Always a huge pleasure to see how Pete manages to fight against his old demons and becomes every day a better version of himself ❤ Very beautiful song too
So many beautiful and evocative lines in this song. The song that's just on the edge of falling apart, the dog-chewed tourniquet, gunk as a verb... absolutely brilliant!
One of the best songwriters of our time - pain, emotion, poetry... the rough diamond always shows new facets and shines without losing its roughness. I love that.
I dredged the mouth of the Humber, felt better alive. A really good verse. Anyone who knows the struggle to unearth clarity/meaning amidst the murky, chaotic aspects of this life can relate to it. It really feels better alive. Thanks again, Peter. Your poetry heals me. ❤
I gave my nights up for old songs, sound better alive, I gave my life over to old songs, sound better alive, I dredged the mouth of the Humber, felt better alive, Slipped unnoticed across your border, felt better alive… The song it skips and bumps along, Seems to fall apart, then all I want as it comes together, sing the melody… I tip-toed around gravestones digging up old songs, felt better oh my, I tip-toed around gravestones digging up old songs, was a hell of a night... The song it skips and bumps along, Seemed to fall apart, then all at once it came together in sacred melody… And I’d always planned, To sing in a sweet and soulful way as only cowboys can, But my saddle strap snapped like a dog-chewed tourniquet, And the sky fell low over north London, And it hangs low until this day. I dreamt of gunfights in Toledo, when I opened my eyes, I was in the layby north of Telford, an A-road layby, And as the tour had gunked and jumped along, seemed to fall apart, Then all at once ran true as a ley line under sacred Albion. And I had always planned, To sing in a sweet and soulful way as only a cowboy can, But my saddle strap snapped like a dog-chewed tourniquet, And the sky hangs low over Margate sands, And it hangs low yet…
When you have a busy day but your mind is stuck with: which tour date can I travel to and which bundle shall I order. Thank you Peter for bringing this kind of joy into our lives 🤗
Food for thought, love the lyrics on this “I dreamt of gunfights in Toledo…I was in a lay-by north of Telford….a ley line under sacred Albion”. The dog chewed tourniquet line is also very clever like there’s a strap which ties two different worlds together one of dreams and romance and one of banality but it’s grown old and we is starting to fall apart. Great imagery. The dog an image of family life and old age? The torniquet a reference to...?
More of Pete Doherty please, as yet still undiscovered by the masses in my humble opinion, heard him say recently he hoped Noel Gallagher would appreciate his work, aim higher than that Pete, you are worth more ! Keep doing what you do my friend and God bless you ❤
