Could be that someone else has pointed this out but it's worth noting that the way HPG list their volume is different than most manufacturers. Capacity wise this will compare closer to most 30L packs than 20L.
Great review on the Unlindi backpack, Aaron! Your thorough review and observations helped me decide on buying this pack plus the chest rig. I watched a video on the "guardians" of South Africa who patrol the country side for poachers. They all carried this pack. 22 liters doesn't sound like a lot of capacity but I often use a 29 liter pack for my bushcraft excursions. The only items on the exterior are my 18" axe and a first aid/fire kit in a military surplus pouch. The fact that the Unlindi is American made of 500D speaks highly of its durability and capability. I love that it is a "square pack" with the clam shell lid. My pack tapers at the top and it's a pain to squeeze elongated gear into the top of it. $220 plus 100 for the belt is buku bucks but as always you get what you pay for. $320 is not much for an heirloom.
what do you think of this pack 5 years later? do you prefer this backpack over the mystery ranch scree 32 that you own? OR what is your favorite daypack?
I've had this pack for a few years, it's absolutely AWESOME! I like your review style, features, footage, features, footage. One critique, I think you should double check your volume figures, as this pack is more like 1900-2000 cubic inches. One useful mod is to sew a kifaru medium mesh pullout under the lid. Thanks for the review! This has got to be my favorite pack ever!
The High Exposure pack from Tough Traveler is supposed to be slightly bigger than the Umlindi, with about 2200cu worth of carrying space. Of course, the Kit Bag makes up for it. A few 200-round SAW ammo bags or some larger Sustainment Pouches would really give the Umlindi a boost in usability, since you'd have more room in the main compartment for food. I'm of the opinion that a 72-hour bag can easily become a 72-day bag if you make room for food like dried Rice. Sticking with one set of clothes, and a Union Suit or similar article of clothing to wear while washing said clothes or sleeping.
You think this would work well for a female, 5'6" with a 17" torso? It might be overkill. I will be trekking through NYC forests and nature habitats. 1-3-5hr treks. Never hiked in my life. I tried on Osprey, Deuter and Gregory packs and have yet to find comfort. Any wisdom? Many thanks,
Gi pistol belt works great as a waist/utility belt in a pinch for me. Also simply sew a piece of velcro along the top edge of the inside pocket and it will keep your items from falling out.
The 100L and 60L packs have an amazing design, but the price suggests that this is still a one-off small business production that hasn't scaled to market demand. The same price point got alot more pack at mystery ranch until recently when MR decided to outsource production and price gouge consumers. This pack needs pals under the lid or on top of the lid... or just put the lid from their 60L pack on it. At the ~$300 price point (including waist belt) MysteryRanch blows HPG out of the water. People are going to hate me for saying this: HPG has a cult following for a very specific market and needs to incorporate a small number of additions to meet a wider customer base.
Well thought out, cogent review of a quality home made piece of kit...Hill People gear rocks!!!. Thank you...I just subscribed to your channel. Keep up the great work!
Great review. I'm debating between the tara and the umlindi. It would fit my needs for the the extended day hike/overnight. Would this pack be a bit overkill/standout in an urban environment?
Aaron. Three things. 1. Prairie belt is great on the pack or not. 2. Space on the "big sleeve" is for a firearm for short barreled rifles or thin shot guns. 3. Please review the Sandpiper of California Pack Mule Frame System on this pack.
I am happy you are enjoying your belt. I certainly do mine. I use the smaller pack for longer scouting. I use the belt with a shoulder harness all the time everywhere with my kit.
I don't know your thoughts on hiking bags, but if you are interested in some packs, i defiantly recommend the Osprey Stratos 34. Awesome bag for hikes and over nighters. Around the same price point as a lot of these that you review. And one plus it has over these to me is the hip belt with pockets that i see a lot of your bags lack. Just my recommendation though. Great videos, have been a fan for a long time
Great video. I think the hill people gear stuff looks great. Keep meaning to pull the trigger on a kit bag. I think I am going to have to subscribe to your channel mate.
+Mr.Salpling When used with a prairie belt, the pack only touches my back at the lumbar region (where the belt is) and the shoulder straps. There is no contact anywhere else on my back.
I bought a drago tactical assault bagpack, it is really nice, I am very glad with that purchase. If someone are looking for a good bagpack it is a good option. Regards!! from Mty. Mexico. =)
Did you use this as your main carry on , on the plane or was this your personal item in addition to a full size carry on. I am wondering if this will pass as a day pack for flying on top of a carr on?
Thanks for the review... been looking for a semi-tactical, rucksack style pack for bushcraft purposes. Seems like this might just meet my needs... also good idea on replacing the bottom paracord cinch strap with shock cord. (Not quite sure but this might work for keeping my Hultafors Classic Hunting Axe centered and steady, what do you think, strong enough for that with the loop at the top and the shock cord/cinch to keep the handle steady?) As always great video/audio work and comprehensive review... Keep up the good work.
I would not recommend this pack for anything over a 1-2 night summer backpacking trip. If you are looking for a good 5 day medium sized pack I would recommend the Ute pack by HPG. This pack is only a 30 liter pack compared to the Ute with a 60ish leader capacity. Check out their website: hillpeoplegear.com/Products/CategoryID/1
Awesome footage Aaron and great review! I also am long in the torso, so I know the frustration with packs. I have been eyeing this pack on e-bay but it's saying the Dimensional Volume: 2309 cu in which equals out to around 37.8 Litres. I just don't want to order it and have it being the same sizr as my TAD. I have a Triple Aught design Litespeed and was looking for something a little more larger in which to use for 2 day outing's I have a 65 Litre but that's def not just for a couple days out in the woods hahaha ...

you should do a review on the HPG Connor pack.

+shrubjr893 Thanks!
@@gideonstactical will the umlindi fit under airplane seat
Great pack and great footage of Alaska. That is one place on my bucket list.
around 8:30 when that dog took a leap across the river... lol

Aaron I really enjoyed how you filmed and edited the video. Good stuff.
Really appreciate that my friend. It means a lot to hear a fellow TH-camr say that.

How about 6 years later? Do you feel that HPG has made the changes you wish to see?
Nice pack great visuals!
Thanks!
Please consider reviewing hiking/camping footwear.
Please do a follow up review 🤞

+Steven Parsons Prairie belt on the Umlindi is amazing! It feels weightless with the belt, so i generally always use it.
I am happy you are enjoying your belt. I certainly do mine. I use the smaller pack for longer scouting. I use the belt with a shoulder harness all the time everywhere with my kit.
very nice! Great job on your channel!

Thanks so much, I have a osprey 24L we are testing right now and a Gregory 30L. Both great packs. Thanks for the recommendation.

I dont know if i would pay 220$ for not having a back cooling system :/ the rest of the pack looks quite nice! Thanks for the review
My crew and I were talking about that, those systems, which I have many, do not offer noticeable difference.
+Mr.Salpling When used with a prairie belt, the pack only touches my back at the lumbar region (where the belt is) and the shoulder straps. There is no contact anywhere else on my back.
+Mr.Salpling Direct Action Dragon Egg. 25L under one fifety. With killer vented back pannel. Same material. Best 25 liter pack out there.
***** I am familiar with direct action.i am thinking about buying a direct action ghost :)
Is this a v1 or v2?
I bought a drago tactical assault bagpack, it is really nice, I am very glad with that purchase. If someone are looking for a good bagpack it is a good option.

HPG stated its a 2000ci / 30L pack. Is that with expandable accessories?
Now that you've had it for over a year, do you feel the same way about the Umlindi?
looks comfortable to wear
It is very comfy
The website says this is a 30 liter? Not 22 liter
This is an old video they may have enlarged it or I am human many have miss spoke. 🤔
Does this pack have waist straps? I've always found waist straps help for a long hike in my opinion.
Veritas Chevalier Nevermind I seen where you described the belt, just rough having to pay an extra 100 buck for a belt for an already 220 dollar pack.
The Last Huntsmen the belt is also a standalone belt, able to be used on its own. It offers some storage on the belt as well.

Randy Micallef I think it would work well for that. No problem my friend.
Sweet pack.
Nice review! As usual! How would you compare this to a medium U.S. Alice, for a lot less money??????
With a tent on the bottom and a sleeping bag on the top... would this be reasonable for a 5 day backpacking trip? (adding the waist strap too)
I would not recommend this pack for anything over a 1-2 night summer backpacking trip. If you are looking for a good 5 day medium sized pack I would recommend the Ute pack by HPG. Your trip looked great, but the pack is to rich for my blood but it looks like a great pack!!
Totally understand
Xxwhat kind of gloves are those

@gideontactical, What colour is that bag??
foliage green :D
Umlindi or Scree 32 ?
danpass12 I have the same dilemma!
I really like the look of this pack but there are too many other affordable options for me to drop that much on it. It looks larger than 22L.
It is sweet!
its 30L
It's a frame sheet dude
Lucky
You're in a damn park in Alaska. 🤪
I love your reviews.... though you are making want to go broke ha!
