I use the tarapocket with a pocket harness. Same kit, but without the water bottle pockets, compression straps, and back padding. I added the framesheet for stiffness and I carry this bag almost every day, in the woods and out. A great piece of kit. It's amazing what you can fit in what seems a small space.
Brandl Stephenson I agree, great piece of kit! I have both the Tarahumara and the Connor packs and they routinely swap duties as a get home bag and daypack. Good idea about adding framesheet on the Tarahumara.
really nice set up and kit list. I'd throw a few MRE style energy bars in there. yes you dont NEED to eat, but if you have to overnight, a snack would be nice just to get something in your stomach and ward off the hunger shakes. at least i know me and i'd love a little snack just to hold me over.
You will not be disappointed. I just had the Ute and tarahumara shipped up here to Canada. Cost me a small fortune with the exchange rate and duty. I had some buyers remorse after I ordered (lot of money in this economy). However it wasn’t out of the box for 5 seconds and I felt perfectly fine with the purchase. Amazing quality, great folks that own the company and amazing warranty. Worth every penny.
I agree with you about REI, I try to avoid companies that support a political agenda! They should be more concerned with providing the customers a value minded quality product instead of politics. Alot companies lose customers by getting involved in a political agenda or movement!

Also the owners of Hill people Gear make it easy to support such a great company, I love their philosophy on nature and the outdoors in general. I also agree with how you think about a get home bag, great video. Dizzy. MAC I don't have the deep woods ruck, I have the 2018 day ruck. Had it for about a year to the day. I'm currently using it as my range bag, good pack. Hidden Woodsmen makes good stuff, I'm sure the deep woods ruck won't disappoint if you decide to pick one up.
I know this is an old video but...I'm trying to decide if this bag fits my 5'6" with a 17" torso. Curious: how tall are you? I'd be using it for short hikes but worry it's too long and that the back panel isn't supportive enough. Do you find it comfortable? Thank you for your wisdom, if you're still out there.
I'm 5'10". The pack doesn't have any support, or frame sheet. There is a slot that you could put one. I believe it was designed to carry a pretty light load. The shoulder harness design makes it very comfortable, at least for me. Hope that helps.

Question: Are you able to tie anything to the top . . . . poncho, rain jacket, etc? Comment: I understand your conclusion about food but I don't agree with it. You're 20 miles from home and you can make it in two days . . . assuming everything goes according to plan and you don't get hurt. But if you're forced to only do 3-5 miles a day like with a broken ankle or leg . . . if you have to detour and you're now four days from home . . . or let's say going home simply becomes impossible . . . . then food would become essential. You need to assume the Worst Case, not Best Case and plan your contingencies. There are simple solutions. A one pound plastic container of JIF crunchy peanut butter contains 2500 calories. So a couple of those wrapped up in your wool blanket, for example, would help. The wool blanket roll, as I'm sure you know, has been used by many armies throughout history. I think that's an essential thing to remember if you want to add more carrying capacity with the Tarahumara. You can even cut the blanket down to say, 5' x 5' and reduce its weight, thus allowing you to carry more stuff rolled up. HPG sells a stuff sack for around $20 which doubles the volume of this pack. However, you can also use the MOLLE SUSTAINMENT BAGS that go on the side of the large MOLLE ruck and hang them from the Tara's compression straps. Other bags work too like the Czech and Polish bread bags or the MOLLE First Aid bags. Even a mesh bag works. Like for example, you carry an emergency blanket and rain jacket on the front. Shove this into a mesh bag with a few other items for easy access. I noticed, for example, that you carry little items inside small bags. Shove all those small bags into a stuff sack or mesh bag and free up space inside. Final comment . . . . when you wear the Tarahumara bag, your waist is free. You can always wear a pistol belt or leather belt with pouches. For example, the MOLLE Waist Pouch is 400 cu in or over 6 L. MOLLE First Aid pouches and canteen pouches are terrific. So what I like about your video is that you used the Tara as a platform to hang stuff on. People should adopt your mentality and even add to it with some of the ideas above. It will help you carry a lot of stuff that's well-distributed around your body so you will be able to move fast and step lightly. I agree with you 100% . . . . many folks have unrealistic expectations about their own fitness and ability to carry large bags. In fact, scavenging food and gear off preppers passed out along the road might just be a great survival strategy :-) Cheers, brother. Great video!

I'm sure you could rig a way to do it, but I would rather fasten a jacket or poncho under the adjustable compression straps. This also works well with HPGs Connor Pack, which replaces the Tarahumara as my vehicle emergency bag from time to time.
@@zulu5oscar765 I'll be hiking Gettysburg with one in a couple of weeks and I plan to attach a USGI poncho to the carry strap then droop each end over the side of the bag and cinch it down with the straps. HPG tells me to be careful not to attach heavy stuff to the outside of the Tara. In their add, they suggest that the 717 Pouch only carry "light stuff." So I will be carrying the 717 Pouch at the bottom of the Tara, the poncho on top and try to keep the outside open. We'll see . . . . .It's such a versatile platform that if one thing doesn't feel right there are 2-3 immediate alternatives!
Nice video. Your pack wouldn't work for me because, like you mentioned, everyone's situation is different in the world of get home bags. It's a topic near and dear to my heart. I have my own TH-cam channel under a different handle and all of my videos so far (All 5 of them!) are about GHBs.

I still carry 6 beef jerky sticks and 8 peanut butter packets you can eat that while your moving great source of fat and protein
that hardly takes up any space, why not!
That's one of the best loadouts for that bag that I've seen in some time. Including my own! The Tarahumara is a fantastic pack. Thanks for posting.

This is more of a survival kit BOB IMHO. My GHB is food, water kit, rain jacket, extra cash, headlamp,FAK and protection.
everyones got a slightly different variation to suit them. im just glad you both have something to be prepared!

I wanted a green tarp, not a neon/fluorescent green style tarp. In my area, the eastern woodlands, it will blend.
