From Season 3, Episode 7: "One Minute"
Breaking Bad follows protagonist Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a chemistry teacher who lives in New Mexico with his wife (Anna Gunn) and teenage son (RJ Mitte) who has cerebral palsy. White is diagnosed with Stage III cancer and given a prognosis of two years left to live. With a new sense of fearlessness based on his medical prognosis, and a desire to secure his family's financial security, White chooses to enter a dangerous world of drugs and crime and ascends to power in the world. The series explores how a fatal diagnosis such as White's releases a typical man from the daily concerns and constraints of normal society and follows his transformation from mild family man to a kingpin of the drug trade.

Marie doesn't realize just how right and wrong she is at the exact same time.
That's one thing about this show that never fails to hit hard. Marie honestly ended up being one of my favorite characters. Sure, she was basically the definition of annoying younger sister and its obvious she was always jealous of Skylar because despite having problems with money, she was able to have a family. It never says anything about it in the show, but I think it's very strongly implied that Marie for whatever reason wasn't able to have children. That's why she comes off as a kleptomaniac, which I don't think she really is. She steals stuff because subconsciously she's jealous of the attention that Skylar gets because she's having a baby with a man 10 years her senior and with the cancer diagnosis, it's almost guaranteed he'll never live long enough to be there for the long term. That's also why when Hank is taking his anger and frustration out on her while he's bed-ridden she starts going to all those open houses and coming up with all those different lies to anyone who would listen. Poor thing just wanted to be out of the house and pretend that she had an amazing life, even if it was only for a couple hours. Seeing her break down the way she did at the police station was heartbreaking(although admittedly pretty hilarious because of how her face looked, that shit was pure gold). And of course that's why she tried to take the baby from Skylar. Aside from concern for her well-being. That's the one thing she did throughout the entire show that I absolutely did not like. But IMO she was one of the most real and believable characters in the entire show, and I really hated how it ended for her. It really didn't end well for anybody obviously but I think in terms of suffering, she got it pretty bad. I think Skylar and Jesse were just about tied for first on that one though.
@@zanebaker3394 No she was still annoying I’m sorry and she acted like a Karen most of the time and was emotionally unstable.
Right about what exactly? Walter is no more at fault than any other random person breathing in the world. Hank is a DEA agent and he goes after the most dangerous cartels willingly. Yeah, either get a new skill or deal with it. This was always bound to happen.
@thecurious926 She's right that Walt's the overall reason this happened. Yes, every character has their own agency, and not everything is directly Walt's fault, but the overarching reason of why the characters react the way they do and take certain courses of action is generally because of Walt's own actions.

It was entirely walts fault lol. He screwed over Tuco. He was in the twins crosshair and hes the reason Gus sends them after Hank. Hank is lucky he survived because the one twin wanted to Axe him a question instead of just finishing him off@epicfan1598
The lack of a gun was pretty irelevant in the fight because he acquires the first cousins gun right away. The cousins expected him to have a gun that's why they got the vests. They didn't expect him to use the car.
That's a good point
not really, if Hank had a gun he would have theoretically had a higher chance of surviving
The most relevant thing here was the warning call from Fring. If Hank hadn't been given a heads up they'd have made short work of him and been on their merry way. Probably making something blow up on the way out to cover the whole thing up like with the truck full of illegals

The irony of the situation being that she casts the entirety of the blame on the DEA when they couldn't have done anything to prevent it aside from jeopardizing their jobs but it's not until she goes after Walt that Skyler makes her stop and realize that she's just hurt and angry and there's no reason to blame Walt, although she's clever enough to know that Walt had something to do with it. When as usual, he's the guiltiest person in the room. It's true that he had no idea about the cartel coming to kill him, but still.
I'm going to play devils advocate and say that this wasn't Walter's fault. Tracing back, the reason the Twins came to New Mexico was because of Tuco's death and when Walter/Jesse injured him, the Twins took this as a sign for revenge. But outside of dealing with Tuco, everything was completely out of their control. Tuco was the one who kidnapped Jesse/Walter, the pair had NOTHING to do with that. Even if they didn't choose to poison him, it was clear as day that if Tuco brought back Walter to Mexico, he was going to kill off Jesse because he was useless. Everything Jesse/Walter did up to this point was to survive. Tuco was the one who underestimated the two and got himself killed and the Twins were too blinded by revenge to care.
@@kaz7690 I'm going to use a legal term here. But for the actions of Walter, Hank wouldn't have been attacked. Walt might not be totally guilty, but his involvement with Tuco is what caused it all.
@@kaz7690 Walt had nothing to do with this attack itself thats true. And can't really blame him for the salamanca twins attacking him in the parking lot. However it is a consequence of Walt getting involved in the meth buisness and getting involved with the salamancas. If he never got involved with tuco this wouldn't have happened.
@@epicfan1598 There is no way that Walt, whilst being completely anonymous in that bussiness (at the point in the show), should've anticipated revenge from some distant cousins of Tuco, especially since him and Jesse really did not intially expect Tuco to be that big of a nutso who kiddnaps them and shit.
@@kaz7690Plus, Hank was investigating dangerous cartel members. Something like this is kind of a risk you have to accept
To be fair Hank literally signed up for situations like this by becoming a DEA agent.
Pretty sure most DEA agents don't sign up to have a brother in law run a meth empire and then be targeted by cartel hitmen
I mean yes but I do wonder how many times he'd been in these near death situations before walt went in to the buisness. Besides I feel like most of the time he'd have back up when going after these guys like the drug bust operation in the first episode or even the one where walt jesse and saul kind of create a fake heisenberg with that dude who gets jailed a lot. There were multiple Dea agents on that case as well
Generally the situations you "sign up for" going into that industry, all mostly involve being armed.
The point being?
Except police officers or agents of some sort are never the targets of organised crime because the latter is well aware of the consequences of taking on the government directly.
You don’t understand, my husband needs the right to break the law in order to enforce the law and protect the law. Great logic, love!
People in real life are even more emotional and have less logic
You have a very valid point, but Marie is clearly emotionally distraught over her husband being nearly killed and also looking for someone to toss all of that excess anger at. She doesn't care if the logic for her anger is built on shoe string connections and double standards, someone needs to feel her pain over what happened to her husband.
@marduk6836 It usually depends on the person and personality there
Yeah every charachter in media should make all the correct decisions and be logic and facts all the time. Cinemasins level analysis

While Marie is talking about Hank, the last person she mentioned was Jesse, so it almost sounds like she's berating him for what he's put Jesse through. Might be a stretch but I think it's an interesting choice of words
Marie doesn't give a shit about Jesse.
Nah, Hank told Marie he felt guilty about what he did to Jesse and she told him not to because Jesse deserved it iirc.
she called jesse a "degenerate" earlier in this scene and she was trying to come up with excuses for why hank nearly pummeled jesse in to oblivion only for Hank to tell her that he screwed up on that. She doesn't care about him
People replying to you that don’t understand clever writing using double meanings
The zoom and the words “do you ever think about what you put him through”. The writers definitely left that open for interpretation and you can literally put any male character that Walter has interacted with significantly, and thus harmed their lives. I absolutely love her line, her expression. It doesn’t even matter if Marie doesn’t know what she’s talking about. In my opinion it’s better that way as the audience have the liberty to make sense of her line through switching and putting in multiple characters like Jesse, Walter Jr, etc.
"I can't lose Hank! He's my rock..."

I wish they gave a little bit of a backstory about how hank and Marie left. I think that wouldve been a good transition to how Skylar and Walt met right before Skylar broke down with the cancer news.
0:26 So does no-one else realise this is General Shepherd?
Who's that
Hank should have his own personal guns...?
He very well might have.
But he's already looking at assault and under investigation. It isn't a good look if he's seen handling a gun still, and Hank didn't really have a reason to suspect he'd be just openly attacked. He didn't even believe the call at first, expecting it to be a prank from his partner. Hank at this point didn't know just how far he'd dug in, and if it was later seasons after he found out about Walt, he absolutely probably would've been sneaking a gun.
Even if he did, they'd still be registered firearms and he'd have had to turn those in, too. The main issue was that you're not supposed to have guns when you're a felon, and Hank committed felony assault
@@zanebaker3394not convicted yet. There is and was no firearm registry in New Mexico, and there was no “red flag” law in New Mexico at the time. He would have been within his right to carry his own personal firearm until such time as he was convicted.
Didnt they just took his gun when the attack happened. He was used to having a gun as an agent so he didn't see the need for putting an extra gun in his car.

Marie: And it's not just her. It's Hank's grandma. If she didn't have her. We wouldn't have him. And he wouldn't be attacked. It's her fault!
You know, Hank should receive more credit for this. I mean, the guy killed two Salamancas (Tuco and Marco) and left the other one in critical condition (Leonel).
He did more damage to the Salamancas than any other character in this universe. Gus, Mike, Jesse killed only one (Lalo, Leonel and Joaquin respectively). Meanwhile, Walter did more damage indirectly, he is responsable for the death of four Salamancas, yet only one was killed personally (Hector with the bomb) while the others were more by accident
Technically Gus did the most damage both directly and indirectly. And his indirectness was more intentional then Walt's. As for direct damage yeah hank did the most.
