    This is great. I love that the 14yr old cousin tells them how lucky they are to have a father teaching them to be great people NOT a great wife. I realize that they live in a different culture but I think this is a wonderful heart warming story that could be inspiring to all children that have a dream but are told they can’t do it for whatever reason. It’s also great for any parent showing to be supportive, encouraging, and loving no matter what

      I thought the movie was really good and agree that the father didn't want them to have to get married .He might have not lived out his dreams but he gave his daughter's other opportunities that normally they would not have. He was a pioneer of sorts and forged a new way.

      I would disagree, while it’s good that he didn’t force them to get married he did force his dreams and wishes onto them, something that a lot of Asian kids face.

      Yeah, I get what you saying. But the girls grew into women that actually like it. SOMETIMES you gotta kinda force your kid in a direction. Had they continued to hate it after cousin married then they would’ve kept fckng off and losing matches intentionally.
      As a kid that had no passion for anything, I was always aloud to quit everything I tried. That not good for me at all. I think there needs to be a medium encourage but don’t force it and make it so (in their sitch) it’s sport or marriage.

    As a matter of fact the coach (who is shown as a negative character) never actually felt jealous or had a problem with Mahavir, in fact they knew each other from a long time and had a lot of respect for each other. The ending, where it is dramatically shown that Geeta doesn't win until the last round, is fiction and in reality she won the game in just 2 rounds. And of course Mahavir wasn't locked up in real life and had seen his daughter win.

    You got to love the father when the daughter comes home and now thinks she better than him due to her so-called training, but the father does not assert his dominance, nor does he engage her by telling her that his training is better he just listens.
    When she was trained by her father she won every match, when she was trained by this new coach she lost every time. It does not take a genius to see which training is better and she only beat her father because he was old but his training still stands. Her new training allows her to eat fried food, drink, etc and she wonders why she losing all the time.

    This was a great recap! Now, this comment is going to be too long so brace yourself before clicking "read more". Many people criticised this movie for glorifying the act of parents forcing their dreams on their children. Yes, if we look at this story from our privileged perspective, what the father did seems toxic. I agree that irrespective of one's privilege, forcing their dreams on someone is toxic. But if we look at the story from the angle of the thousands of Indian women who are instead forced to marry and take care of their in-laws', we can say that the father was just giving their children another option in a way that he knew. The way that he knew was only wrestling. If you look back, even our own parents gave us options in the ways they knew - the difference being they had more options for us and we were able to try many paths and choose the right one. That wasn't the case with these girls. Also, the father clearly stated that he was just trying for a year. Had the girls not shown any interest or got motivated enough by the end of that year, he definitely would have stopped and let them be.
    Edit: as someone rightfully stated in the replies, the father decided to train them only after seeing the girls defend and beat up their bullies, thus realising their potential in the sport. I doubt whether the father would have even bothered to know whether they could be wrestlers had that incident not taken place. There are many interviews of the real sisters portrayed in this movie, confirming almost everything shown in the movie to be trus, except the obviously fictional climax. The only thing that they didn't agree with, in the movie, is that initially they did more tricks than what is shown in the movie to stop their father from training them 😂.

    • @A-myth
      @A-myth 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say his father only trained them when he found the potential in them.
      The talent was there and its the parents responsibility to push their child for greatness. Parents have experience and they know the good and the bad..
      He trained them,made them physically fit and gave a mission. But it was the daughter's choice to follow it once they became adults.

    An amazing story and recapped really nicely. I have to ask (of anyone who has seen this film): is this considered a “Bollywood” movie? Like where they break out in song and dance numbers every so often?
    I’d hope not since it looks like it’d be a disservice to this story, but I’m curious because I hate musicals and don’t know enough about Bollywood to discern if ALL movies have songs and dance numbers or if regular stories do exist without them.

      Oh, there is music and maybe one dance.
      But it isn't an quintessential Bollywood romantic flick for it to feature Spontaneous Music and dance, music and song here is used as device to further the plot, example an exercise montage has a song describing "how the dads method is harmful for the girls"

    • @winsomeyou1837
      @winsomeyou1837 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      not all the bollywood movies have songs where they randomly start dancing, they're just infamously known for that. This doesn't have any though. These days they just use it as a background song, alongside the story progressing.

      Indian movies have a lot of lyrical music in it, but that doesn't mean that they are like musicals. Most of the good quality movie which are not just a 'fun formula films', use music establish the emotional connection needed for the narration and they are usually used during series of scenes in quick progression of time where it's hard to convey the emotion with appropriate music, similarly in flashback scenes and such.

And the whole family was into it too, not just one parent. But the premise of going 'against the grain or norm', is pretty much the same. But the movie I'm mentioning is a comedy, where as this is more inspiring and 'drama' if that, for the struggle part and overcoming something.
