I just think baking overdrives and / or distortions into the full capture is what they are assuming people will do but it’s a fair point and you’re not wrong to be disappointed. To me I’d rather have a compressor and that did disappoint me when I first got it but I also use an external compressor so even then that’s not a deal breaker for me. I have been making captures with overdrives and boosts built in and I can honestly say it’s doing the job for me but as you know it’s always a subjective personal thing so mileage may vary on that approach.
That's so wild I was just watching kindergarten cop with arnold Schwarzenegger and he said that lol.
That was such a great movie
My guess is that they expect the boost to be already included in the capture you load up. So you'd use a boosted 5150 capture versus a capture without it, for instance.
But that's a bit hit-or-miss at best.
Jarrod you are right about about the Nano Cortex not having a OD,i would have also liked if it had a Display Screen even a mini display and it should have come with a included Power Supply!
@@jimsimmons2674 thanks for commenting. The power supply definitely should be included.
It’s really aimed at pedlaboards. I wouldn’t use it. I’m using CIOKS to power the unit.
Hi Jarrod. You are so correct about what you said regarding the overdrive and not to have the overdrive option is actually mind blowing crazy. Also a mini screen to see what pre set you are on would have been a big bonus as well.
I'm really not sure why they were very limiting on what slots they would allow certain things to go into maybe it was running into a DSP concern? Either way this is an extremely valid point to bring up... This should be easily solved with a software solution, the pitch shifter uses a lot more DSP than an overdrive or a fuzz pedal etc. so they should easily be able to be swapped out! Looking at this pedal overall I think it's supposed to be more or less an add-on pedal of some sort and not an all-in-one solution... I have a full quad cortex and I use it with 4 cable method for many of its effects, as well as using a Poweramp to drive a real speaker cabinet etc. I'm glad I have it and I'll stick with that for now.
It would be nice if it could run 2 Neural Capture blocks, but they justify that one is enough because you can generate a single capture of an overdriven amp which is less flexible as well as a capture that includes a mic'd cab
SHARC chips are SOCs (Systems On Chip), meaning that, depending upon the architecture of the chip, it COULD be updated with new firmware that includes new effects. However, certain SHARC architectures do not afford this kind of re-writability depending on the design. So it's really unknown as of now whether or not Neural DSP has planned that far ahead or if they just commissioned a write-once chip from a supplier. Let's hope this toe-dip of a product is configurable.
that intro is probably one of the best things on the internet this week
@@JimboLodisC haha thank you
Easily 🤣
I think the most useful way to use this new Nano is to model your own gear. And not rely on it to be a complete Amp, Cab and FX unit. You can capture your entire setup Amp/Cab/Pedals and Mic. I think that’s the best use for it, which most guitar player won’t find useful. Now if you have access to a badass music store that’ll let you capture all the stuff they have, that’d be sweet.
@@Necca_UK you can do that for a lot less than $550. Don’t need this device at all if that all you’re gonna use it for.
@@Necca_UK are there a lot of capture pairs where one is overdriven and one is not?
You can just capture the pedal in front of the amp 🤷♂️
Then the pedal is stuck to the amp and you can’t change settings. Only one capture block
@@masterskywalker8877 no, then you have another preset with the amp and no pedal
@@dpFOXY and you’ll have to capture every variation of every setting. Otherwise, you’re stuck
@@masterskywalker8877 same thing with an amp. That’s the capture - a snapshot.
@@ukaszpalkowski8552 you can quite literally change pedal and amp settings with ease, in what way are you stuck. If you capture a od pedal with the amp, you can’t change settings or turn it off, yet that is the only way to have od. You can’t even change gain.
Hi, great opinion, I totally agree with you. Neural DSP had the opportunity to break the market with its new product, but it was born very limited and vs Tonex there is a difference of $200; maybe they can improve many things with an update, this will surely be too late (as is usual with them) but for now if I had to choose today, it would be Tonex.
what I think the idea would be that if you do a capture for an overdriven tone, it would be in the capture. butyour point is on POINT 👊
Can’t you just do a patch with OD and a patch without?
100% lol. Or just…use a drive in front of it on your board 🤯 (in fairness I do think they should add a drive block 😂)
Dude, thank you so much for this video. The lack of fx loop and the need to have a separate switcher just to avoid the tap dancing in a live setup makes this a hard sell.
I can't integrate this into my current pedalboard setup because of the lack of a loop.
My pleasure. I just want to give you guys the right information so that you can make the best decision for you. I'm definitely not telling people not to buy this product, I'm just telling them to make an informed decision. I'm glad I helped you do that.
What you are saying is 100% correct. I think the easy work around for NDSP would be to allow for 1 capture and 1 cab with 5 blocks only for gate, pitch, mod, delay and reverb but you could replace either of those with a stock QC overdrive so you still have 5 blocks. I would love to see it be able to run two captures but it is unlikely and with it having the ability to capture which is really a great feature. There might be some limitations. They are trying to bridge the gap in the price range and I think it is great for new users. However QC owners really have no need for this which is also a good thing because if it offered more, than most of the QC owners would have their pitchforks out.
The more units they sell means they grow and update all units accordingly. QC is still king 🤷♂️
I was seriously considering buying it, and glad I did not yet pull the trigger. This has GOT TO BE remedied. What is the FIRST pedal you typically bought? Probably 90+% or more of us it was some sort of overdrive pedal. Often I use tube screamer and / or a Klon style drive to enhance signal chains. They compress and change eq in very nice ways - even on high gain amps. I don't want to have to capture amps I have already captured again with overdrive pedals. I presume I can use my existing captures from my current QC and have acquired in my current library. No OD/distortion option is a deal breaker for me. I have already sold some of my pedals. The appeal of everything or nearly everything in the unit is great - especially in something like that which could possibly go into a gig bag pocket. Part of the savings of buying the original unit was selling some of my amps and pedals to fund it because the overdrives in the quad are fantastic. So if I bought one, I'd need to get the overdrive pedals and need access to the same amps I previously modeled. And yes, I would prefer overdrive more than transpose feature. Thank you for bringing this up. I would have figured it out quickly when I went to use it. They will fix this, I hope they do sooner than later. I don't have all the amps I previously modeled. I'd be SOL. I'd be super disappointed. And I love the QC, and consider myself a big fan. I really want to like the NC. heck, I want one, just find a way to add in the OD/Distortion patches into the unit and do it quickly. If you take a year to add this feature, people will start selling these off as soon as they realize it does not have that capability. Many just won't buy. Even cheap units have that capability. Thanks again for bringing this up.
@@johnthornburg4049 my pleasure. And I totally agree, 90% of us would buy an OD pedal before we bought anything else. I'm talking to them right now and trying to work something out where I can get one of the Nano pedals for myself and see if I can remedy it with doing some boosted captures. Hopefully they will send one to me and I could try to find a workaround for you guys. Also, I offered to help give them some of my critiques to help make the product better. We'll see what happens. I'm waiting to hear back from them.
Great video! So you can capture an amp and an OD pedal separately with the Nano but the device blocks are locked as far as where you can put them pre and post the amp...that is very limiting indeed! If enough complaints roll in I would think they would fix that with a future upgrade.
@@mhoff7722 thanks for commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I really hope they fix this issue because I think there's a lot of great things about this product.
You're totally right about overdrive,...also i think it needs some kind of compressor
I've done captures of my Mesa Triple Rec and Laney AOR 100 with a Dirty tree pedal baked into the signal chain and it has worked out pretty well. Hopefully they do make an update in the future. Maybe it was a CPU processing power issue? I'm not sure.
If your issues persist, Jarrod, on the QC. Reach out to support. I had a hardware issue that Neural remedied very quickly, at not charge to me. They even paid for postage there and back. I have nothing but good things to say about their Tech Support department
No OD? That's one of the dumbest decisions they could have made. I don't think I've ever seen a modern amp sim that doesn't have that option. Mind boggling.
Using an actual overdrive pedal in front of an amp model sounds and feels much more like a real amp. I have done this on almost every modelling and capture device. It is the way.
I’m right there with you. I actually have a question into Neural about why they did this or if there is something I’m overlooking.
I’ve had a QC since they came out and when you think about what it does do you really need something smaller with such limited capability (limited relative to the QC) ? I know it’s cheaper for folks who cannot afford a QC but seriously, who doesn’t have $1700 invested in redundant gear that they never use. So again, I’m all over the QC, especially with the Plugins becoming available. The plugins are stellar and it’s another thing the Nano cannot do.
That was a bad decision on their part.
I was wondering the same thing yesterday but it looks like they skipped it which is simply puzzling because if you decide to use the Transpose feature in the Nano but go into the Nano with an OD pedal, the Transpose will be f-ed up (it behaves better with a clean DI tone not an overdriven tone).
The OD ought to have been included right before their Capture block.
They should give the possibility to switch between another capture slot and Cab. If your cab is baked in the capture the Cab slot is useless. Also they should offer chorus or tremolo.
With that you’re mostly able to do everything.
If you already have a pedal board and power supply, all the drives and fx you like , monitor speakers and a mic this will sound almost as good as the amp you already have
I’ve got one on the way. I get where they are coming from with some of the design decisions but my big frustration is that it appears you can’t toggle the delay or chorus on/off with the second switch and also doesn’t appear to be capable via MIDI either which is staggeringly bad for people who wanted to have a really compact pedalboard rig.
It’s like you would need duplicate patches with those effects enabled and switch back and fourth or just use external pedals.
So I guess I’m going to simply treat the unit as JUST an amp/cab like the Friedman IR-D/X
I'm really hoping that some firmware updates will fix those issues in the near future. We'll see.
@@TONEWARSgearshowGiven their timeline of giving us features we wanted with the QC, we may get those features by next year 😅
Is kinda like the same issue with the TONEX... You don't get separate blocks for amps and drives. Another bummer just like the TONEX is that you can't turn off the IR on one output and leave it on on the other so you can use a power amp and cab monitor yourself on stage while sending the IR signal to the PA... Even chinese Valeton Multifx are able to do that nowadays.
Too many things are missing from this one. It’s best to wait and see if they update it.
I was looking for the OD slot and they say you can capture a drive pedal but no amp? Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll probably wait for your capture on the evh with OD, then I’ll decide if I’m buying.
Also let me move around the slots, if I don’t want delay, let me use that block for something else like an OD, comp or whatever else
It’s really obvious to anyone using captures. Most people find they sound better including the OD or boost in the capture.
Instant sub because of the intro lol
@prsman84 thank you!
I’m guessing there take was use your own OD pedal. Even if they had added an OD 9-1 there would be complaints about it. Every video I see the first thing anyone does on any pedal is the ad their own overdrive although there’s already one built in.
Most times people aren’t happy with what they put in the units. Even though it comes with tons of captures again individuals will always want their own captures cause they’re never satisfied with what they get.
If they sold the units with no captures, people would complain and say why no captures. So they added ton of captures and still nobody will be happy with them. It’s the game.
Cool intro. I would say it's not a deal breaker for me if I was to order one. I like all the features and most guitarist like to use their favorite overdrive pedals or experiment anyway. If you capture it with your amp or use the many captures from the cloud. I don't think a display is necessary if the app offers everything from your phone. I think it offers more than tonex. I guess it all depends on what your needs are. I'm waiting to see what the final price will be here in Canada where everything cost a arm and leg. Make sure you clean up all that shit Jarrod lmao.😂
Exactly... The Overdrive/Distortion Pedal Option is not there! Also what about a compressor for Clean Tones!
Just bought one won’t get it till next week hopefully like you said an update
But I think I’ll be happy no matter if they do or don’t finally I think I’ll be done buying anything else
Maybe a few good effects pedals in the mix yaaaaahoooo the search is over lol
😊
I am a guitar player but now since I am doing youtube videos, I am also playing more bass. I was critiquing the unit the same way about the OD. But what about compression in front of signal for bass? I personally dont need it since I only play at home and have the QC. But yeah the OD would be an issue for me because if you use something like a boogie you need an 808 if you are playing metal.
Yeah dood great points
Just capture your drive pedal along with the amp.
Well, the Transpose offered by NDSP imo is best in class. And, captured or modeled overdrives are never as good as analog. Analog really breathes life into a digital rig. Makes sense tbh.
With only two footswtiches dedicated to switching presets, how would you turn on/off said overdrive? Sure you could set one of the footswitches to be a "stompbox" switch, but then you lose the functionality of having the two preset banks. With the smaller footprint and less footswitches, you have to sacrifice something...I think Neural just made the decision to leave the boost off in favor of having a capture with and without a boost to switch between.
You can easily set up a preset with and without a boost on each switch
@@TONEWARSgearshow how is that different than two different captures...one with a boost and one without?
I don't really see the market for this as there are products in this price range that have a much higher spec. The tag-line for the Nano should have been "Get 5% of the features and functionality of a Quad Cortex for 40% of the price". I'm sure they'd have had a sure-fire winner on their hands if the unit had 4 slots before the amp and four slots after, and then let the marketing people go head-to-head against the Kemper.
A bunch of design choices for this product seem really baffling to me.
Lack of OD being one of them.
If they had tried to release something that was akin to the HX stomp from a feature perspective I would have bought one on the spot.
Hi Jarrod. Does your digital pedal have master volume output level for your presets. I'm only throwing an idea out there since I myself don't know. Cheers.
Yes it does
Not having an OD block is very odd to me. I wonder if they will add it later on??
Good question. I really hope they do add it in an update.
what I wanna know is who approved this product
That was a really good Arnie impersonation 😂
No OD spot?! Then its useless for me. Ill stick to my HX stomp xl
Especially when you consider their plugin suites all come with multiple ODs. Indeed, the OD selection is one of if not the first add in that is shown in suite previews. Seems like it might've been an oversight. If so, it's quite egregious.
Thanks for commenting. I really hope they addressed this very soon. I can't believe no one else has said anything about this. That's really unfortunate
do your quad cortex packs you sell work with the nano?
@@mikec8815 I'm sure they will. I'm not sure if all of the effects would fit in the signal chain but I know the captures should work.
I was so tempted to pull the trigger on this when my buddies told me this morning about it but the last time I acted on impulse was the MT100 (and you know how well that ended up!) and watching this video definitely made me holster my GAS pistol. Thank you for looking out for your fellow gear whores! 😅
Thanks for commenting. That's what I'm all about. Looking out for you guys while giving honest reviews on gear.
There gonna probably make a compatible OD pedal that goes with the nano for extra money!!
Oh they thought about it,,just wait and see
Why isn’t your o/d an always on pedal anyways?
most times the overdrive comes baked into the capture tho
An OD block would have been much more useful than the oddly specific inclusion of a single chorus, reverb or delay algo. Most verb or delay heads are going to BYOB when it comes to those effects anyway, so it’s kind of a waste of space to give one specific type of delay or reverb that a user may or may not like, or may get tired of and supplement anyway. Almost everyone likes some form of boost, OD or dirt pedal. And I’d even go as far as saying a Compressor and OD block would have been more useful than the other effects, so you can at least have the early signal chain before the amp locked down, then supplement your post amp FX with your pedals of choice. Better to lock down one half of the chain then have them both lacking. IMO
Yeah massive deal breaker... Then again I can't see myself going digital unless I lived in a caravan hahaha
Lol..Arnie start made it:)
Turns out the devs who designed this new Nano are a bunch of boost Karens 🤔
😂
Hahahha😂
I wondered the same thing from other reviews I saw..
Having an 808 in there would have been useful.
Finally some Arnold lol
I agree man, what a dumb oversight
Now I want Taco Bell and I don’t even like Taco Bell
Jarrod you make me laugh!!!!
Kemper PLAYER owns this Nano in every way.
Just use captures with overdrive 🤔
Oh crap.....sudden regret for buying without fully waiting to watch all the videos.....sometimes I'm so stupid like that. 😞
Did you already purchase it ?
@@TONEWARSgearshow Unfortunately yes.....coming Saturday. Here's the thing....I don't capture anything. I USE captures. Actually, I wonder how many people actually "Capture" amps vs USING captures......that would be an interesting statistic. I would be plenty happy to NOT have the ability to capture in the small device, and more options for other things......such as overdrive and plug-in compatibility. I might just be sending this back.....but man....that form factor looks really good.
@@TheChicagoTodd I agree, the form factor is near perfect. And I am with you, I just wanted don't use it to do their own captures. They most likely buy them and would rather have more features and effects.
You said in your last video it would work for you 🤨
Yes, after I got a chance to do boosted captures with it and experience them for myself, I discovered that it does work for me. I never say whether or not something's going to work for me until I actually test it myself
Best intro,lmfao
I think the Nano QC is a glorified POD GO…fixed signal path,4 FX…not having an option for an OD pedal was a pretty glaring omission…yeah, you could put a real OD/boost in front, but the whole thing just seems like a compromise to me…I would buy a Tonex before this,if capturing amps was a feature I wanted..
Get to the chopper!
You put the overdrive before the amp that you are capturing then do another capture without it. Problem solved.
@@derekellerbe4251 yes that is true. I 100% know this. I want to compare a boosted capture to a regular capture with a boost pedal in front of it and see if there's a difference
Given the functionality you get at this price point an OD pedal is a strange hill to die on. Go buy a quad if it’s that important.
There’s no fx loop. So you can’t put things where you want if you still want to use a few real pedals.
Yeah I don't get the hype. Not for me. Maybe if it had an fx loop.
@@MarcxSerrano it desperately needs and effects Loop and the ability to move your effects pedals around the way you like them. Hopefully they can fix the moving around the pedals thing in an update.
It’s useless without a drive block or second capture block.
Lol jarrod haha
They did this so when they add a drive block all the stupid TH-camrs can rave about what a revolutionary update this is for NanoCortex and how every needs to grab one.
Haha we'll see....
😂
LOL
I don’t really understand the use case for this
Yep, this is a big fail
Keep the comedy coming man, its some funny sh*t haha!
What a let down.. makes no sense goin back to tap dancing
