To Filipinos/Asians who are complaining about this movie: not every movie made about Filipinos or Asians in America has to be a masterpiece. I think this is a decent movie, and by supporting it and artists who are doing their best to represent us, we can show Hollywood that there is a viable market for movies about Filipino-Americans and Asian-Americans. Then they will want to make more and even better films than this. If you have to wait for that masterpiece before you decide to support Filipino/Asian artists, you may never get to see one, because your negative attitude will have already defeated their efforts.

I agree about the support. This movie wasn’t decent though. The writing and plot were TERRIBLE. That’s my big beef with that, not even getting into all the aspects of Filipino American experience I felt were missing. If you take it at a purely cinematic experience, it wasn’t good. The relationship between family members would have been more than enough to make a story interesting! Why did they go all over the place? I love the cast, and didn’t have a problem with the acting. They mentioned that it took 6 months from idea to movie and that it usually takes longer. Maybe there is a reason for that. And to do it for the first main stream Filipino American movie? Big disappointment. Hope they make another one with Filipino writers and directors. Seemed like a money grab to capitalize on Filipino Americans and Jo Koy’s popularity. I sincerely wish them luck because a movie that really focuses on a Filipino American family would be a great movie. It’s not the movie we were given.

Whatever🥰😍😘 I still want to see it.This is just an experimental movie. I don't consider it a make or break movie of Jokoy coz he's already made. If it flops then we are going to wait for the right material for Jokoy. Filipinos are known for supporting anything that have Filipino people in it. We are just proud when somebody from the Philippines is making a positive noise in the entertainment industry.

@@ecmirand21 there was a Fil-Am movie released in the year 2000 called The Debut which starred Dante Basco (the lost boy, Rufio from Robin Williams' movie Hook). But it was indie and it was mostly, drama. So only select audiences saw it. But I think that film was more representative of the identity crisis experienced by Filipino Americans born in America and raised by immigrant parents. Only clips are available in TH-cam.

When I first saw Lou Diamond in La Bamba, I thought to myself, 'he's part-Filipino'. And Jo Koy is right. There was no Google at that time, you had to read magazines to find out about them. But he's always been upfront about his Filipino lineage. And how can I forget Angel in Stand and Deliver. He's such a wonderful actor. And he was funny in The Big Hit.
I saw Tia Carrere in True Lies. Of course, she was cast as the Asian bombshell. But that face and complexion, so Filipina.
I'm definitely going to watch this!

ie. a fil-am that was born and raised in US coming back to PH, meeting other relatives, the struggles, the culture shock, learning local ways, eating local delicacies, having a hard time adjusting and then eventually learning to appreciate and love his roots.
maybe something like that or totally different.

I been here a long time and what I see is a general racism against Asians where non-Asians, not just whites, mainly Americans, lump Pinoys in as a generalized Asian. I fucking hate that, not just for Pinoys specifically but the fact that because we are all from that part of the world, we're all Asians. Japanese are not Koreans who are not Chinese, who are not mga Pilipinos and not South Asians. Fuck that. You need to alter your view of the racism and don't make a big deal about Filipinos on this, tae.

I saw the movie before reading the critics (rotten tomatoes and imdb) . And I must say I was elated to see all FilAms actor in the silver screen. Story was imbued primarily by stereotypical Filipino and FilAms traditions. There are very few scenes that were funny like the church and garage with lou.

When I watched the movie, I was a bit uncomfortable cause I was not enjoying it then I started to like it when Jo Koy started talking in the church. Then I realized this is a movie and he is not doing a stand up comedy show and he is now an actor in the movie. That means there’s some serious part and funny part. As a Filipino, I can relate to some part. Just making a Filipino inspired movie is already an accomplishment. I’m so happy for Jo Koy to start the legacy. Congratulations to him and all the cast!

Agree with what Tia said. Filipinos are everywhere in America yet only a small percentage is represented in American tv and movies. When I visited SF, most of the people I saw aside from my relatives were Pinoys. At the airport, in the mall, in the restaurants, at my nephew's school, teachers, students, the principal, all Pinoys. I don't even recall seeing white people. Of course, that's SF and Daly City.

I went to watch the movie and I really enjoyed it. It is too short though. I like the scenes with Tiffany, and Jimmy Yang, and the good/bad cousin:) Jo Koy did okey in his first time acting job. I was laughing at the theater. There was a scene with Jo Koy and his mom that was really touching, i was starting to tear up, but then it switched to the karaoke. They could have sang and danced more. I was wanting Joseph Jr to be in the scene as the son:) Maybe next movie? or if there is a sitcom that will follow this movie? But next time, I suggest a Filipino script writer and Director if we want to showcase Filipino culture which is really hard because the Philippines has so many facets in our culture depending where people are living.

I’m just glad we have a platform for once. Beggars can’t be choosers, y’all. If we want to break into the mainstream without suffering setbacks (looking at Constance Wu after Crazy Rich Asians), we gotta take what we can get. Blaxploitation persisted for decades before AfAm actors got more nuanced development and mainstream attention. Our battle’s just starting.
I, for one, am going to venture out into indie short films to produce, write and direct on my own - maybe with a single cameraman, but that’ll be a minute before I see that dream realized.

I would love a part 2 filmed in the Philippines. Where jokoy’s family will take a vacation in Manila or any part in the Philippines. As a balikbayan a lot of pasalubong, a lot a lot of extended family comes to see a relative that hasn’t been seen for a long time. The whole family will go anywhere sky is the limit. And those purses and shoes you brought to wear will be left behind. lol looks like fun.
