- Let's round up last year with my 2022 Kpop Trend Report and trend predictions for 2023. Y2K had Kpop in a chokehold last year and we saw a lot of trends ranging from fluffy hats to low rise jeans. Fashion trends come and go but I feel like we're just getting started with Y2k.

I'm waiting for real commitment. I'm waiting for an artist or group to really commit to the Y2K aesthetic, and show up to a red carpet dressed like how Ashley Tisdale used to show up to red carpets. 🤣 I will not consider it true dedication until at least one person does it with Y2K-era panache.
I mean we saw a dress over bootcut pants on Yuqi at the SMA 23 and I was horrified hahaha. I really hope we don't see that come back 😭😂

I personally think New Jeans and NCT are really good example of Y2K group, it’s just my opinion.
When you mentioned the trend of suspender belt pieces I immediately thought of this look Monsta X's Kihyun wore last year, that's completely engraved in my mind. He wore this cropped shirt with long suspender belt pieces, and with cut-outs on the sides, for their performance of "Love" on Music Bank. That look was so good!! Super interesting to see on a male idol!! Like you, I'm super curious to see where the Y2K trend is heading next! And I loved the grunge Super Board looks as well!!✨✨✨
Ahh yes Kihyun my beloved 😭 Honestly, Monsta X have one of the best stylist teams by their side in all of kpop in my opinion. Almost all their stage/MV/red carpet outfits are handmade or tailored so that each one looks different but always fitting to the member wearing it which I really love. I certainly prefer that over just putting male idols in plain outfits head-to-toe by high fashion brands

For Yuna’s look, I do want to mention that her look was pretty much lifted right from how Lee Hyori (the original singer) dressed during her live stages, so she was just being accurate to the source material! Minus a tan maybe lol ✨ ✨ ✨
You know, if it’s something you would like to do, if could actually be interesting to see you react to older K-Pop videos because there were definitely some local-specific trends. For example, the ski-wear/goggles trend you pointed out is actually an example of Korean Y2K! Ski-wear was a huge trend in the late 90s made popular by groups such as H.O.T. and Turbo.
Other examples of Korean Y2K you might have missed is the “antenna hair” look where narrow strands of hair are gelled to frame the face (made iconic by S.E.S.), the leg warmers trend (this one actually started in Japan, but caught on in Korea bc of Fin.K.L), and the baker boy cap (worn by Kwon Sang-woo in Sad Love Story).
Anyway my prediction for 2023 is frosted tips (unfortunately).

Yeah that's a good point about Yuna! Yeah I defo need to look back into older Kpop MVs as I've not really done that yet. HAHA frosted tips I mean I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as the patchy bleached hair we've been seeing on male idols. Like patchy on purpose whaaaat
i feel like last year was a great year for fashion in kpop, definitely got a lot of inspo for my personal style from it! for this year i hope to see groups lean more into this cybercore-ish concept aespa has style wise and to see more y2k variations, more grunge but also a more muted palette kinda like that grey set of outfits itzy wore in cheshire (they kinda remind me of the acubi trend and I'd love it see more of that in kpop as well). another thing I think would be interesting to see more of is the ballerina type of style jennie has been using for her solo stages on tour
The fluffy hat trend was started by G-Dragon back in 2009 (if I'm not mistaken). All of his fluffy hats deserve a separate video.

In K-Pop specifically, the first instance of the fluffy hat styling would actually be H.O.T. - ‘Candy’ waaay back in 1996. But G-dragon did briefly repopularize the trend later.
@@astrogranoff yes, I remember. BIGBANG even did a cover of Candy in the similar outfits. But GD made it really a fashion trend.
I think NCT 127 has been on this trend for the longest time since their first debut “Limitless rough version”

Hi George! Thank you for such a useful video. I own a vintage clothing and goods business so I have to stay on top of trends and you literally hit the nail on the head. Agree with almost everything you said/pointed out. Glad you mentioned the resurgence of Diesel, fascinating to see it make such a big comback, that was the shiz back in the early/mid 2000s. Im having a flashback to the shoes they put out that were insanely popular. Anyway, yup, sadly, I don't think the y2k trend is going anywhere. Gen Z and younger are all about it. As a millennial that lived through it, i can do without, but im going to see if I have any of my old clothes from this period so I can sell it. haha! Btw, i love the cycling shorts, that's an early 90's trend more than y2k though. I wasn't into emo, but I do hope the grungey y2k is more prominent this year. Thanks again for such a thorough vid.

Loved it! I just discovered kpop as a whole beginning of the summer and really started to look at fashion trends in the fall, so I'm not that deep into every group yet.
However, I love the inspiration I'm getting for clothing pieces from all the fashion I'm seeing and I secretly loving the Y2K trends, because they picked the most interesting trends from that time and they're also improving the trends, haha. So yeah, really curious how boygroups will go with the Y2K trend (and YAS on the grunge one, I love the styling of Superboard).
Something that can disappear in my opinion; I don't know if it's recent or not, but the thing/trend with the sweater half on/half off: it's a no from me.

I'm really loving the Y2K trends, last year K-pop fashion has fantastic moments I think this year will be great as well. And same, I just hope long cycling shorts don't become a trend, although I understand they work for idols as security shorts, specifically for young female idols.

You should check out WOODZ. His last album is essentially a rock album with a pop-punk title song so naturally his style and look was pretty deep in grungy/emo look. I personally LOVE his highlighted hair during the promotion cycle.
Thank you for mentioning the cycling shorts! I've never liked them as part of an outfit except for when you're wearing it like Diana did in the 90s but also not as fashion-item but sports wear and ever since I've been introduced to kpop, I cannot unsee them being "safety shorts". They will just never look cool to me

I'm so amused that Y2K is back again, but it wasn't that good the first time, so I don't know why stylists are bringing back the PTSD of that hot mess decade, lmao why is this happening?? 😅 I watched my older cousins + their friends go through it, and if the trend continues, then these are the horrors I'm afraid of: Ed Hardy prints (on everything), 😳 Von Dutch trucker hats, Juicy Couture velour sweatsuits, really really chalky and frosted eyeshadow, chunky strap one-shoulder tops and dresses, braided belts with beads, those boots Mariah Carey wore everywhere with a matching low-rise mini skirt, handkerchief tube tops, Revlon sugar sugar lip topping, skirts over pants, and the 'queen' of them all... *everything Ashley Tisdale wore on the red carpet* (look it up if anyone is too young to understand). 😵 I'd love to see talented and creative stylists make better interpretations of it, but I don't think we need 2000s cosplay. Nayeon is one pair of below-the-knee black boots away from a 2002 Resident Evil poster.

Not at all! A brand name doesn't mean a person has style or is fashionable. I think most of the time the custom outfits are better as they have been more thought out

I love you George, thanks for doing this video it's perfect! --- my opinion of the biker shorts is too tied with being a woman and wanting to wear skirts but you don't want your legs to be revealed if it makes sense to the length of the skirt. So you would use a short and it's a secret. Now to see it be a trend, meant to be seen, it ties to "relief" for me. It's a satisfying trend to see for me, and I'd rather have it be obvious than when you try to also hide that short then you also see it- So my fave was in Wendy's picture. I turned 20 in 2000 - lol, going to go past my parents house and try and find some old wide cut jeans 👖. I had different coloured Lanyards to hang off one pocket to match my baseball hat for the day😅

HAHAHA! Sounds like we're gonna be turning 29 around the same time. Aquarian?! I remember working in AllSaints when I was a teen and they would assign uniform. This poor girl got given a floral printed tunic with the matching knee length leggings. Every time I think about it, I still howl with laughter 😂

Imo Kpop fashion has gone downhill in the past couple of years. If you check MAMA or Melon Awards (for instance) from 3-4 years ago or even older than that, again, impo..those were the days. And even in music videos, fashion was much much better.

Sometimes Korean netizens are weird. If the idol is wearing a revealing outfit (like literally a bralette, or more revealing like bra top that supposed to be under the shirt and cannot be seen) it's okay _e.g. Yujin of le sserafim wearing a black bandeau bra layered with triangle denim bra top_ but when TWICE wear a decent minidress and suspender belts as an accesories. They called it revealing, daring, seductive, sexy so and so. *Like wtf it doesn't show skin that much they just add a suspender belt and that's what they call sexually abusive outfits.*
Yeah I saw a video the other day about Yunjin in that Prada top saying she was about to pop out of it like ... erm that's why she had the bandeau underneath haha. Omg haha how is a suspender belt sexually abusive? 😂 it's been an element of women's lingerie for centuries. I just googled it and apparently the suspender belt was invented in 1880
