Yaa.....I agree with you and I'm sure that's why they cast him the way they did. You know Wayne admired him and wanted him in on the "B ad Guy Brigade".
One of my favorite things in “Big Jake” is Dog. Just name alone was Classic but the fact that the McCandle’s Dog was Fierce, Vicious & Unwaveringly Loyal.
You can talk to him that way but there is a price that you're gonna pay for it. If he hadn't already decided that the kidnappers were going to die for what they'd done to his family, friends & his ranch, this scene left no doubt what was going to happen to them.
Trouble with this scene is how could any person that considers themself a man stand face to face with a real man and threaten to kill a young boy if he doesn't get what he wants? Seems a bit cowardly to me...
Richard Boone - one of the few who could actually stand toe to toe with the Duke.
It was fun to see them go against each other again in The Shootist in 1976. Boone played tall intimidating villains well.

Richard Boone was a natural crusty bad guy.

Wayne also had a dog that exact same breed in the movie Hondo.
Man! That ice cold look from Mr Wayne
That look on Jacob McCandles face is..."Yeah, I now understand that you ain't just a messenger boy, you're the brains of the outfit...."
❤The One and Only Duke ❤
PALADIN!
Big Jake said never show your fear . And he didn't.
😯 Oooohh!!
You can't talk that way to John Wayne!
