great vid as always cheers.
I'm going to make a trip from San Marcos to Fort Seymour Johnson NC on my Street Rod next month. Looking forward to that.
Youch! As a former street rod owner I wish you luck
@Spite's Corner Thanks! Gonna hit the Tail of The Dragon on my way back as well. Going to be a real fun week.
That was fun, I really wish that I too could do that.👍👍👍
About the same fuel range as my Dorsoduro 900.
Lost count of how many fuel stops I had to do during my road trip to Bathurst NB from Quebec city.
Brother. Get some heated gear. Pants, gloves , jacket, even socks if you like. Heated gear changed my life. Love ya, man. Cool video
that sounds like a fun podcast. :D
ALSO Florida basically is Jurassic Park :P
They even have large birds, reptiles, and theme parks.

Time to get a Pan American and a couple of Spare gas cans
"I look like the Pillsbury dough boy & the Michelin tire man got busy in a cracker barrel bathroom"
Hey spite, would you have rather done a trip like this on your klr? I’ve been looking for bikes for a bit now. Thanks
He might have been more comfortable, but he might not have made it on time depending on what his average speed was. Then again, he could have pushed closer to 200 miles a tank for near half the stops 🤷🏼. I'd like to know as well though if he thinks the klr would have been the better option.
I've done similar trips on both, and I can say the Ducati was more comfortable. Heated grips and some better gear would've made the biggest difference
@@spitescorner appreciate that!
I used to do thousand mile weekends on my Buell XB 9 Lightning. The fuel stops were welcome. My Z1000 goes about 100 miles on a tank. It is a shame it doesn’t get better mileage.
Mine gets about 120 before the fuel light with about 40 in reserve - fully loaded backroad mountain scratching.
Stopping once every hour and a half for gas isn't regarded as much of a hassle, compared to being delayed by border crossings and traffic congestion.
that looks like a super fun time!
Nice job man
Good vid but it is pretty funny to see how you catastrophise quite small problems like some rain and cold.
25:00 You know you are getting cold when your speech slows and you can't think.
You need to ride to the camp out in October! Epic content ftw. The hell with your pain 😂
