Everyone knows that drugs are bad, but none can say that he doesnt make good music and writes good lyrics. He's definitly talented and he has definitly a big problem. Everyone knows. But hes a very charismatic man so why don't like him and his work?
Breck Road Lover is a great tune and, as I am from Liverpool, it resonates with me even more. I don't think anyone could argue that Heroin is a good thing to be on but I certainly don't think it has been a negative influence on his creativity - the 2nd Libertines album was heavily influenced by drugs as was both Babyshambles albums - which doesn't really square with the "drugs cancel out all creativity" argument.
p.s. agree completely with your assessment of him being the best artist around in the UK - absolute genius and on another plain compared to almost everything else out there at the moment.

its sad that every video that is accociated with pete doherty is littered with people arguing about the drugs in his life. the beatles, curt cobain, jimmy hendrix, sex pistols all did drugs. the only diffrence is they didnt have the likes of The Sun, Daily sport and all that tabloid shit following there every move and mistake.
